No doubt many of you have frittered away several hours through the sheer exploration possibilities offered by the Google Earth program. Perhaps some of you may even have wished you could have this little application everywhere you go. If so, then you're in luck: in a posting on Google's LatLong blog, Product Manager Peter Birch announced that the Google Earth application is making its debut in the iTunes App Store today (available here).

According to Mr. Birch, the iPhone's touch interface provides a very natural way for to interact with the interface. Swiping your fingers will move the map around, while pinching in and out controls the zoom. Using the iPhone's GPS, users can instantly go to their current location in the application. In addition, Panoramio integration allows users access to over eight million user submitted photos of locations.

A handy video tour was included in the posting:

I've been playing around with it and found it to be a bit sluggish, even on Wi-Fi.

For those who have tried it. Does the GPS on it really work? also, doesn't matter if it is a bit sluggish, it's a pretty cool concept

Yes, the GPS works. Not sure how it being sluggish doesn't matter?

It's neat but way too slow to be of any use. And it just crashed on me within 2 minutes of using it. Bah!

I would use it if stopped crashing on me.
It works fine on a friend's iphone though.

Not bad, but I find it hard to navigate, sluggish and it crashes all the time.

It is a bit sluggish but even the desktop version can be sluggish for me. GPS works flawlessly though. Looking forward to Google improving and updating this app for the iPhone.

Not too laggy on my iPod touch 2G...very nice, although I really should've read about the tilting feature first...when I opened it for the first time I was lying down and I didn't have a clue what the heck was going on, heh.

That's nice...I've had the same options with maemo mapper on my Nokia N800 for a couple of years already...and it pulls all google/yahoo/msn sources and allows you to keep an offline cache which allows you to use it as a gps navigator with satellite imagery.

The tilt thing is buggy... earth just disappears of the screen when its up straight.. occurs on a touch and iphone.
