I have been using Picture Viewer Pro as a direct replacement for a certain long-in-the-tooth image viewer on the PC for some time now...

Updates have been thin on the ground. 15 months to be exact... then bang! Out come two within 24 hours!

Picture Viewer Pro was built for a purpose to do a specific job and to do it well..
It is fast, small, light on resources and has no bloatware features in it, unlike some of its competitors products!
It's basically an image viewer with some interesting info bars - showing EXIF info etc. Very handy for photographers.
I like it most however, as you can use your mouse wheel to quickly run though loads of JPG's!!

If you want to know what Picture Viewer Pro can do for you, then please take a look at their website...
The free trial verison, which is slightly crippled is below.. but I noticed they are still offering a lifetime license at the special price of just £7.50 at the moment!

Well, fortunately there are different color schemes so it doesn't have to be bright orange. Could you have picked a worse color to use in the screenshot? Unfortunately that's about the only improvement I could make to it. First of all, it changed all of my image associations without asking. It makes me really angry when programs do that, how about asking permission before you go changing my system settings? Fortunately it did change them back when I uninstalled it. Next up, every time I opened a picture my firewall caught it trying to access the internet. I don't know whether it's checking for updates or what but I couldn't find a setting to turn this off so that's another strike against it.

Now, if being really ugly and rude wasn't bad enough it seems to be terribly unstable and crashed several times. I'm sorry but this program is a garbage and even if it were free I wouldn't use it again. You may call the Windows picture viewer old but it's infinitely better than this. If you need more features than it offers I have to agree with ThaCrip and recommend IrfanView.

It does take associations as thats its point - its a full screen picture viewer - small and fast. Good news is if you don't like it and uninstall it - it puts all your associations back as they were - no damage done..

It doesn't access the internet at all - unless you use the manual option to check for updates yourself.. Crashes? It needs .Net Framework 2.0 - could be that no? No crashes here! I admit the UI can be a bit loud with the color schemes but as I said - I use it in fullscreen mode - double clicking on my jpg from windows explorer to start it up - its quick and fast! Just my 2p worth... Presssing full stop key cycles the color schemes by the way ;-)

I looked at the firewall log and it turns out it's trying to connect to my own computer (127.0.0.1) on port 2184. I have no idea but denying it was causing the crash apparently. It should still ask before taking associations, and I still think it's really ugly.

I'll stick with the Windows Picture Viewer; it's small and fast too and is of course free.

Good news - according to the developer (b)log I subscibe to - there will be a new version later today - that totally removes that start up NAG screen for people trying this out... Got to be good news! ;-)

Ps. I use the grey scheme- that default one is way too loud - pass the shades please ;-)
