VirtualBox is a family of powerful x86 virtualization products for enterprise as well as home use. Not only is VirtualBox an extremely feature rich, high performance product for enterprise customers, it is also the only professional solution that is freely available as Open Source Software under the terms of the GNU General Public License (GPL).

Presently, VirtualBox runs on Windows, Linux, Macintosh and OpenSolaris hosts and supports a large number of guest operating systems including but not limited to Windows (NT 4.0, 2000, XP, Server 2003, Vista), DOS/Windows 3.x, Linux (2.4 and 2.6), Solaris and OpenSolaris, and OpenBSD.

VirtualBox is being actively developed with frequent releases and has an ever growing list of features, supported guest operating systems and platforms it runs on. VirtualBox is a community effort backed by a dedicated company: everyone is encouraged to contribute while Sun ensures the product always meets professional quality criteria.

Can't say anything else than a big thank you to the developers of this outstanding software that just keeps getting better and better!

Make sure you try it if you still haven't (which you probably have if you're a neowinian)

Has drag 'n' drop yet?

I still get the weird corrupted display (vertical lines) when restarting the guest OS sometimes.

This is quite good. I like Virtual PC but I don't think Microsoft is going to continue to update it now that they're distributing the newer version and i don't have a VT processor.

I just did a quick comparison between VMware Player 7 RC and VBox 3.0.8 using Windows 7 as host and Ubuntu 9.10 as Guest.

Drag and Drop
VMP - Yes, Host to Guest and Guest to Host.
VBox - No

Full Screen Mode
VMP - Can span dual monitors.
VBox - Cannot span dual monitors.

Unity/Seamless Mode
VMP - Windows are freely movable across multiple monitors. Guest OS Taskbar is not displayed on screen and opened program windows are integrated into Windows 7 Taskbar. Guest OS Start/Programs menu button appears when you hover over the Win7 Start Button for easy access to programs.
VBox - Only works on Primary monitor, broken when invoked on Secondary monitor (Guest OS disappears into a black hole, impossible to return unless you remember the hotkey to exit out of seamless mode (R-CTRL+L). Guest OS Taskbar is displayed on screen, not integrated with Windows 7 Taskbar. Program windows are confined to Primary monitor.

I have been a user of VBox since the 1.x days, but I have to say VMware Player 7 has won me over with its new functionality to create VM's.

That maybe so, but the hideous UI is keeping me well away from VMP I know functionality wise it's better then VBox but the UI is too much of an eyesore, even the icon is hideous I know it's purely personal taste but till they do something about it, I won't be trying VMP anytime soon.

Thanks for that extremely one sided feature comparison biased towards VMP.

Btw, can VMP do 3D yet? Didn't think so.

Actually, VMP has OpenGL support now

Windows Virtual PC doesn't support drag and drop because it's deemed to be a security risk.

I tried VBox on Win7 RTM yesterday and my bloody keyboard does work in the VM which makes it useless to me!

I had troubles with the mouse, and I got it working shortly after.

Virtual PC 2007: Drag and drop works for me. Between Vista host and XP Guest and vice-versa.

I've never really had a problem with Virtual PC except for it's lack of 24 bit colour mode, which makes installing a Linux guest more complex than it ought to be.

Great for the price but doesn't yet match up to VMWare.
