Adobe Acrobat Reader is free software that lets you view and print Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF) files.

Adobe PDF is the open standard for worldwide electronic document distribution. Documents converted into PDF format preserve all the formatting, colours and graphics of the original document, regardless of the application or platform used to create it.

The PDF format is the workflow standard for the publishing industry, and is increasingly being used in financial services, regulated industries and governments. With Adobe Acrobat Reader you can also complete and submit PDF forms online, a handy tool as more and more companies begin to embrace the technology.

The latest Adobe Reader 8 ships with a brand new interface, new tools, and more options for basic PDF viewing and comment-making.

Note: the download here is for Windows XP and Windows Vista users only.

Can we possibly go more than a few months without a new version... Good Lord...

Well, you don't HAVE to upgrade... Plus, most all software vendors update their software, just a fact of life...

That's like saying:
"Microsoft, can you not release any security updates for 2 or 3 months please... Good Lord..."

Do you have any idea how stupid that sounds? Adobe aren't releasing an update for the fun of it.

IMO the only real alternative to Adobe's Reader:

Pretty unprofessional site. They type in ALL CAPS and explain how their product is a "free" alternative to the already free Adobe Reader.

I'm sticking with Foxit.

Adobe Reader is HUGE, bloated, slow, pops up annoying "Please Update" messages all the time (unless you take the time to disable that), ties itself into the OS forcing a reboot if you try to uninstall it, and by default renders fonts unreadable on 256 color systems.

Seriously, how many people run their monitors at 256 colors these days? That's hardly a large group of people to worry about is it.

Use Foxit Reader. Its a million times faster.
#5.1 Magallanes on 06 Feb 2008 - 17:13
But a bit incompatible, also downgrade the quality of the pictures (specially on those pdf magazines).

I couldn't notice that so far... for my uses, Foxit Reader is the best.

"Adobe PDF is the open standard"

Open standard my ass.
PDF couldn't be more closed of a standard.

I installed this and my whole system became unusable. Checked the task manager and adobeupdater.exe was eating up 99% of my CPU and it wouldn't let me kill the task. Had to reboot and uninstall. Google search reveals this is a bad bug and has been around since 8.1 I believe, so I recommend avoiding this junk.

Shame too, they finally wised up and came out with a nice clean interface, but the program is still ridiculously large and the automatic update stuff is horrible.

AdobeUpdater.exe can go into a loop like that if it has trouble contacting the adobe update site, we have the issue at my place of work where the updater cannot connect to the internet due to our proxy configuration.

My advice is to just delete the AdobeUpdater.exe application from c:\program files\common files\adobe\Updater5
