What is the latest version of MPC?
Last I have seen was 6.4.9.0 I believe, and the sourceforge page hasn't been updated in a long time.

Same here. I've never had any problems at all with it. Granted I'd probably use Mplayer but I've been too busy as of late to install Fink or DarwinPorts and get it running.
My only complaint about VLC, which isn't limited to the OS X version, is that it's SMP support is lacking hence my G5 Quad's limited ability to play 1080p video despite having waaaay more than enough CPU power to do so.

The guy who created it stopped working on it, try "Home Cinema Edition", another guy took it and continued the work..
Remove CCCP and try FFDShow.. it is much better.
when news of 0.8.6g was posted in the forum i found 0.8.6h was there on ftp too, so i downloaded that instead. now with its official release i re-downloaded it just in case something changed (the installer is indeed different). although the application itself tells me it's 0.8.6h, vlc.exe's file details tells me it's 0.8.6g, and secunia psi alerts me to the same thing...

that's called a beta
personally i use MPC + FFDshow + CoreAVC but as for it "sucking" or stopped being good, how so? the UI is crappy yea but it's far from a "buggy POS". it plays pretty much anything you throw at it and that's that. it's not supposed to look pretty or give you a ton of tweaking options; it's just supposed to play.

Typically, when the version number of software is below 1.0, it's considered, at best, beta.
typically, yes, good point, but i don't think that's true in this case, you can find links on their site to 'the latest stable release'. but anyway, this is all beside the point.
i posted a message in the vlc forum and according to them vlc.exe should be v0.8.6g not 0.8.6h, and it's secunia psi thats misidentifying an out of date, vulnerable build, when it's apparently not!
