Apple has just earlier released version 9.0.1 of its media software, iTunes, bringing a number of bug fixes to the release which was made available during its iPod event not long ago. Macworld has detailed all of the changes, explaining some things a bit better than Apple's official release notes.

When you update, you'll get the following set of notes, straight from Apple:

• Resolves issues browsing the iTunes Store.
• Addresses a performance issue where iTunes may become unresponsive.
• Fixes a problem where iTunes may unexpectedly quit.
• Fixes a problem syncing Podcasts in playlists to iPod or iPhone.
• Fixes a problem sorting albums with multiple discs.
• Addresses an issue with the Zoom button not switching to Mini Player.
• Improves application syncing for iPod touch and iPhone.
• Genius is now automatically updated to show Genius Mixes.

What's interesting is that the issue with the maximize button on iTunes versions 8 and older has returned (well, an issue for some, yet a good thing for others). That is, on Mac OS X, clicking the maximize button would shrink the player into its mini format, whereas in iTunes 9 you could do that by holding Option, then clicking maximize. Many found this an improvement as the mini player isn't used often, but the old style has returned, regardless of user preference.

To update, use the 'Check for Updates' option as usual, or you can find it on Apple's download page.

Second time (other dvd software) in years where an app has actually had bugs that effect me haha. Glad to see these fixed.

Still search is broken for me. For example, I cannot search "Bjork" anymore, now I have to type "Björk", what a hassle!

How is that "broken"? Sounds like it is working as it should.

If it worked in a previous version... I don't see why it would be a "feature" to make searches harder (although more specific)...

Hmmm, 15MB via Apple's software update. Could it be they've gotten their **** together when it comes to minor updates?

Strangely I had the x64 version installed and it updated me to the x86 version, stupid asshats

x64 only runs in emulation mode anyway, right?
I wish iTunes would respect my wish to uninstall/leave out Apple Update/Bonjour/Mobile crap - have to wait ages for the install then uninstall all this crap just to get a bug fix (disc numbering)

You can install quicktime alternative, then extract using winrar itunes.exe. You'll have all the individual files... delete everything except itunes.msi and the application support (which is absolutely required now). Then open itunes.msi in command line by typing: iTunes.msi /quiet

I know it sounds complicated here.. but it's satisfying being able to delete 5 stupid apps before they even install Not too hard, i promise.

I'm still waiting for the developers of QuickTime Alternative to update it so that it works with iTunes 9 and I can make my custom installers without QuickTime.

I use it just to update or reset my iPod Nano 3G but also use it in unattended installations.

Is there a feature to remove broken files/links automatically in version 9? all the previous versions lacked this must-have feature available in all library managers...

Check the forum on quicktime alternative's website. There is a topic in the support forum which has a link to a beta version of the new QTA. The reason why there's been such a delay and it's not final is because they can't get it to work with media player classic... but hey, itunes installs and runs great.

I cant seem to upgrade from 9.0 on my desktop using software update or downloading the whole thing. My laptop was able to just fine.

it blows up your media monkey install, don't update if you use mediamonkey

There's a beta of MM that fixes iTune 9 issues. Check their forums.

This is one of the undocumented fixes they did:

iTunes 9 SDK was broken for SelectedTracks but now 9.0.1 fixes it.
