Fraps is a universal Windows application that can be used with games using DirectX or OpenGL graphic technology. In its current form Fraps performs many tasks and can best be described as:

Benchmarking Software - Show how many Frames Per Second (FPS) you are getting in a corner of your screen. Perform custom benchmarks and measure the frame rate between any two points. Save the statistics out to disk and use them for your own reviews and applications.

Screen Capture Software - Take a screenshot with the press of a key! There's no need to paste into a paint program every time you want a new shot. Your screen captures are automatically named and timestamped.

Realtime Video Capture Software - Have you ever wanted to record video while playing your favourite game? Come join the Machinima revolution! Throw away the VCR, forget about using a DV cam, game recording has never been this easy! Fraps can capture audio and video up to 2560x1600 on dual-core CPUs (1152x864 single-core) at up to 100 frames per second!

What's new:
  • DirectX 11 support
  • Compatible with Windows 7 final (RTM) and RC1 versions
  • Stereoscopic 3D Vision video capture up to 1920x1200 for D3D9 games
  • Force lossless RGB option to always capture video in pure form
  • Ability to mix both game sound and external input such as microphone (Vista/Win7 only)

The new version has some desktop and UI related problems, not function related (I haven't tested all capture features yet). I'm using it on Windows 7 64-bit and it creates both a systray icon and a taskbar entry (double entries). Also the fraps window flicks visible when logging in before it minimizes to the taskbar. The window size also becomes to small when opening Fraps, and as its not possible to resize you cannot get it back to see the right most entries.

After some testing, the window is getting smaller each start, after restarting a bunch of times it is now as small as a window can be and doesn't change. But it means almost none of the options are visible. Dunno if it is something else in my system that it doesn't like, but I have a fairly clean installation.

That sounds like the greatest defect in the world!

Yeah, the thing with me not being able to close the taskbar window but still keep the program running in the tasktray is really bothering me. I always used the minimize to tasktray functionality before to be tidy. I think I'll roll back to 2.9.99 for a bit... ^_^

This new update is great. Now I am finally able to record my voice while recording videos with Ventrilo running.

I've always wondered why there's no option to change the FPS counter's font, size and color. Would like to have option for something less in your face.

And the screenshot link shows the old UI.

Problem on XP-32 (and 7-64): The movie FPS setting keeps resetting to 30 on every run of the app.

Fixed already:
3.0.1 - 8th Nov 2009
- Added minimize to systray option for Win7 users
- Fixed video capture frame rate defaulting to 30 fps when Fraps loads

Updated to v3.0.1, but it did not help my shrunken application window. Its still way to small and as it's not possible to resize it stays that way.

I found how to reset the window size now. But every time I restart the application the window shrinks again so the bug is still there for me. In registry HKCUSoftwareFraps3 there is an dword entry called "Window3", if I delete that entry it resets the window size to default on next start.

Awesome; thanks for the heads up.

It's a great tool to have, but my only annoying issue with it is that I lose a lot of FPS if I start to record.
