OpenOffice.org is an open-source, multiplatform and multilingual office suite comparable with MS Office.

It is compatible with all other major office suites and is free to download, use, and distribute. It was previously known as StarOffice before it became an open-source project. OpenOffice comes with OpenWriter - a word processor, OpenCalc - a spreadsheet and OpenImpress - a presentational package.

It is. It opens the files. It writes MS Office files. It can create new documents, and is quite feature-loaded.

Put aside your knee-jerk hatred of it because it isn't "Microsoft", and maybe you can realize that it is a good product and an excellent price.

Yikes. Don't compare it to Microsoft Office. One has a feature list a mile long the other one has a couple bullet points.

But there is a price difference and indeed you get exactly what you pay for.

For advanced users, who write VBA code in their documents, yes, the advanced features (lock-in) of MS Office makes it a requirement.

Can't agree with your implication that OO.o is so lacking in features that it is worthless. I think you are seeing things through your Microsoft-colored glasses.

I agree with Mark. I have Office 2007 on my desktop, but I use OpenOffice on my laptop, and the only difference I see is the Ribbon interface in Office.

Yay, thanks for the heads up, downloading now

The average user pays $300+ dollars for office and only uses 1% of the features.

It seems decent, but I remember when I used it, it would have slowdown issues, especially at startup. Has that been fixed?

It's more on a par with MSworks then MS Office. However, since MS doesn't make either of them for the for montioned for linux guess I'll just have to use OO.O. Great grammar, oh!, well.
