How do these companies make money from creating a program that just does what freeware equivalents do just as well and often better?!

That, and crazy/mis-leading claims.

A lot of people don't know how to use their computer. Maybe they see an ad for this and think that if they pay a small fee, they can make their computer "clean and more stable" - without having to know what they are doing!

That's essentially what it boils down to.
I support club management software at work and we get several calls a week from users who have new Vista PCs that come bundled with crap including Norton AV/IS and want our software installed.
I usually remove the Norton crap and they never know otherwise.
I'm such a nice guy.
