Ubuntu is a community developed, linux-based operating system that is perfect for laptops, desktops and servers. It contains all the applications you need - a web browser, presentation, document and spreadsheet software, instant messaging and much more. Ubuntu is free software. With Ubuntu Desktop Edition you can surf the web, read email, create documents and spreadsheets, edit images and much more. Ubuntu has a fast and easy graphical installer right on the Desktop CD. On a typical computer the installation should take you less than 25 minutes.

The Ubuntu Promise
  • Ubuntu will always be free of charge, including enterprise releases and security updates.
  • Ubuntu comes with full commercial support from Canonical and hundreds of companies around the world.
  • Ubuntu includes the very best translations and accessibility infrastructure that the free software community has to offer.
  • Ubuntu CDs contain only free software applications; we encourage you to use free and open source software, improve it and pass it on.

Traditionally, how stable are the Alphas?
#2.1 routakiila on 11 Jan 2008 - 16:12
"Pre-releases of Hardy are *not* encouraged for anyone needing a stable
system or anyone who is not comfortable running into occasional, even
frequent breakage. They are, however, recommended for Ubuntu developers
and those who want to help in testing, reporting, and fixing bugs.

Alpha 3 is the third in a series of milestone CD images that will be
released throughout the Hardy development cycle. The Alpha images are known
to be reasonably free of showstopper CD build or installer bugs, while
representing a very recent snapshot of Hardy."

Wow... Ubuntu comes in almost as many flavors as the V-word. Looks nice, though...

But the differences are that the *buntu include functionally different Window Managers, and users can freely install all of the features of the other sets. Vista's differences are for market targetting at different price points to make a profit, and features are stripped out (and forbidden) from the lower-end products.

So, yeah, if you count the numbers, they are a lot alike. But if you look any deeper, you see the differences.

like the person that posted #2.1 said, I think I'll wait until the 8.04 betas start rolling out.

To many 'buntu's for me!!

Learned most of what little I know of Linux on U/Kubuntu. Got tired of the "fanboyism" from it.

Went to Mandriva, then a few other experiments in Linux, then Zenwalk 4.0. Now use either Zenwalk 4.8 or Blag70000 on all 7 machines. Believe I prefer Blag over all of them.
