Today sees the release of the latest version of Canonical's popular Linux distribution Ubuntu, with version 8.10. The ninth release so far, it signals the debut of native 3G support in the standard installation, along with a refined default theme, a guest account (similar to the kind seen in Windows and Mac OS X), and Dynamic Kernel Module Support, meaning that newer versions of the Linux kernel can be used immediately without having to wait for third-party modules to be updated.

Ubuntu 8.10 Server Edition was also released today, bringing with it better support for virtualization, and per-user directory encryption.

Not to mention native support for installing the product to a USB device right from the installer!

Serious? Now that's handy!
Looks like I gotta get me some of this. Only it'll take a week or two before the DVD ISO is out

I can only see an ISO download, do I just burn that and then there will be an option to install to USB key?

Looks nice. I think I'll order a free disk tomorrow.

EDIT: Done that. Now I'll just have to wait few weeks.

Interesting to see at the top of the page that Neowin is powered by redhat...

Are you planning on going the same way as Wikipedia? Or are you happy where you are?
#6 Foub on 30 Oct 2008 - 23:48
I just installed it and it works with my ATI HD 2600 Pro through the accelerated drivers. Yippy!!!!! Though I had to use Safe graphics mode at boot up (F4) to see anything

BTW, I pre-ordered a disk several days ago.

If only Ubuntu would come with some way to change the themes...

Maybe in 9.04?

Good learning distro, but way overloaded. They sure do crank out the updated versions of this thing.

Is that more often than the every 6 months they used to do?

Wasn't it version 6.10 that had the long term support? Is that time frame up yet? Have they done, or are they going to do, another long term support version?

Most of the linux distribution is unplanned. i wonder! Ubuntu's final version got pre-installed Firefox Beta! Maybe they don't think it's an OS.

It has Firefox 3.03 final. Give it a try before you turn your nose down at it.

"Upgraded" to 8.10 and guess what, it broke the bluetooth mouse support. Connects once then never again. The work-arounds that worked before have been removed, so I'm stuffed. Thanks guys.

Funnily enough Windows won't connect to my mobile phone via Bluetooth, but Ubuntu does it out of the box with no issues. Compatibility issues are a minefield with any OS, Linux or otherwise.

if history teaches us anything, its that we never learn from the history ... forgot where i heard that ... but its true in this case. Every major OS upgrade will cause this. All the windows versions ... when they came out, this doesn't work, that crashes ... linux releases ... my hardware used to work ... now it doesn't. Its all natural if you think about the testing process of software. When the first one comes out, they only have limited resources to test it on. its been released one day... give it time. Its not a linux vs. windows vs. mac issue ... its just how things work. personally, i like to stay a version behind or give it at least a couple of months and see how it is going. when 8.04 came out, the same thing happened. but look at it now ... working just fine for most of the people.

by the way, did you file a bug report about the mouse problem with ubuntu? they are generally quick to answer (even if they wont fix it right away).

By saying that, I hope you don't mean anything else than a clean install, because if it isn't you're just asking for trouble.
#10.6 DecoyDuck on 01 Nov 2008 - 11:18
Don't know if it's just my extreme bad luck, but I've never had much success getting my bluetooth keyboard and mouse to work very well in any Linux.

And just so you know I just accidentally reported my own comment to a moderator. Oops! Sorry guys

Tried an update first - machine crashed half-way through and wouldn't reboot, so yes, then I did a clean install!

My MS Wireless Laser BT mouse worked perfectly with the previous 5 releases of Ubuntu; that's why I'm so "upset" about 8.10

Really weird. I tried using Mac Keyboard/Mouse (both wired and wireless, from a Mac Store)in my laptop and they worked just fine. At first the salespersons were macfaggy over it, acting quite snobbish... then they were in awe.

Yes. it has Bluetooth.

Go here and find out for yourself. It is perfectly clear that you are speaking from ignorance and not from knowing anything. I own a copy of Vista and I like Ubuntu better for many reasons and not because it is free.

Hell, I could even use *you* to prove my point.

Hardly. I've used Microsoft products for the last 25 years and I know what I'm talking about. Linux is much more stable.

That's funny as well. Have you even tried the new version of Ubuntu yet?
#11 Mohan Ram on 01 Nov 2008 - 00:56
I love it, been running since Alpha 4 and it really good. Didn't think it was going to be after 8.04.1 LTS but I was proven wrong, thankfully.

And you like paying for something when you can get something better for free or that just because it cost a lot that that automatically means that it is better? Well, if you believe all of that than I have a nice bridge to sell you in Brooklyn NY....

I am broke as hell and happy with dual booting Ubuntu and Vista.
The upgrade from 8.04 to 8.10 went off without a hitch. I am using ndiswrapper with a broadcom wireless card. I was afraid might have to switch back from the bcm43 driver after the upgrade but all of my previous configurations were left intact.

I've been a user of Ubuntu since 7.04 and this is the best release yet in my view. It just keeps getting better and I'd never go back to Windows, which I was born with (no insult meant to the Windows fans).
#14.1 Bri- on 04 Nov 2008 - 17:06
I have no intention to return to Windows either. I have tried Linux off and on since RedHat 5.1, with this release being the best I've ever used. If I could figure out how to get The Sims 2 to work on Ubuntu, my girlfriend would probably switch too.
