- On XP I find the .net framework a pain to install
Why is there so many versions of it? Then after you install them there's security updates for them.

- The installation takes about an 1+1/2 hour (90 mins)! (And that's on a C2D E6750 with a raptor and 2Gigs ddr2-800mhz) so it is SLOW

- I don't know it took so long on your machine... it took about 5 minutes to install on my old computer (Sempron 2600+, 1GB DDR-400, 7200RPM PATA).

- If I install 3.0/3.5 .net, do I need .net 1.1 or .net 2.0? Is it backwards compatible for runing v1 and v2 apps?

- 3.0 is just 2.0 with some more crap tacked on. I liked how when they released 3.0 you had to go to WU and download patches for 2.0 because MS was too lazy to integrate them. The install takes forever on XP and installing patches for .NET take forever as well. Why is there a 3.0 a 3.5 and a service pack for both? Shouldn't 3.0 upgrade to 3.5 and then there just be a service pack for just 3.5? I can't stand how MS set this up.....

Have you actaully tried to install 3.5 on its own? you do NOT need to install anything before it... if you install 3.5 it will install anything it needs on its own... you do not have to patch anything or install service packs for anything... 3.5 will automatically update v2 to sp1, install 3.0 sp1 and install 3.5... no work on your part at all besides running the 3.5 installer...
as for why there is a 2.0, 3.0 and 3.5 thats because they are not different versions but add on features
2.0 - is the core base .NET functionality
3.0 - is Vista based functionality (WCF, WPF, etc...)
3.5 - Is extended core functionality and new compilers to add on LINQ and a large host of other new features...
its actually a good system...
