Stardock has released MyColors to the general public. MyColors is a program that reverses the traditional way users change their desktop.

Rather than users going out and finding/buying various programs to change some aspect of Windows, MyColors includes everything needed to completely change the desktop experience for free and instead allows users to purchase professionally designed premium themes.

The public launch of MyColors includes Aero Diamond. For users of Windows XP, Diamond can transform the OS to look virtually identical to Vista. For Windows Vista users, Aero Diamond offers a glimpse at a concept Microsoft considered prior to going with Aero Glass (Aero Diamond has been much discussed, requested in the Neowin customization forums).

so the application is free but you pay for the themes? am I getting this right?

The Diamond theme is included free, and there are and will be other free themes available. However, there are many premium themes.

In windows XP :

The transparency does not show....
Can not choose to apply or not icons....

As always with Stardock, free things dont let you have full features !

So the program not having features you've imagined it should have means it has limitations? Is there some "Registered" version of MyColors we should be aware of?

I've never imagined it to have any features. I haven't looked at it before, but thought I would try it.

In the screenshot above it says "XP with aero diamond" and shows window transparency. Yet in the version I and apparently buzz99 downloaded, there is no transparency. Therefore I and buzz99 assume that it is a feature limited version. If it isn't feature limited, then please explain to us how we can get the transparency like in the screenshot.

IMHO it's already a trimed down version of window blinds...

I paid for WindowsBlinds 5 and 6.

I have the "real" Diamond skin. It has its glass/transparency effects and other stuff that are NOT available in the "free" MyColors version.

Then again, the included Diamond skin may support transparency, its just the stripped down WindowBlinds included (wbload.exe) has those features disabled / removed.

The features are there, its just MyColors has them gimped.

I'm having problems downloading from download.com. Is there an alternative link?
#4.1 buzz99 on 22 Apr 2008 - 20:06
There is an alternate download link when you click on "problems downloading", but it as slow as original link.

Thanks. I'll try it if this one times out again. You'd think Cnet would have decent servers.
#5.1 Island Dog on 22 Apr 2008 - 20:44
Servers are a bit slow, but it's downloading ok for me.

Theme looks like garbage. Why have extra processes running on your computer? Just patch your uxtheme and there are hundreds if not thousands of free themes for XP.

What do you think is doing the skinning in the "stock" version of XP? It's a variant of Windowblinds that Stardock and Microsoft worked together to create. If you disable the themes service and run Windowblinds, you are running the same processes, plus you get themes with much more features, and you don't have to hack system files to do it.

The new Windowblinds has almost no footprint on Vista..the resource/process thing is not an argument against it anymore.

Want style or a theme? Decorate your computer room or office. Put a poster up.
I prefer the classic Windows 2000 theme. Looks "professional".

Does applying Aero Diamond as a theme change the Windows start button for the Stardock one displayed in the picture? If so, no thanks!
#9.1 metallithrax on 23 Apr 2008 - 07:38
Yes, it does

Is it possible to apply the Aero look only to my windows (browser windows and the like)?
#10.1 Island Dog on 23 Apr 2008 - 11:40
Not with MyColors, try WindowBlinds.

I still dont understand the purpose of this program... what kind of gap it fills within Stardocks offering? isn't all that achieved better with windowsblinds?
#11.1 buzz99 on 23 Apr 2008 - 11:26
They prob. want ppl to buy the real window blinds. Kind of a teaser to see what's you're missing with "My Colors".
#11.2 Island Dog on 23 Apr 2008 - 11:39
MyColors is more of an "all-in-one" solution, which is good for people who don't want to buy or use several skinning applications to achieve a specific look.

It's not designed to replace WindowBlinds, just a great way to distribute specialized themes.
#12 Frogboy on 23 Apr 2008 - 20:07
The idea behind MyColors is for people who aren't interested in buying WindowBlinds + IconPackager + DesktopX + whatever and then having to go out and hunt for skins and themes.

Instead, the user finds a theme they want and just buys that and doesn't have to worry about how gets applied.

Hated it... This app f*cked up my icons... Now I can't recover it...

I love how if something negative is said about any stardock app, then Frogboy comes to the rescue.
#14.1 solardog on 25 Apr 2008 - 16:54
Get over it.
#14.2 metallithrax on 25 Apr 2008 - 20:21
With it being his company, he should do that. You wouldn't expect him to come on here being negative about one of their products now would you?
#15 DJ Specs on 25 Apr 2008 - 23:18
Why pay for this kind of junk? The simple free themes are good enough.
#16 VRam on 27 Apr 2008 - 13:30
Looks interesting but not even being considered. Still waiting on that update for WindowsFX that never came......
