Paint.NET is free image and photo editing software for computers that run Windows. It features an intuitive and innovative user interface with support for layers, unlimited undo, special effects, and a wide variety of useful and powerful tools. It started development as an undergraduate college senior design project mentored by Microsoft, and is currently being maintained by some of the alumni that originally worked on it. Originally intended as a free replacement for the Microsoft Paint software that comes with Windows, it has grown into a powerful yet simple image and photo editor tool. It has been compared to other digital photo editing software packages such as Adobe® Photoshop®, Corel® Paint Shop Pro®, Microsoft Photo Editor, and The GIMP.

Note: Paint.NET requires Microsoft .NET Framework v2.0.

I love Paint.NET but it seems like every time I open it, it is asking to download and install a new version. I wish there was a way to turn that off so that I could download the new versions at my own leisure.

Still, awesome application. Not sure I could use my computer without it now a days.

Use the "Custom" installation option instead of "Standard." There's a point at which you can choose whether or not to be alerted about new versions.

I must say, I'm disappointed that PDN doesn't have a preferences pane of any sort--you can only set this option at install time.

Umm, yes you can set this option after install.

Help -> Check for Updates, then click the Options button.

This is one of the all time greatest apps. I'm always amazed at the tiny 1.5mb size. It has an awesome mb to feature ratio..is that even a thing?

When you consider that it requires the 50-100MB .NET framework for its functionality, the small size isn't that impressive. Still a great program, though.

D'oh! That would explain the .net part of its name..Im a little thick sometimes.

Actually .NET 2.0 is only about 20 MB. (Paint.NET does not [yet] require .NET 3.

My favorite picture editor on Windows by far. I wish there was something as good on OS X that was free.

I wonder what it would actually look like if it was using .NET 3.0

Exactly the same.

It's funny, the company I work for spend $1000's of dollars on the Adobe Master Collection for us, and I still end up using Paint.net to do alot of things.
