Every time you use your computer, even when it's brand new, the files on your PC or laptop will continuously become fragmented. This means that these files are split into millions of pieces, and this occurs even more so when you go to add, modify and delete them. So when you go to access a file - even just to read it - it will take much longer than necessary because Windows has to first find each piece of the file before you can even see it. This makes using your computer, and doing everything you want, much slower than it should be. Fragmentation also leads to much slower boot times and will make applications run slow or even potentially cause them to "lock-up" or freeze.

Defragging your computer puts the pieces of your files back together into a single piece - the way they should be. A defragmented computer will boot quicker, files will be accessed faster, and your applications will not hang. A good disk defragger will not only defragment, but will also consolidate the free space on your drives into one large piece so when you create a new file, there will be enough free space to save that file in a single piece, rather than fragmenting right away. I have serious doubts as to whether this provides any major benefits over freely available defraggers. Personally I use JKDefrag and sometimes Defraggler.

Actually I use it and would recommend it.
Using Visual Studio for a couple of hours just rips the disk drive up... using Perfect disk I haven't had VS crash like it used too with Diskeeper... nough said.

What's the difference between PerfectDisk 8, and PerfectDisk 2008.... aside from more support and a new GUI?

Sorlag, it is better than some free ones. For example, it is better than AusLogics Disk Defrag because AusLogics is no different than using Windows Defragmenter. Neither of which provide file placement which is the second half of the disk optimization task.

Faisal Islam, see my reply to Sorlag. PD blows AusLogics out of the water hands-down no-contest.

xMorpheousx416, why don't you install VirtualBox or VMware Server and install trial versions of the two, make snapshots and/or run them side-by-side and compare the differences?

Posting that an app is "better" or you "should try it in a VIRTUAL environment" helps no one. Where do you get your suggestions?..... nm, don't care to know really.


I was talking in terms of any newly refined algorithms from one app to the next. I'm not into the fancy dress up people put over the top of their applications and call it a "fresh new GUI". So.... to put it in your terms:

"Nice candy apple red paint job, beautiful rims... but what's under the hood?"

Funny..... you hear most of everyone stand up and go "yeah, the app does this and this and this, and oh yeah that too!" and call it BETTER than another. Then you ask those same 14 year olds, "and exactly HOW does it do that"...

all you get is..... "uh, uh, uh, uh"

I was your faithful follower for many years. But then I met JkDefrag and I couldn't resist dumping you for it. Now my hard drives are happier and my wallet healthier. I'm sorry things didn't work out for us.

How about using Diskeeper? You can by the Pro version for the same price as this one... plus you have no fragmentation with it running!

Ok, PerfectDisk is actually the best defragmenter in the world. check out THIS website to compare with DiskKeeper2008 Pro. And you can take a note of the features and compare them with the free defrag programs. Since I have been using PerfectDisk for 6 years now, I now only pay $19.99 to upgrade (and I don't have to install previous version to do the upgrades)

Er..that's the Raxco website..lol obviously it's going to paint everything in PD's favor. For eg: See that comparison about PD having 'I/O throttling' while Diskeeper doesn't. I've used both, and I can firmly attest that Diskeeper's Invisitasking tech (basically intelligent I/O sensing and tasking) is FAR, far superior to that of any of the other defraggers. PD8 in fact can be quite a resource hog at times, and rather unstable in the screensaver defrag mode. I haven't tried out the latest PD yet, but I intend to, soon just out of curiosity. However, I don't see myself moving away from Diskeeper for the time being since Diskeeper serves my needs very well while being extremely thrifty in resource usage.

I've used "PerfectDisk 8" for a long time, and it is easy to use, and very fast. I tried Diskeeper in the past, and did not like it. I prefer running a manual weekly defrag to having a defragger running constantly. Tried JK Defrag as well, but didn't like that either, due to the annoying GUI it had, and it seemed a tad slower.

All in all I'd say a defragmenter is a personal choice, as the performance increase compared to using what comes with Windows XP/Vista is in most cases very little.

I absolutely love this new version. Well worth the upgrade. Anyone who thinks free alternatives are as good or better than PerfectDisk is naive or has very low standards.

Yep, PD 2008 is top notch. I've tried numerous defraggers and this program is priceless. The responsiveness of my machine after a run through is fantastic. Beats anything else out there.
