The speed in this version has also been improved. Some users are reporting that this version is lighter than NOD32.

Seeing as you have no idea what you're talking about I suggest everyone ignore that.

Oh yeah, it's junk...

That's why they've sold and continue to sell millions of copies over the years.

Not saying it's the BEST by any means, but calling it junk is hyperbole at best.
#4.1 chrislewis85 on 04 Mar 2008 - 20:05
They sell millions of copies because of their marketing strategy - it is preloaded on almost every branded system sold throughout the world, and they push major retailers (such as PC world in the UK) to advertise their products. Non-power users will generally buy what they know already or are told to - which is why in the PC retailer I am Technical Manager for, Kaspersky Internet Security outsells every other AV product by 8 to 1. We recommend it over Norton, because it is trash software with the best marketing support in the industry.

Thats because people don't any other antivirus exists. To the normal joe there is only 2 you can buy. Mcafee and Norton, they know of no other. Thats why Norton is dominating the market. What +chrislewise85 said is true, its preloaded on every machine, it sickens me because its only a trial and it pukes after 60 days.

Really? my old (custom) PC and even my mum's Compaq came with Norton and it was a full 12 month subscription. My new machine came with a 3 year subscription to McAfee I dunno, maybe they do it differently in different countries?

both mcafee and norton are still junk, when an av gets preloaded on a new system you should have a choice but you dont,if it werent for norton being preloaded then norton would die fast.if symantec changed the way there apps are and would be easy to remove and reduce the ram sucking then maybe they might stand a chance.

sorry, ill pass but i will continue to use trend.

NOD32 only has an install folder of 24.3 MB and runs extremely light. Doesn't have that dumb Live Update thing either. I bet you still cant remove Norton without that removal tool. Norton may have come along way but it has permanently left a bad taste in my mouth.

Symantec PAYS PC makers (such as Dell) to have their craps loaded onto their PCs. If one idiot out of 100 Dell PC buyers register these craps, Symantec probably make some money in return.

If not, Symantec probably hike the price of their crap, and hope stupider idiots catches their bait, and so on ...

The circle of Life, from Symantec's view ...

Love the ignorant statements from those who haven't used a Symantec product in years (if ever).

"Look how leet I am! Norton is teh suxors!!!11"

Fact is, it's a very good, polished product.

NIS 2008 on my system is gobbling a whole 12MB of RAM. CPU is not even 1%.

Install folder is 53MB. Unless you're trying to install it on a floppy drive THIS IS NOT AN ISSUE.

While it IS true that studies show that some other anti-virus programs do tend to catch more bugs than Norton, even "junk" like Norton still pull out numbers like 96%, hardly terrible.

Even the best ones don't grab 100% anyway.

True it can be somewhat of a resource hog, but CPU's are ridiculously fast as it is, RAM is cheap, so the effects on the AVERAGE user (which applies to pretty much none of us here) would be pretty negligable, especially considering all the different functions a package like 360 provides.

So while it surely may not be the best out there, it's a pretty decent product. Calling it crap or junk is simply hyperbole.

I know people who've kept using Norton over the years and I've seen their setups, The newest versions are way faster than they used to be, even on the same aging hardware.

In my own experience with playing around with it versus others I've found it's easier to configure and in some ways more configurable period than some others out there like NOD32. And for the average user, that's not a small issue.

maybe it is now, but back in the 2004 - 2006 versions every release was slower than the last

And? We're talking about Norton 360 in 2008

That's like saying all Apples are terrible computers since the Apple III was lacklustre. Let's stay focused on the NOW people.

I dunno about Norton 360, but Norton Anti virus 2008 kicks NOD32's ass. I know many people would say otherwise, and I have done my research:

- Norton only uses 13MB of memory when idle as compared to NOD32's 28MB
- Norton scans faster than NOD32
- Norton uses lesser resources while scanning
- Norton also has a better detection rate than NOD32 [AV Comparatives]
- Norton has a better anti spyware [NOD32's one is terrible]
- Norton's interface is much simpler

NOD32 has a better proactive defense and that is the only thing I can vouch for.

Can we get a link for the AV comparatives. I'd be interested in seeing the numbers.
