Java software allows you to run applications called "applets" that are written in the Java programming language. These applets allow you to have a much richer experience online than simply interacting with static HTML pages.

Java Plug-in technology, included as part of the Java 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (JRE), establishes a connection between popular browsers and the Java platform. Java allows applications to be downloaded over a network and run within a guarded sandbox. Security restrictions are easily imposed in this environment.

Did anyone else notice the lovely addition of an optional Internet Explorer toolbar that is checked by default during the installation? Shame on Sun.

Didn't see anything, but I don't use IE. Usually the first thing I have to do after updating is remove the "next generation plugin" from Firefox.

I ran IE and looked in Manage Add-ons. There's a "Java™ Plug-In 2 SSV Helper". Is this what you mean?

If the filename has an s at the end, before .exe, then it has yahoo toolbar. If it doesn't have the -s then it doesn't include the toolbar.

Weird. Mine has the -s at the end, but there's no Yahoo Toolbar. I even extracted the installer and went through all the files.

I have it set up in Ketarin so it downloaded the installer via Filehippo.

Argh, I only just checked for this the other day!

People still install Java runtimes? I think the last one I did that was in 2003 or so.

What must-have Java apps do people use??

CISCO uses the Sametime IM program which is written in Java.

Eclipse is a must have IDE for lots of developers which also needs java to run.

Whilst web applets are diminishing they still exist. Just yesterday I was playing with a lisp interpreter running under a java applet.

Personally, JRE is a must have for any system.

I agree with PCBEEF (I'm a Java developer after all).
And since I'm a F1 fan too the Official Live Timing on f1.com is a Java Applet (can't really watch a gp without it anymore).

:-) Of course if you're a Java developer the runtime is a must, but so far...I've only got two replies, and both included developers.

How about end users? What are their must-have Java apps?

Cisco Call Manager's webUI will not work as well as a range of java applets on wesites - without this installed

I play Runescape every now and then... that needs it...

I must say I'm very underwhelmed by the examples given so far.

I'm beginning to understand why everybody's saying that, excluding server-side development, Java as a mainstream language is dead.

I just had to install Java because the R Project for Statistical Computing software uses it for its html help search function.
