p.s. i switched to ImgBurn+Burrrn combo (ImgBurn = DATA , Burrrn = AUDIO) a while ago and ill most likely never change burning software ever again.... both load up super fast to, especially Burrrn.

I totally second that. Nero used to be THE burning software. And don't misunderstand me, I still like it. But I want only the burner!

The other is totally full of bloatware. After the installation you have to spend more time removing all that piece of sh.t of Nero Home, search, index, etc, etc.

You won't see me installing Nero9 soon.

In the installer you can select what parts you want to install. I uncheck everything but the burner, and it works great!

ya right. caz a music producer never uses Nero SoundTrax like software. Video producer never uses NeroVision like software. so these stuffs are really bloatware.

A music producer or video producer would use industry standard tools, not Nero.

I havent used Nero sinse like version 6 or so when it started getting bloated as hell. I remember when the installer was 10mb.

Nero used to kick ass. It was THE burning software for PC. Now its just a junk filled boat fest.

ImgBurn: For when I just need to run off a ISO I already have.
UltraISO: For when I need to manipulate a ISO or make one bootable. It also handles Mac DMG images. This alone instantly sold me on it.

they are trying to compete with Roxio which is the wrong road to follow. I have heard from many it takes forever to install on this version and when you uninstall it takes your associations hostage

Your right I have a Q9450 and raid 0 it took almost 5min to install and it takes 2x longer to load than nero 8. It works good but it is slow even with a new system. Nero used to be good but now it kinda sucks.

Has anyone told the people at Nero/Ahead about a little app called ImgBurn?

It burns files to CD, builds images, rips discs, burns ISOs, creates bootable discs, extracts boot files from existing discs, lets you verify CDs that it didn't even burn, plus a ton of other features.

Just like its small and simple name, an install of ImgBurn is under 2 Megabytes.

Oh yeah, and it's free.

ImgBurn for the win.

I've been using Nero since version 5. My complaint isn't with the software, it's with the company. I just purchased Nero 8.3.6.0 Ultra Edition on 29 September 2008. On 1 October 2008 they came out with Nero 9.0. Wrote to their Customer Service Department and was told that since I had purchased the earlier version two days before the new release I would have to purchase the Version 9.0 at a discounted price of $63.95. I only paid $55.98 for the previous version. This also included a plan so that if I lost, misplaced or deleted my version I could re-download the version I purchased for an additional $5.99 for one year. What I know is wrong is the way they conduct business, from what I was told by Customer Service was that I had to purchase Nero 9.0 to get an upgrade for $63.95. From what I was told there are no updates or upgrades without purchasing a new full version. So my advice is to let Nero become like Wall Street and go tits up. I don't know of any software company that does not sponsor updates or upgrades for their product without purchasing a completely new version. That is one thing the Germans do to international customers. Didn't know that the program was made in Mannheim, Germany for distribution. There is no reason for this if the company wants to stay in business. I saved the email I received from the Customer Service Representative named Nelson. So I called the Customer Service in hopes I was told wrong. I called the Customer Service which is a toll call to Los Angeles at your expense, the hold time is about 8 to 10 minutes before you can get some half*** answer to your question. Very disappointed with the whole process, I will never purchase another piece of software from Nero. Just a friendly heads up to the people who purchase their software.

In other versions there was always an update but I guess they figured they would save time and money by promoting the newest version only. I was upset enough to go and look for my Postal Shirt and buy a plane ticket to Mannheim, Germany and look them in the face an voice my disappointment with their company. Buyer Beware!!!!!!!

So to sum up you got version 8 and now think you should get version 9 for what free? Bull **** that is not how it works. You got what you paid for period. It works like that in just about every thing you buy there will always be a newer version. You sound like a spoiled brat.

As for version 9 I found it to be noticeably faster than version 8. Everything worked just as you would expect. The install did not seem to take as long as version 8 did.

there is no support for anything bought from them. If you were dumb enough to buy Version 8 and then turn around and bought Version 9 who seems to be the most stupid?

Yep +bryonhowley is right. Even thought MS sells Vista, they still even sell XP and even 2000. Even happens in places nothing to do with computers. Like if you buy a new car, the newer model of that car comes out a few days after. Same analogy with Nero. If you so much wanted the latest version why didn't you do research to see if Nero is developing any new version before you buy?

That was the reason I kept the email from Nelson, the person I corresponded with at their Customer Service Department. Doesn't anybody read and remember anymore???????

Can't recommend it to anyone... Used the trial for a few days only and ****ed me off every day. It's noticably slower, the mediacenter stuff hardly works and indeed it took ages to install.

And also important: after you uninstall it, your file associations are messed up... plus it leaves obvious traces, uninstallation is not clean at all.
I didn't think twice to delete the whole package after that. I'm staying with my copy of 8 which I'm very happy with.

i don't believe you. after uninstalling nero 9, it leaves all your file associations screwed up. I've tested this a few times now in a Virtual image to confirm before replying to your post. this is a brand spanking new nero 9 install on a barebones Windows XP virtual image.

Installation took somewhat longer than expected.
Haven't tried it thoroughly, but first experiences with it are quite okay.

...plus the fact that I'm a sucker for newest software.

Can someone remind me why I need this software. I've never known anyone to use any of their media stuff, some of the CD/DVD stuff is useful but not a deal maker, my impression is that the actual burning software is by no means better than a lot of other burning software (some of which are free), the interface is, at best, average and in a completely unscientific test I did I had DVD burning fails. Yes, it was really good 5 years ago but its time to move on.
ImgBurn IS really reliable, has a simple clear interface (a bit small perhaps), small download, small footprint, lots of options (tucked away - I've never had a need to go near them) and it's free. You can start burning 60 secs after clicking "Download".

exactly! lol ... cause the guy who makes ImgBurn has a great rep for making 'quality' software.

so it's unlikely that what the guy said about ImgBurn failing and Nero working is unlikely.

cause in general if something fails in the burning process in most cases it's probably the BURNER ITSELF , NOT the burning software. (assuming that your pc is in decent running order and you dont have any odd conflicts etc)

and also, a general rule of thumb when burning 16x certified DVD's is to burn them at no faster than 12x... although 8x is a pretty safe bet if your concerned with 'quality' of the burned data.... especially if you dont have a really new dvd burner... but even with new dvd burners it's still best to burn @ either 8x or 12x although if your burner is pretty new you can pull off 16x burning if your using quality media like Verbatim/Taiyo Yuden.

Nero 5 was awesome! Nero 6 was acceptable. The program has been absolutely worthless crap from 7 on up.

InfraRecorder is nowadays my only installed burn software. Even stopped installing ImgBurn when doing a total reinstall. It's up to a version 0.45 now and handles all my needs of music, data and image burning.

It is still missing a few features (but I don't use them so I don't miss them anyway), and it also has a neat and tidy gui! (unlike Burrrn).

And I love the smoke effect in Vista

Nero 8 and 9 are both so crappy, they simplified the gui for the majority of idiots out there. But they forgot about people who like the advanced feature rich layout.

Nero 9 wouldn't install for me, even after running their clean up tool! I had problems with 8 hanging WMP open so I uninstalled it.

I'm glad that this one didn't finish installing; I used Roxio Creator 2009 instead now!
