Java software allows you to run applications called "applets" that are written in the Java programming language. These applets allow you to have a much richer experience online than simply interacting with static HTML pages.Java Plug-in technology, included as part of the Java 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (JRE), establishes a connection between popular browsers and the Java platform. Java allows applications to be downloaded over a network and run within a guarded sandbox. Security restrictions are easily imposed in this environment.
Thanks to Neowin members franzon and shaz3e for the news tip!

I ran IE and looked in Manage Add-ons. There's a "Java Plug-In 2 SSV Helper". Is this what you mean?

If the filename has an s at the end, before .exe, then it has yahoo toolbar. If it doesn't have the -s then it doesn't include the toolbar.
Weird. Mine has the -s at the end, but there's no Yahoo Toolbar. I even extracted the installer and went through all the files.
I have it set up in Ketarin so it downloaded the installer via Filehippo.
What must-have Java apps do people use??
Eclipse is a must have IDE for lots of developers which also needs java to run.
Whilst web applets are diminishing they still exist. Just yesterday I was playing with a lisp interpreter running under a java applet.
Personally, JRE is a must have for any system.
And since I'm a F1 fan too the Official Live Timing on f1.com is a Java Applet (can't really watch a gp without it anymore).

:-) Of course if you're a Java developer the runtime is a must, but so far...I've only got two replies, and both included developers.
How about end users? What are their must-have Java apps?

Ninjavideo.net 's video download applet is in Java
I'm beginning to understand why everybody's saying that, excluding server-side development, Java as a mainstream language is dead.
Indeed ... it's right here.
