First Firefox 3.7 redesign screenshots released

Sam Symons   on 20 July 2009 - 20:58 · 181 comments & 30042 views

Advertisement (Why?)
Mozilla's popular Firefox browser is on the up and up; with version 3.5 recently released, it's making very good progress, and now, the organization has revealed some concepts for a redesign they plan to be included in version 3.7.

Firstly, we should note that these new designs are purely ideas, and they'll only be re-making the Windows versions, so put your excited faces away, Mac and Linux users. According to the official wiki that we linked above, here are Mozilla's planned new improvements:

1. Embracing Glass: Toolbar and Tabs using Glass. Buttons translucent and slightly glossy to meld with the toolbar. Raised 3D lookachieve tactile "feel".

2. Page Button: Connect the Page button to the left side of the tab area. Directly connected to the Page.

3. Tools/Bookmark Bar: Connecting the Tools button to the side of the window to emphasize the fact that it is used for customizing and changing the UI. Adding a button next to that to toggle the Bookmarks bar which is turned off by default.

All this chat is well and good, but we know what you're really here for... the actual screenshots. Without further ado, here they are!

Looks alot more fresh. Easier on the eye too. Inline with the times i'd say but still won't use it
#1.1 AnthoWin on 21 Jul 2009 - 00:40
agreed. chrome looks good from the get-go
#1.2 Calum on 21 Jul 2009 - 01:19
emzino, any reason why you still won't use it? I'm just wondering

Because it doesn't come from Microsoft. You know you can't trust software that doesn't come from Microsoft, right?? And also Vista was the greatest OS ever, IE has been the safest browser ever, ActiveX is a brilliant idea, Microsoft isn't a monopoly, and if they are then everyone is. Maybe you can help me with my petition to get clippy back, in all Microsoft products.

And I think it is an ugly redesign, I have never liked this glass look.
#1.4 Azyr on 21 Jul 2009 - 06:42
Well it does look better then 3.5, but its going the wrong way. Both IE8 and FF need to realise chrome has struck gold with its UI. Though i don't use chrome anymore, i would love IE to have a simple UI like it does.

Wut. Chrome's UI looks like it was designed after a piece of baby blue plastic. It's a fantastic browser, and in terms of UI layout it's great, but the colours and shapes... Urgh.

Absolutely love this Fx mockup, aside from the cloned buttons - but they've got a long time to change that.

Well under XP and vista with aero disabled i agree - but with aero enabled it looks much, much more native then IE can ever hope with Vista/W7.

Chrome looks way too childish for me. I'd rather have options.

No sexy glass on the Macs!

And the non-Aero versions of the 3.7 Firefox look pretty ugly.

where's the good ole 'classic' look!

That's only because the non-Aero version of Windows, with that hideous blue, looks pretty ugly.

Macs don't have Aero. Unless you'd like to switch over to windows .

Chasethebase said,

As I've said to other people - how is it possible to make icons like that much different to Chrome's when you wish to have no colour on them? The only reason these icons look like Chrome's is because Chrome's icons are so generic. Chrome uses a spanner for the 'Tools' menu icon, this uses a spanner and a hammer; again the only reason it looks similar to Chrome's is because it is colourless (blends into the background of the UI) and it is a similar shape. There are only so many shapes you can use for an icon...
#5.6 Azyr on 21 Jul 2009 - 06:45
Eh? This is NOTHING like chrome (bar the fact that you get an inch of glass in both). Chrome is minimalistic in design and use while firefox is busy.

Just because you have an inch of glass and a few monochrome icons does not mean anything.

i saн - i like, but i'm still disappointed with mozilla development team very much. it takes so long them to fix important bugs and add important features. theme was just an ugly piece of crap for a long time. and 3.7 won't be released before end of 2010... places (history/bookmarks module) was not optimized for 3.5 after all - still gigantic memory leaks and hangs...
#5.8 solardog on 21 Jul 2009 - 15:35
I instantly thought Chrome when I saw this, I cant stand the UI of chrome. Chrome is a gigantic, clunky looking browser...IMO.

By "minimalistic" I'm sure you mean "lacking in features".

And the fact you're taking this so seriously shows you're just scared that your precious Chrome isn't as amazing as you thought it was .
#6 +Capric0rn on 20 Jul 2009 - 21:04
I think it would look nicer if the tab bar actually had a background, like in IE. The shadows aren't fitting in with the style that Aero has either IMO.

Besides all that it's a nice first mockup, it's great to see them adapting Aero. Can't wait to see updated mockups
#7 sCrAtCh420th on 20 Jul 2009 - 21:06
i kinda like it looks easy on the eyes
#8 Ambroos on 20 Jul 2009 - 21:09
Since we can already do this I suppose it shouldn't be too hard with just some updates to the resources! Maybe something I should try once I find some more time ^^

I'm disappointed this wont be on linux builds (if it does go ahead)
#9.1 Arkose on 20 Jul 2009 - 22:01
Why would it? Mozilla aims to have a a native-style UI on each OS rather than forcing them to all use the same one (as with Chrome and Safari). Aero is the logical route to take on Vista/7, but it makes no sense on Linux (or even XP for that matter) because Linux distros don't natively have glass effects.

If you really want a glass Firefox on Linux there is sure to be a way to do that, but Mozilla won't do it for you.
#9.2 LiquidSolstice on 24 Jul 2009 - 05:12
Because this doesn't fit teh Human-Tango style at all.

Ambroos didn't create Glasser. Ambroos used the Glasser extension and expanded on it to make everything glass The Glasser extension on its own just glasses the toolbars and not the tabs, bookmarks bar or status bar.

An so, the expansion All Glass 2.1.2 does make tabs and menus, status bookmark bar. Everything is glass except the buttons. That's why Mozilla's version would be "50%" better than All Glass, former "Glasser" or whatever.

If someone just modifies the Strata Default Theme with half-transparant glassy white buttons you can get exactly this result! Except for making the frame Glass my addon does nothing, themes still apply (even though some themes break the effect)

What? Having the title on the tab helps you identify it, and having it on the "title bar" lets you see the full title.

What space is being wasted? What would you have in that space instead?
#14.4 i_was_here on 21 Jul 2009 - 03:10
Vertical space is being wasted. Chrome combines the tab bar and titlebar leaving for space for content (sites).

DARKFiB3R said,

The web page.
In Chrome, if it was maximized, the whole top got replaced with tabs, and if you want to see the full tab, just hover over it.
#14.6 Starchild on 21 Jul 2009 - 19:28
Funny: this is one of the main reasons why I use Chrome. It just makes too much sense.
#14.7 LiquidSolstice on 24 Jul 2009 - 05:14
Funny. You guys are scrimping over maybe 10 pixels of vertical space. Unless you're running on a netbook, you really shouldn't be giving a damn.

The title of the news post is a bit misleading in that it refers to "screenshots" when in fact they are merely design concepts/mockups. The actual content of the post correctly references that they're concepts, but I just thought I'd mention the miscommunication.
#16.1 DomZ on 20 Jul 2009 - 21:36
Technically they're mocked up screenshots

I like it, mostly. It is a much needed improvement. The only thing I don't care for is the Page button. It's a little too Chrome-like for my tastes.
#17.1 Calum on 21 Jul 2009 - 01:36
If you can think of a better icon to represent a 'page', I'd really like to hear your ideas

I certainly can't think of anything else. It may remind you of the Chrome icon but that's because Chrome's icons are just really generic.

Menu bar can be easily hidden now. Technically the new Menu button which appears in the top left corner when the menu bar is hidden is Tools + Hidden menu bar in one.
#18.4 +Smigit on 21 Jul 2009 - 00:29
Thats nice, and IE has looked fairly similar for some time too. Who cares? It's not like Chrome doesn't borrow elements from basically every browser in existence.

@Phantom Helix: +1 looks A LOT like Opera 10 and yes u can remove menu bar and customize it in ANY way you want/like it.
@rm20010: not just now u could do it even in Opera 8 u just had to add a custom button manually and in Opera 10 its automatic now.
#18.6 LiquidSolstice on 24 Jul 2009 - 05:15
Aha.

I knew there would be a Crhome fanboy in the midst who would call "copycat".

Seriously, get the **** over yourselves. Mozilla doesn't need to be all "revolutionary and ****", they already accomplished that with Firefox.

Remember your roots. Before Chrome, you know you used Firefox and loved it.

#21 Mikee99 on 20 Jul 2009 - 21:37
I love it! It looks modern and great. The current Windows theme is horrible, IMO. The concepts for 3.0 were excellent, but somewhere in the development of the final release, things just went way sour (to the way it looks now).

I like the new look, weather or not it's abit too much, in terms of transparency. But still, if they improve speed and performance, I'll still be definately happy with it. I'm using Firefox 3.5, and apsolutely love it. But I'm not sure if I will keep the default design with 3.7.

Thank you, simon!!!
#27.5 +Xerxes on 21 Jul 2009 - 04:34
If you read the article, you'd know this redesign is Windows exclusive. Linux and OSX get no new GUI love, but it hardly matters as Firefox is skinable after all
#28 2Cold Scorpio on 20 Jul 2009 - 22:21
I like the Win7/Vista version with Aero enabled; that's the first time I've seen the Firefox UI not looking like crap (not counting third-party skins, of course, which at least make the FF UI bearable).

Looks like a bad combination of IE8 and Chrome. Like someone has tried to copy Chrome in Photoshop. You know when you first got Photoshop, discovered Blending Options and just used drop shadow on everything.

Mozilla's websites are beautifully designed, but all their software always looks half-finished.

Chrome is beautiful though. It's so slick and simple. The little animations in it are perfect too.

IE8 is as nice as they can make it. They're limited because they use Windows APIs for everything. It does make all the different interfaces match though, which is nice. (Plus they have great logo designers.)
#29.1 +dead.cell on 20 Jul 2009 - 22:39
I call BS on that one.

There's no lens flare.
#29.2 Calum on 21 Jul 2009 - 01:40
I think this is much better than Chrome's look.

I find that the horrible blue colour of Chrome gets annoying after a bit.

Also, they use the most awful icons for folders and for the star.

Finally, there is no favicon in the location bar suggestions, when typing and there is also not a 'tags' option in the bookmarks (again, something which appears in Firefox's location bar suggestions).

No it doesn't. IE8 looks like other parts of Windows. Chrome looks like tacky blue plastic with a bit of Aero at the top.
#29.5 LiquidSolstice on 24 Jul 2009 - 05:17
Chrome looks like crap. It's baby blue buttons hap-hazardly mixed with some Aero elements and you bandwagon jumpers all scream "fresh!".

I don't understand why the new look is to be SO simple... a toolbar makes everything, such as history, accessible with just one click instead of 2 or more...
#30.1 Memnochxx on 20 Jul 2009 - 23:41
You're right. Let's make everything accessible with one click. It's better that way.
#30.2 Calum on 21 Jul 2009 - 01:40
I only have the things I need all the time on the toolbar.

I rarely need to view my history as it comes up in the location bar, to match what you type.
#30.3 +Smigit on 21 Jul 2009 - 05:59
keyboard shortcuts are probably quicker...and anyway, you can just add any buttons back onto the UI.
#30.4 geoken on 21 Jul 2009 - 14:46
If history is something you frequently use you could add that button to the toolbar. The fact is most people don't use all the items in the menu bar, I can't even remember the last time I needed the 'File' menu, and pretty much everything in the edit menu can be done with keyboard shortcuts or contextual menus. I can't recall ever seeing someone select text then move up to the edit menu to copy it.

It makes a lot more sense to make that menu modular and in the worst case scenario let you totally reproduce it yourself (which is already possible via adding new menu bars with text only menu items.

Indeed.
/sarcasm

NOT.

So, they've finally scrounged up the balls to implement Glass and abandon scroll bars completely.

I hope they implement the Protected Mode scheme that IE8 and Chrome are using.
#31.1 geoken on 21 Jul 2009 - 14:50
I'm guessing they just missed the scrollbars although I'd love it if they ditched them and went with iPhone style scrollbars which don't affect the content area (aka scrollbar flickering on and off as content is being animated).
(1 reply) #32 Max™ on 20 Jul 2009 - 22:45
Why have they removed the scroll bars?

It looks gorgeous though.
#32.1 rm20010 on 20 Jul 2009 - 23:12
Mockup flaws. Just like how the XP mockups use the font smoothing method seen on Linux and OS X.
#33 Frankenchrist on 20 Jul 2009 - 22:50
Looks a lot like Chrome, which isn't a bad idea! Once Chrome gets some extensions, Firefox will be history for me (after using it for 5+ years)
#34 MulletRobZ on 20 Jul 2009 - 22:59
I like this. Hope those new buttons styles make it over to the Mac version!
#35 TonyLock on 20 Jul 2009 - 23:08
Still has nothing on Google Chrome!
#36 bbfc_uk on 20 Jul 2009 - 23:09
Its about time - the UI drastically needs updating!
(2 replies) #37 rm20010 on 20 Jul 2009 - 23:10
Say goodbye to the ugly blue toolbar background that Firefox currently uses for Vista/7.

The mockup for Aero Basic looks pretty good too.
#37.1 geoken on 21 Jul 2009 - 14:53
Don't blame Firefox, that blue toolbar is part of Windows. It's the default toolbar and if you are trying to respect the system theme it's the one you'd use (since it changes if you use a different msstyle).

#37.2 LiquidSolstice on 24 Jul 2009 - 05:19
That was a really uneducated statement.
#38 joontje on 20 Jul 2009 - 23:28
This needs to be built into a theme, dont wanna wait for FF3.7 !!
#39 daniel_rh on 20 Jul 2009 - 23:42
I'm not a FF lover but I must say that I looking forward for this new version.
#40 Jelly2003 on 20 Jul 2009 - 23:44
I absolutely love it! Can't wait till elements start appearing in the nightly builds!
Currently (and for a while now) in the nightly builds there is the option to hide the menu bar.
#41 gonzo68 on 20 Jul 2009 - 23:44
Is there any link to download it yet from nightly build place ?
#42 Draje on 20 Jul 2009 - 23:50
I'm gonna troll and say that these screenshots suck and vimperator pwns. All hail the mighty keyboard!

Anywho, these themes are good, but seem rather unfitting in their environments. I would prefer themes that look integrated with the respective version of Windows.
#43 Jimmy422 on 21 Jul 2009 - 00:00
Looks cool, but it looks a little too much like chrome / the safari 4 beta. Ugh, i can't stand either of them.
(1 reply) #44 +Glorious on 21 Jul 2009 - 00:00
Just as long as there's an option to put the menu bar back (if they do use these designs for 3.7), I like it otherwise.

Glorious said,

Yeah exactly, I use mine way too much to ditch it for a "Tools" button.

I like it as well otherwise, maybe a bit too much form over function at this stage, but I bet that will be improved upon from these concepts.
(2 replies) #45 AfroTrance on 21 Jul 2009 - 00:15
I don't get the 'looks like chrome' comments. I've got FF3.0 atm and this just looks like that with Aero. I only just looked at a Chrome Screenshot, and it looks basically the same as FF3.0. So really Chrome looks like FF looks like Chrome...

In truth the browsers look so basic/minimalist/generic they all look like each other.
#45.1 Azyr on 21 Jul 2009 - 06:54
False, FF looks everything BUT minimalistic, which is where chrome comes in.

They don't even get close together.
#45.2 AfroTrance on 22 Jul 2009 - 02:20
Azyr said,

What the hell are you talking about? The only noticable difference between them is the standard File/Edit/etc toolbar, a search box and the location of the tabs.
#46 dlegend on 21 Jul 2009 - 00:15
I personally think it looks great. Though on the ugly colored background (IMO) it is harder to tell.
(2 replies) #47 Kreuger on 21 Jul 2009 - 00:19
Firefox is just getting more and more ugly, just to fit into Vista's Aero. I can't stand what theyre doing to it.
#47.1 superkid on 21 Jul 2009 - 01:20
I love the theme, looks amazing be perfect for windows 7.
#47.2 Azyr on 21 Jul 2009 - 06:56
What are you talling about, this is the only step they've taken (photoshopped) towards an aero integration that shouldve been done 2 years ago (at least). FF is ugly because it's designed that way.
#48 +xiphi on 21 Jul 2009 - 00:29
These look great! If only they can make it look as good or better when it's released.
(1 reply) #49 Julius Caro on 21 Jul 2009 - 00:31
a much needed revamp. why they decided to go with that ugly design for firefox3 is beyond me
#49.1 Persecuto on 21 Jul 2009 - 00:35
That's one of the things "Themes" are for.
(1 reply) #50 AnthoWin on 21 Jul 2009 - 00:37
Makes Microsoft's own IE8 look even more clunky, clumsy, and out of place. But only if you have glass does this look better than Chrome.
#50.1 Azyr on 21 Jul 2009 - 06:57
True, while i'm not a huge fan of theese mockups, as a IE user i feel like IE could do with some polish too. Maybe a simpler design ... one can wish
#51 m.keeley on 21 Jul 2009 - 01:01
Looks good. An improvement on the current look.
#52 duntkno on 21 Jul 2009 - 01:14
luv it. i hope it looks something very close to it. cant wait for it.
#53 superkid on 21 Jul 2009 - 01:21
Looks amazing, love the look. Can't wait for 3.7 to be released!
#54 TcKrockZ on 21 Jul 2009 - 01:32
wow loooks great!!! but is it me or does it look a bit like chrome?
#55 DanielZ on 21 Jul 2009 - 01:50
The Mac version seriously needs an overhaul, because it just looks like a bad Safari ripoff at this point.
#56 Skullpture on 21 Jul 2009 - 01:54
Has anyone else noticed that all of the major internet browsers are starting to look like one another? Eventually they will all look close to identical.

I'll stick to Chrome just because it seems to suit me better. However, when Chrome gives me a hard time I'll temporarily switch to Firefox.
#57 mocax on 21 Jul 2009 - 01:56
for some reasons, ff3.5 performance goes downhill after about an hour or so of continuous usage.

had to restart the program before it got unbearable.

safari 4 had it worse though, it just crashed. it's the only app that crashes in windows 7 rc so far.

IE8 and Chrome were just fine. Probably due to the tabs running in multiple processes. (ie. the processes were created and killed as i open/close tabs)
#58 LAMj on 21 Jul 2009 - 01:56
It's only time before the nutz over userstyles replicate this for ff3/3.5. I might even start on it as a matter of fact.
#59 iwod on 21 Jul 2009 - 02:04
Well i definitely like the new design over the current one. I think it will be easier for new user too.

Although i definitely hope Firefox will get some much needed speed improvement and slim down. I dont expect it to be fastest. But anywhere close to Chrome or Saferi will do. Currently they are just way faster.
(2 replies) #60 ThaCrip on 21 Jul 2009 - 02:04
me personally i don't want them to change the core layout of Firefox v3.5 as i like it the way it currently is... i still hate IE7/8's layout as you gotta relearn where all the options are etc etc... just confusing as i would rather keep it like it currently is with 'file/edit/history/bookmarks/TOOLS/help'.
#60.1 superhuman on 21 Jul 2009 - 02:12
The current layout and design is ugly as F***.
#60.2 ThaCrip on 21 Jul 2009 - 02:35
superhuman said,

i don't mind 'some' tweaks like the color to make it transparent etc but i just don't want it to look like IE7/IE8 does with the 'tools' completely in a different place since i been used to the current methods (as i said above) for ages and it sucks relearning something after THAT LONG.

but it appears i wont have much choice
#61 superhuman on 21 Jul 2009 - 02:11
now, it is worth talking about. Nice job. Waiting many years for this day.
#62 jasondefaoite on 21 Jul 2009 - 02:45

It's all well and good Mozilla releasing yet another version, but alot of the addons don't work with the current version.
(1 reply) #65 Bemani Dog on 21 Jul 2009 - 04:10
That's a pretty drastic change. You sure they won't eventually rename "3.7" to "Firefox 4"?
#65.1 lordcanti86 on 21 Jul 2009 - 04:38
After it gets delayed a couple of times....it'll be FF4
#66 lordcanti86 on 21 Jul 2009 - 04:37
Hopefully, they keep the native Vista/7 look, rather than going with an updated XP style native skin like FF 3.0/3.5
(1 reply) #67 Dead'Soul on 21 Jul 2009 - 06:16
they are too late for make up. and this design is still behind chrome.
#67.1 Azyr on 21 Jul 2009 - 06:59
And amazingly they cant seem to play catch up with it. I'm especially dissapointed in microsoft, had high hopes for IE8 seeing that we were getting great UI's for some time now.

But even with a great example of what a browser should look like, they still cant get it right.

I mean how hard is it to copy?
(1 reply) #68 redfox2200 on 21 Jul 2009 - 06:45
New UI + x64 would be great cant wait
#68.1 Azyr on 21 Jul 2009 - 07:09
IE has x64 and offers nothing more to the user. None of the plugins work (flash and silverlight for example), and the speed is the same. We don't really need x64 at this point fo time, but it would be sweet if we had it fully working of course.
#69 tuxplorer on 21 Jul 2009 - 07:45
So why is every browser besides IE copying each other's toolbar icons?
#70 kev_gordon on 21 Jul 2009 - 07:59
I think it looks great! Can't wait.
#71 k7of9 on 21 Jul 2009 - 09:06
I love Firefox but I have basically accepted I will always have to mod Firefox to look good and be practical. Mozilla just doesn't get UI design. There have been several UI refreshes during it's relatively short lifetime and almost all of them have been bad. This one is no exception, it's a mess.

I understand glass is cool and all, but should't it be limited to the window border and toolbar? Didn't the Safari 4 beta prove it's a bad UI idea to have tabs use glass? It's pointless and reduces readability.
Why does the tools/bookmark area need that weird and pointless frame around it? Why do the icons totally not fit with Windows Seven?
A page bar button on the tab bar? Great, like the new tab button another space wasting button on the tab bar. What's wrong with a new tab button on the toolbar?
Why is the least used UI element (the adress bar) given the most prominent position and size while other much more used elements (tabbar) have to sacrifice more space with every release?.
It's starting to look like IE.
Mozilla get your act together and come up with something truly innovative and good looking instead of changing the icons every two years and adding some buttons.
#72 Imran Hussain on 21 Jul 2009 - 09:07
These are just mock ups. Tell me IF they implement them
#73 brittosa on 21 Jul 2009 - 09:14
Where are the scrollbars ??? Maybe it appears on mouse-over?
#74 Jacob P on 21 Jul 2009 - 13:32
The buttons look a lot nicer, though they need to work on positioning.
The XP theme on Vista would look a lot better.
On XP, though, they still curve the bottom part of the tab bar, even though it doesn't extend around the window.
They still haven't combined the stop and reload buttons, nor have they combined the search and address bar.
I wonder if the tabs will be more chrome-like, and not tear unless explicitly told to.
(1 reply) #75 dimithrak on 21 Jul 2009 - 18:17
YUK!. to all developers at FF HQ. Open IE8 and this version of FF side by side.. ANYTHING LOOK THE SAME TO YOU?

comon!.. be more creative.. thank god this is just a prototype.. although I know and have faith it will get better
#75.1 simon360 on 21 Jul 2009 - 22:42
Why would they try and reinvent the wheel?

Besides, all they did was adapt so there was no menu bar. There's only so many ways to do that.
#76 solardog on 22 Jul 2009 - 00:11
I vomited a little in my mouth when I first saw this. I am a Firefox fan tho, its taken the top spot away from Opera for me and Opera had been my #1 for about 6 years.
#77 M_Lyons10 on 22 Jul 2009 - 00:22
Nice. I like it. I look forward to this new redesign when released (And I'm sure it will get lots of tweaking on the way).
#78 Gully on 22 Jul 2009 - 20:48
THats awesome but would be even more awesome if someone made a theme like this for FF 3.5!
#79 Chris4 on 22 Jul 2009 - 23:46
Firefox is turning into Chrome :-/
#80 WebDev010101 on 23 Sep 2009 - 22:06
Why do all these companies keep removing the Menu Bar by default, how do you expect new users to cope with these retarded layouts that are no intuitive, make it option to turn it off but please for the love of god leave the menu bar on by default.

Look at all the "white space" around the title, the nav bar and buttons etc... if you are looking to save some screen space compact that but don't remove the only common, easily understood way of using a program!

That and all these rounded semi-transparent windows really have to go, what a waste of PC power, effort and screen real estate.

PS Firefox keep popping a javascript error every few minutes on your site, try and catch are your friend! Wish someone would tell Yahoo that as well.
