Microsoft accelerating IE6 to IE8 upgrade with donations

Microsoft's Browser for the Better program is a very generous one; with every copy of Internet Explorer 8 that is downloaded from the site, the company will donate 8 meals to the Feeding America charity. They don't want the giving to end here, though. Microsoft has now added a new form of incentive to the program, stating that they will offer double the amount of donated meals for every time somebody upgrades from IE6 to IE8.

The initial amount of meals that was to be donated was 8 (well, at least $1.15, the reported equivalent), so that means the charity will get 16 free meals for every time a person upgrades. This certainly is an offer than everybody can benefit from. Feeding America will get free donations, which is obviously always a good thing, and Microsoft will be rid of the hassle of dealing with much older software versions, whilst increasing their Internet Explorer 8 market share. Lastly, this is great for web developers; IE6 is a thorn in the side of those wishing to create websites, so with less people using it, it will allow them to sleep a bit easier at night.

If you'd like to help out with this, head to the download page on the Browser for the Better site and help out a few Americans. Keep in mind that the maximum amount donated is US$1,000,000, and that the deadline has been extended from August 8 to September 30.

This is all Microsoft seem to be doing these days, paying users to use there products. This reeks of a company running scares, or running out of ideas. The fact is, people still using ie6 are stuck on it, because of Microsoft making the most incompatible browser in recent history.

Hey, they could have just given people food without the IE8 downloads too. I've downloaded it even though I don't plan to use it, I just wanted to feed some hungry people. Anyway now we know that IE8 downloads does not = IE8 users.

They are not just giving away money, they are paying people to upgrade to ie8, to increase their own market share, so they can brag about how many people use ie8. If they want to give away money, they can go ahead and do that. But they are not. This is no different to paying people.

I can't believe I have to explain this to you guys.

In a way this is a win-win situation, and a very clever marketing technique. However easily exploited.

1. They give the benefit and motivation for people to download simply for a good cause and morally it's good.
2. They use the above to spread IE8, using their huge amounts of money, the more people who use IE8 = The more bing is advertised (default) and the more ads are clicked etc etc.

My opinions, I'm always **** at showing my point of view anyway, what goes on in my head doesn't always make sense when written.

Great, more jacked up XP machines to fix >.> Hey, I'm all for IE8 on Windows 7. Fast, smooth, and no issues, but on XP it causes me more headaches on a regular basis, more people ****ing and moaning about slow browsing etc etc. Hell, I'm fighting with an XP machine right now with IE8 that won't even try to install flash player. IE 6 on XP til you upgrade to Win7 IMO.
#5.1 cakesy on 01 Sep 2009 - 01:53
Agreed. While at first this doesn't seem like a bad thing, they are just paying people to upgrade to their newest browser. Now while this is better than people using ie6, it robs people from getting a geniunly better experience on the internet. Everyone will still think that the internet is slow, broken and ugly, and it is all just ie8 fault, and the fact Microsoft wont spend any money on it.

I mean, all props to the ie team (except the ones who had a hand in ActiveX), but we all know that microsoft has only hired like 2 people to reskin there old browser, with a few changes.

It's people like you who make my life (and millions others) a living hell. Isn't it enough that Youtube started the trend of NOT supporting IE6 for both its inferior browsing experience and poor support for web standards? Leave IE as it is, and install Chrome if it's an old machine and performance is all you need. Much faster than any IE version out there, and excellent on web standards.
#5.3 carmatic on 01 Sep 2009 - 13:51
i agree... im using 3rd party browsers in xp all the way, the only time i used IE was for the initial windows update website visit, and to download firefox...
well firefox runs kinda slow on my netbook, so i am on opera and chrome now...

Come on people there is a recession, and at least MS is attempting to help. Instead of complaining and coming up with a thousand-and-one excuses why MS is doing this; go to their Download site and do the easy thing, download a copy of IE8 and feed 16 people. What is it going to cost you, a few minutes of your time.

what are you talking about? do you speakish the english...
#7.3 cybertimber2008 on 01 Sep 2009 - 12:16
You changed your post. It used to talk about how you could bearly get IE8 to move, and how you thought people should stick around with IE6 on XP until they updated to Win7 where IE8 flew.

Don't try to make me look silly.

...and for every IE8 you don't download, UN-marked bags of wheat will be poisoned.

what ms could do is donate all those meals to those who really need it like the homeless and the cost they could send me a cheque to cash for some money.

I know you're joking but it is a sad comment that you ask for a handout when you're using the Internet, which is a luxury.

I wonder why MS didnt include IE8 in their SP3.

Or at least a home SP3 (with IE8 ) and a corporate SP3 (without IE8 ).

Because SP3 was finished a year before IE8 was released.

SPs doesn't include new software version like WMP11 or IE8

Sounds to me like you're not a very good tech. And what are you moaning about? If you can't stand the heat, go to work at a real job..Like McDonalds

Incoming "Americans don't need food!" from people from other countries. Before that happens I want to point out, there's a lot of people in America that don't have any food to eat. We're not all fat pigs.

Pfff that's easy!

I could easily get 9 meals out of $1.15... 9 packadges of Ramen noodles... are what 10 cents? plus cost of water and heat...

I always thought that those emails saying:
"Bill Gates will give a penny to charity every time this email was forwarded... Forward to everyone you know!"
were fake. I now feel such a b'stard for deleting them!

This is great, now that about 10% of Amerikans are claiming food stamps ( http://uk.reuters.com/article/idUKTRE5314B320090403 ) Bill is giving something back... Well done!

What would it look like if that 10% were queueing at soup lines as happened in the first depression of the 1930's

Incentivising upgrades with donations to charity? I smell desperation. Clearly they can't convince users on browser merit alone, for why else would they do this? The prospect of upgrading must be so unappealing that they have to resort to tactics like these. Perhaps they should instead consider recommending Firefox xD
