the "program" is free, but do the themes still cost money? looks to me like they give you a rather ugly one for free and will be charging for the good ones. so what's really free about this?

I'm sure people will be making themes for free just like windowblinds.

how is this different from windowblinds?

Unlike Windows Blinds where you pay for the program, anyone can make themes / use themes.

MyColors is the theme software is free but you are paying for each theme.
This free giveaway does give you one theme but you will have to buy the others.

This is different from Windowblinds because it is not only a theme but its the software to run it all in one. Its also more than a WB theme in the package, it has an Icon package, wallpaper and often desktop gadgets as well.
This program is intended mostly for those new to skinning who don't want to mess with different software or finding the right software or then in turn having to find themes.
With My Colors you simply pay for the theme and get the software for free. If you bother to check out the mycolors website you'd see plenty of terrific themed skins available with many more being created all the time. Actually from what I hear many OEM's are looking towards adding My Colors to their systems to bring customizable desktops to the masses simply.

I do not work for Stardock but use their products regularly. This is a terrific program to bring skinning to those who may have never considered it before.

if i get an app for free i expect the same for what it does, charging for one and not the other is stupid and should get the developers either shot or fired,if both got charged then thats better but hey cmon themes need to be free,if not the software needs to either be destroyed or a lawsuit should be issued and sue for millions then the company would think twice about there decisions.

I too, have my opinions on what I believe "should" be free.. someone made comments in another thread that Stardock charges for all it's products, which they do not. And, I have voiced my opinion that 'tweaking' software might as well be free since you can find what you need for free all over the net.

But... in this case, it's two different issues.

Stardock has decided to allow the theming application to be free.. that's their call. However, the theme developers (aka artists).. do not have to put in their time, all the time, to create the work for free. There are free themes, and there are paid themes. End of story. If you like the artist's work, then pay them for the time. That same $5 you spent chowin' down a fat greasy cheeseburger.. you could have a sports theme that will last for a long time to come.

Now.. if you ask me, I am not quite hip on having two theme applications.. as it would seem to me that WindowBlinds should be adequate enough to apply the sports themes for MyColors. Hence.. you already paid for what you're using now.. and the support for the themes goes to the authors..etc. The same went for the WoW theme our son uses, which requires Theme Manager to be installed as it does not apply directly with just WindowBlinds. If he were to want a sports theme, we'd have three theming applications going.. WindowBlinds, MyColors.. and Theme Manager. A bit redundant.

Ok your friggen highness. they should be shot or fired? They should be sued for millions? What the hell is wrong with you? What a motherf'n idiotic reaction to this story. What is up with you stardock haters? I dont get these reactions at all. Wheres that damn flip off smiley?

Hmm oddly the above link doesn't work but go here and click on the Get My Colors in the middle of the screen to try it out.

Btw in regards to what Morpheus said I agree that there is some redundancy that should be correctly. You shouldn't need WB and Theme Manager and then have to use My Colors for them. At the very least the Theme Manager though be incorporated somehow into the other two.

solardog:your post was so damn funny, anyway stardock should have both free or both pay only not offer 1 free the other pay,if you ask me it should be free themes and a cheaper theme app,who wants to pay more than once for something?if i pay something i want the extras for very little cost or maybe free, they charge too much, maybe 5 bucks for a theme or maybe 1 dollar,if they charged like 20 bucks for a theme they need to be shot or fired and told to lower ur price as no1 will pay that much as it aint worth it.
