DeskScapes 2.0 has been released by Stardock. No longer will animated wallpapers be only for people who invest in Windows Vista Ultimate. With DeskScapes 2.0, all users of Windows Vista can run animated wallpapers.
There are currently over 600 .dreams (animated wallpaper) available at the WinCustomize gallery, and more are added almost daily. There are a wide range of .dreams available such as subtle nature wallpapers, all the way to dramatic 3D rendered creations.
There is a free preview of DeskScapes available, and is available as part of the Object Desktop suite, or the stand-alone enhanced version for $19.95.

Oh I see, it's come out of 'beta'
Now I can PAY for animated wallpaper!
Now I can PAY for animated wallpaper!
Another crippled, useless application by stardock. Why don't they just make something usefull like Virtual Desktop's.
Either way, this fails. *Money stays in wallet*
Why would anyone want to pay for their desktop background to move. If you are prepared to waste money on such a useless application then thats your loss.
You can sit and watch your 'cool' background move all day, good luck.
It's really irrelevant if *you* think it's useless, that doesn't change the fact that people want this type of application, and the demand for it has been clear especially in the last few months.

What demand? Where?
Not to defend stardock, but remember that this feature is in Vista Ultimate, it's not something stardock came up with. They are just making an alternative version. I'm sure there's enough demand for it that Microsoft abandon things like WinFS so that it is in Vista Ultimate.
But yeah, +1 for another useless app from Stardock.

The MoveOn.org founders became rich by selling screensavers which show toasters moving across the screen. There will always be people who simply like to decorate their system and buy this stuff. This doesn't make this software genre newsworthy though. I realize the Stardock owner is part of the neowin staff and surely pays to keep this site alive but lately the Stardock "news" are coming a bit too frequent for my taste.
Sure the animated wallpaper isn't necessary for everyone, but its pretty nice to use to give you something more than static backgrounds.
somehow I got this in the wrong reply section, sorry

You mean like Stardock Virtual Desktops? Part Of Object Desktop
All aboard the failboat.
Just support Andreas's efforts. At least DesktopFX has a working SDK.
This isn't going to entice me to change.

Some of their games are quite good.
Indeed, choosing a pretty desktop environment over a functional one tells me all I need to know about one's personality.

Back on topic; more than any other reason, it's the conduct of this site, and the behavior of Frogboy in relation to Stardock postings, and his general attitude, that has poisoned my opinion of that company. But, I'll probably get warned for saying this, or a 3-day temp ban, my comment might vanish or be edited, and there will be a slew of paid forum posters all over this thread in minutes.
Can't wait. Always fun to watch.

If I see someone who isn't a Neowin mod/paid poster defend this then I'll be surprised. If I see 5 such people defend it I'll probably kill myself.
This is just more stardock bloatware trash.

Yet I use Stardock's products (including DeskScapes). I'm not a mod (or even a paying Neowin subscriber).
For a similar example outside of Windows, take a good look at SmithMicro (formerly Unsanity) and their various haxies for MacOS (both Tiger and Leopard). Fancy desktops (regardless of what OS you run) are like fancy clothes: not everybody's cup of coffee or tea.
One down, and four to go....

To each their own I guess. I've got the space on my HD so I'm not too concerned about installing another app that makes the think I look at all day look a little bit better. Maybe I don't understand how you are using the term "bloatware".
It's worth it to me. App runs well. Lots of content at WC. Improves my interaction with the PC. Win.
What makes it "bloatware" if someone else wants to use it? Why are you commenting on this when it's obviously of no interest to you? There are a lot of people out there that enjoy customizing their workspace just as people enjoy Fast-and-Furiousizing their Hondas, decorating their homes, or landscaping their yard. Back off. Just because the product is there, that doesn't mean it's meant for you, and nor does it mean it deserves your negative comments.

And you don't have to use it. Just don't get all butthurt when Stardock releases something *other* people might want.
Troll post is troll. All Aboard the Failboat.
I love the compulsion to shout from the mountain tops when something isnt 'your bag'. I don't run any stardock software, but come on fruitloops, some of that stuff looks slick.
Perhaps it might dissuade some of the negative comments. I don't mind people being critical but often it goes further than just an opinion.
I actually feel a static background is less useful than a moving one. I like to keep my desktop interesting and ever changing, and a program like this aids quite a lot in that endeavor.
It's an animated wallpaper program. If you don't want it, then don't download it.
Why should we pay for a thing that already exists?
(moderator hat on) do not post links to illegal patches. DreamScenes is a Windows Ultimate only feature, linking to cracks violates our rules (moderator hat off)
Oh wait, the Deskcapes videos? And? They are just converted videos, nothing else. 2008 FAIL, yet again by Stardock, congrats.

1) Nearly all the animated wallpapers are in .dream format which require DeskScapes.
2) DeskScapes includes dynamic content and the free version includes some really awesome free dynamic animated wallpapers like water flowing on top of your wallpaper.
So tell me EL1TE why are Visual Styles better? I presume you are comparing it with Windowblinds. Let's hear your comparison - side by side - of what both products are capable of
All you're doing is taking up space so people have to scroll further down the page. :hmmm:
I've always wanted to have a Dreamscene like application on my Home Premium laptop.
The people who are writing negative comments are a disgrace to this community and it looks very bad on the community as a whole!
Just like Frogboy and a few others have said: It's an animated desktop wallpaper application. If you don't want it/like it, then why comment?
Not just that, but why comment ridiculous things like "another useless Stardock app. This isn't useless. If it was useless, why would MS Windows Vista Ultimate have it? Also, I've always loved the thought of my desktop wallpaper being animated (e.g. the drops of water idea which Frogboy referred to in an earlier comment). I am indeed going to check this app out.
Another point to tell all you naive, immature, jealous, trollers is how can this be "another" useless app from Stardock? I don't know of any useless one's at the moment. I know of an amazing one called ObjectDock - you know? The one that functions just like Apple's dock but it's on Windows and is 10 times better? Hmmm again, it's a feature on another operating system, which Stardock have made available, FOR FREE, to people who can't have access to this feature. Yes... sounds very useless to me...
Finally, how would you feel if you'd created something yourself and made it the success that the owner of Stardock has and then some naive, immature, jealous forum member insults that business as a whole and really lays into it, just because they are jealous?
These comments are hurtful, not constructive and make me sick!
I really wish they could be deleted by a moderator to be honest!

Oh and good for Stardock and good for Frog. Whiney bitches are whiney bitches, there isn't any debate. If you don't want to use something, don't. However, don't bash something unless you've actually used it and can create an informed opinion as to why it sucks.
