Sony Caught Editing Halo 3 Wikipedia Entry

The original entry stated: 'Halo 3, the third game in the best-selling Xbox game franchise Halo, is a highly anticipated first-person shooter video game under development by Bungie Studios for the Xbox 360 and is expected to "set a new high water mark" for next-generation games.' However, a sentence had been added which reads: 'Although it won't look any better than Halo 2.'

Although the edit is time-stamped at 25 April 2007 15:12, just 39 minutes after the original entry was made, it has only recently been discovered that the revision was made by someone at one of Sony's studios. The detective work was made possible by a Wikipedia scanner invented by an American student which makes it easy to see who is editing entries on the site. Wikipedia tracked the page edit to the IP address 217.18.23.2, which routes back to Sony Computer Entertainment Europe's studios in Liverpool.

The page has since been restored to its former state and Wikipedia has locked the page from any further edits for the time being. Halo 3 is due for release in the UK on 26 September, but has already broken the record for the fastest selling game ever, topping one million pre-orders in early August.

Its amazing how many peoples moms are named Xbox360 or PS3. Thats whats going on here right? People insulting each others mommas? Yo Xbox360! Yo PS3! Yo momma! WIIIIIIIIIIIIII! Oh yeah!

It's great I love reading more and more news that craps on Sony and the PS3.. No matter what people post and say, the PS3 keeps gaining strength and it's making certain ppl upset for some reason.

Gaining strength? Despite the PS3 being newer and "superior" as the Sony fanboys will tell you, the Xbox 360 is selling more each month than the PS3 according to the last set of figures I saw posted here on Neowin.

I didn't say anything about the Xbox360 in my post. Can you read , you ****?

There was no need for that, I didn't insult you personally did I? No.

The term "gaining strength" implies gaining strength in the market. But it isn't. The gap between the PS3 and the Xbox 360 in terms of numbers sold is increasing.

Ah ok gotcha, thanks for clarifying what I didn't say

Since you say you didn't mean gaining strength in the console market, maybe you could clarify what you DID mean?

don't be hating man, dont be hating ... is all good, sony,m$ ... intel, amd, ati, nvidia .. all good ... whatever rocks your boat (like the titanic)

CREEPY!... not for the act himself but for the facts that editing a single comments in just a lousy page (like wikipedia) can generate a news and there are people spending their life into track any "mistake" in their domains (halo 3 wiki) and searching that in fact their ip is from Sony.

SO WHAT?!

I guess everyone missed the part where even companies have edit their own wikipedia pages to make them look better. Everyone from the CIA to Average Joe's done it, whether it's out of hate, laughs, personal gain, or boredom, it's been done.

What's next? Nintendo "enjoys/promotes porn" because one of their IPs was tracked back from a porn site? Pfft.

At the end of the day, we are just people. Some of us just don't know how to accept that.

Meanwhile, companies like Apple run commercials that bluntly say PCs suck, get a Mac and no one cared.

The problem is that someone at Sony edited information on a competitor trying to make them look bad.

You just described every comparison ad on TV "Brand X sucks buy Brand Y we're better"

How does this make Halo 3 or Microsoft look bad? I mean it just said that halo 3 is not going to be any better than halo 2. How is that defamatory? It's not like they said Halo 3 will cause cancer. And how did this stupid insignificant thing generate 50 comments, most of which want to bash Sony?

You missed the point entirely.

Many companies, governments, agencies, and any sort of group of people have done it. Hell, even the group of people who watch Steven Colbert's show have done something of the like. This is nothing new, and nor do I feel it should reflect the company for just one person's actions. You don't blame Nintendo if one of their employees decides to go on a shooting rampage, right?

A database of 34.4 million edits, performed by 2.6 million organizations or individuals ranging from the CIA to Microsoft to Congressional offices, now linked to the edits they or someone at their organization's net address has made.

Some of this appears to be transparently self-interested, either adding positive, press release-like material to entries, or deleting whole swaths of critical material.

this is such a stupid article. I do favor MS but the article should have been "bored obviously nothing to do on the ps3 sony employee edits halo 3 wikipedia entry". ok lol maybe the my attempt at humor was unnecessary but you get the point Sony as a company had nothing to do with this.

I despise Sony as much as the next guy, but it's a little unfair to assume that a single employee represents the organized tactics of an entire company.

I like how all the kiddies are turning this into a "what I think about Halo" debate, as if anybody cares about your opinion. The fact is, someone representing Sony made a childish decision. Some of your reactions to it are pretty childish as well. You fanboys always amaze me. You'll defend your company of choice to the death, wrong or right. Grow up already.

I fail to see why this is on the main newspage, and not in "gamer news", or why it's even news at all.

Was it posted on the main news when Diebold did the same thing? Or Fox News?

Oh my god! they didn't! If i was Microsoft i would sue!!

Someone tell me what the problem is here because i read it and im still trying to work out what the problem is. Someone at one of SONYS studios edited a Wiki entry to poke fun at a game on a competetors product (and thats a generious description since it was basically one line). Big deal? Change it back and move on. I thought the whole point of those sites was to get input from people ~ and if its wrong its corrected. But just because this person was working for SONY its "OMFGWTF" ???

Was it a slow news day?

soooooooooooooooooooo ... i do not see the problem ... big deal ... people should get a life ... is a game for crying out loud .... are pixels rendered on a monitor .... sony added a sentence so ... ... better watch out . the sky is going to fall ... stupid

I stopped reading and skipped to the end after about the third o in that first word, and yet you have the balls to call something else 'stupid'. Right.

Yeah and now they've been caught they'l no doubt have a minutes silence and wear black armbands.

sony isn't playing fair... Sony, this is really sad you've come to this stat of mind to edit a friggin wiki over your competitor.

How bloody moronic i have come to expect this from Sony and all of their employees I mean how immature can you get seriously?

And yes I would find it just as immature if it was Microsoft or its employees doing this kinda thing but they're not are they?

Sony needs to get their **** together and realize this is not a playground they have a good system but seriously need to look at how they manage things...

you got that right! ;)

p.s. cause when is all said and done (if you ask me) halo is "just another" shooter in the pack thats just "ok" and nothing special.

cause most of the other mainstream shooters are better than halo.

THAT is the entire problem with Wikipedia. Even as a fan of that site, there needs to be a better editorial staff to fact
check every edit. The problem with that, is you would have to have a staff running 24/7.
Perhaps until an edit could be posted, it has to be fact checked, and, stamped with who sent in the edit?

Indeed curious and funny... but where is the problem? It doesn't look much better than Halo2, so the sentence added was almost correct. Truth can be so disgusting...

Have you played it? Halo 3 looks hugely better than Halo 2 (as it should, being on such vastly more powerful hardware).

im one of the people who thinks the halo series is overrated BIGTIME... it's just another shooter but for some reason it got popular.... reguardless of what i say, halo3 will sell ALOT of copies.

cause theres MUCH better single player shooters out there that are quite a bit better than halo is.... the main character aint all that interesting, the weapons and that great as i like military weapons better than that futuristic stuff etc etc etc.

also you said "Halo 3 looks hugely better than Halo 2" ... sure it "looks" (like visually) better than halo2 but ill bet the game is pretty much the same gameplay wise as it's always been which aint that great... not bad but nothing special.

Firstly, the Wikipedia edit said it won't look "any" better. Secondly, it does look a lot better. I'm no fan of the Halo series (dull, repetitive games with barely any plot) but the edit is just nonsense and designed to slander Microsoft.

Hugely better my a*s. based on the screenshots and stuff i seen it only looks "hugely better" in screen res. and texture res. not much else. aside from that it looks exactly like halo 2 did.

Yeah, because we all know that screenshots are the perfect way to view things in motion.

Trust me, if the screenshots, and then later video, were any hint.. it wont look any different than halo 2 aside from the things i mentioned above(higher res, improved textures, and that's about it). When i think "hugely improved visuals" i think of something like the leap between the releases in other series'. For example: ut2004 and ut3, 2 games which have near the same time between releases as halo 2 and 3. Those 2 games have a clear difference between releases, a difference not so evident in latest halo. Until someone can show me something in halo 3 that brings a generational leap like that, or atleast close to it, then, well, there isnt anything left to argue. Cause the game really isn't "Hugely improved" like the blind fanboys would have us believe.
