This is all well and good but how about a free version for the newer 8.0?

Going by their comparison chart you'll probably get 8.0 when 8.5 comes out. They advertise "new version 8.0" as a feature?

cause i was considering looking into free solutions.... is this similar level of protection as say NOD32 etc?

I'd personally go with AVAST. But I think AVG is good all the same.
