Java Runtime Environment (JRE) enables your computer to run applications and applets that use Java technology. Java technology allows you to work and play in a secure computing environment. Java technology is in cell phones, automobiles, the Mars Rover, and many other places. By downloading it to your computer, you will be able to experience the power of Java software. The Java Virtual Machine is only one aspect of Java software that is involved in web interaction. The Java Virtual Machine is built right into your Java software download, and helps the Sun JRE run Java applications.

Changes in this beta version:
* Improved reliability
* Improved javascript communication
* Per-applet control of JRE command-line arguments
* Per-applet control of JRE memory settings, larger maximum heaps
* JNLP support
* Per-applet JRE version selection
* Improved Vista support

This is BETA software!, please use caution when installing it on your system

Anyone else get annoyed by these constant updates?

Yeah, because I'd rather them leave the software on my machine unpatched and insecure for longer than they do.

</sarcasm>

On a serious note though, I only downloaded Java 6 Update 5 a few days ago, why are they testing update 10 now? Shouldn't it be update 6 next?

Update 6 is already out

Testing of u10 (formerly known as Update N, formerly known as the consumer JRE) has gone of for months. It's a big update with many new features so it needs a lot of testing. The "10" is pretty much picked at random, there wont actually be that many update releases before u10 is final.

The focus is of new features, so you're not missing out on any security updates by not installing this yet. I've used it for months and have had no stability issues

By "out" I presume you don't mean "available to the public from Java.com" ?

No it isn't? Java Updater and http://java.com/en/download/windows_xpi.js...p;host=java.com says otherwise, so you probably have some internal release that isn't public.

Another one who has no idea about how "reliable" Java Updater really is

u6 has been out like weeks now, yet at my work I still have to manually update Java installations from Sun website, because the built-in updater keeps giving me the u5

For reasons unknown to me, it's incapable of giving the latest version.

Been out for quite a while now and the main reason to get it is for Nimbus.
#2.1 xan K on 16 May 2008 - 13:03
that's right. I've been having it for some time now.

This build is updated, they update it silently, also it wasn't available for Windows x64 before.
