According to a report by webmonkey, the final version of Firefox 3.5 will be released on June 30.

Firefox 3.5 is the first major revision since 3.0 was released about a year ago. The new version sports a faster rendering engine, stability enhancements and a new javascript engine. It will also include support for the most widely-used elements of HTML 5 that allows for offline data access, enhanced web graphics and multimedia playback without plug-ins. The Firefox logo has also had a small revision as well.

Mozilla has been showing different 3.5 features within a 35 day period, and has also shown the new tools developers can take advantage of in the new version.

The new version was originally going to be 3.1, but was renamed to 3.5 later to reflect a greater scope of changes than what has originally been planned.

Well, Tom did mention the speed first. I also think that's the clear feature standing out here. The new Javascript engine / TraceMonkey is direly needed. It's not up to Google Chrome or Safari 4 speeds, but much much better on par with them, and the new next generation of Javascript engines.

Yep it's twice as big there!

Too bad the rest of the interface is still playing catch-up with the real Aqua provided by Mac OS X.

No. New js engine, better html5 support and better css3 support.

hmm still, Chrome's interface is much more neat and the tabs at the top make me still prefer it over Firefox.

You want tabs at the top in Firefox? How about making it look exactly like Chrome? Here you go:

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/10674

I'm using it with 3.5 right now. It's about 99% bug-free. The author says he'll fix the remaining bugs once 3.5 is officially released.

There's nothing another browser can do that Firefox can't. If it's not in Firefox there's an extension for it somewhere.

Where's your source for it being 99% bug free?

not me... because look over functionality ain't worth it and Firefox looks good enough.

but the 'extensions' are what make Firefox stand out from the pack at the end of the day plus it's the most used browser besides IE which means it's more mature to which cant be a bad thing.

I was actually using 'Avant Browser' for all its functionalities. I also use Firefox from time to time, but all the process of looking among all the plugins and extensions, installing them, keeping them updated, looking for new ones from time to time, remember to save them all safely to avoid re-installing all of them when you change pc etc. is really a pain.

With Chrome I even stopped using the Favourites, I simply add the first letters of the website I want to check in the address-bar and that's it, much quicker than finding the favourite link in the bar.

Anyway it's a matter of taste, I'm happy to have the 5 main browsers installed on my pc and use each of them from time to time.
#3.7 +dead.cell on 29 Jun 2009 - 05:13
How is it a pain? You don't HAVE to look for extensions. It's only if you want them. Also, they auto-update anyway, provided you want them to (can disable it if you don't want it). If an addon is not safe and is causing major problems for people with the browser, Mozilla can blacklist it to where it will not work as a safety measure.

Firefox also has the same functionality with the address bar. Hell, hitting "n" alone of course brings up Neowin. Only feature I like that Chrome has over Firefox is the searching ability. Still, I can search just as easily with the search bar. Not that complicated...

I'm not questioning your preferences or taste, but your reasons seem a bit silly since the ones you mentioned are what Firefox does already. Chrome does have nice features of its own...

It's a good theme - I've used it for months - but I get that nagging feeling that it's a tad bit laggy in terms of UI responsiveness. I have it paired up with Total ReChrome to paint the tab/window title background as glass.

It's a good theme, but unfortunately you don't get the benefits Chrome has for putting the tabs there at all, since the Chromifox design still has a window frame.

Yeah I see your point and believe me, I'm the kind of person that would spend hours to download so many extensions to make the browser's look and feel as I like.
And I'm doing it with my current version of Firefox, but actually when surfing I just need something that responds quickly (instantly) to the commands I give.
Firefox brings so many extra things that are good to tweak around when I don't surf.

I love it despite it's slow cold start. Why can't they reduce the start up time? That would make it perfect IMO.
#4.1 Jugalator on 28 Jun 2009 - 20:39
Agreed -- that's what makes it still feel a bit sluggish, especially if you're used to something like Google Chrome. I read that it could be on the roadmap for Firefox 4 though, which I think is what most are assuming the current trunk builds labelled "Firefox 3.6" as a placeholder version will end up as.

Here's my source for that:
https://wiki.mozilla.org/Firefox/Namoroka
Observable improvements in user-perceptible performance metrics such as startup, time to open a new tab, and responsiveness when interacting with the user interface. Common user tasks should feel faster and more responsive.

Overall, the goal seem to be to make it feel "slimmer". Firefox 3.5 feels quite appropriately named in that regard, it's kind of halfway there in terms of speed. The performance improvements are kind of a high priority goal on that release, so I don't think it'll get cancelled to favor other features.

The next version of Firefox will also get a new Aero Glass interface.

(Firefox 3.5 is code named Shiretoko, and the next major release, whatever the version number will be, is Namoroka)
#4.2 Harbinger on 28 Jun 2009 - 21:39
Well I couldn't care less about start up times. My PC stays on for ~12 hours straight and during that period FF has to launch once.

Not sure if anyone's looked into it, but Opera 10 seems to be just as slow on startup.

Just a thought--

Yes, and Opera isn't really faster after having started up either anymore. How the tables have turned. :p

You can read more on forthcoming W7 integration here:
https://wiki.mozilla.org/Firefox/Windows_7_Integration

This is the tracking bug for current W7 integration issues, click on the "Depends on" bugs to see all the W7 issues:
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=474052

This is the bug filed for W7 superbar hover:
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=474054

And it's really working in tandem with this bug as well:
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=474056

Reading the superbar bug comments, they seem to in very early stages still, mostly just discussing the Windows 7 Superbar API. So Firefox 3.6 at earliest, but it's not even scheduled for that specific version yet.

Actually, the quicklaunch does exist in Windows 7, it's just not enabled by default.

Although the location for pinned icons is

AppDataRoamingMicrosoftInternet ExplorerQuick LaunchUser PinnedTaskBar

I don't think program installers are allowed to drop shortcuts into there as they please. Maybe they can, I don't know. I'm referring to the PDC 2008 presentations where they strongly caution developers to do not, repeat, do not offer to drop links for the users - let them do it themselves.

In my Opinion it's best to do a fresh clean install, get rid of all old remains of FF 3.5 RC3 and start fresh with a clean install of FF 3.5. and another thing the check for updates won't be on the beta channel, once you go to the final one on tuesday.

Im using FF 3.5 rc3 it's running fine for me, no hangs, sluggish and i haven't run into any crashes.

How is it sluggish? are the plugins and if (your are using any) extensions are
up to date? what are the sites your visting that may cause the sluggish,
crashes and hangs your running into..

#16.2 Julius Caro on 30 Jun 2009 - 12:38
it hasnt crashed for a while, but it definitely hangs. sometimes loading the awesome bar takes too long. yesterday i right-clicked on some picture to save it and it took 2 minutes to recover. and my comp is not low spec'd. i had already noticed it on my laptop (which is low spec as hell). on my laptop it hangs way too often.

Their FTP servers are holding right now the 3.5 release but it is still the last RC3. They have published a webpage to tell everyone to check it on June 30th.

just FTP into their website, there is a 3.5 "release" that isn't the RC version. Comes up as 3.5 in the about box, without the beta or RC tag. It's most likely the release, they just haven't updated their pointers yet. The file date on the folder is June 30.

I think they usually compile it a few days before they release it. Some people are saying it's the same build as RC3, that could also explain it.
