Sony: PS4 sales surpass 7 million units worldwide

Sony continues to issue updates about its overall sales for the PlayStation 4 console. Today, the company said that worldwide, its newest home game console has sold over 7 million units since it launched on November 15th to April 6th.

Sony's press release comes about six weeks after the company announced PS4 worldwide sales had exceeded the 6 million mark. The company also announced today that over 20.5 million copies of PS4 games have been sold, either as physical copies or via download, since the launch.

Microsoft has yet to offer up a worldwide sales update for its rival Xbox One since early January, when the company said that over three million units were sold since its launch on November 22nd. The last concrete sales numbers from the company came in March, when it said that 258,000 Xbox One units were sold in the U.S. in February.

Thursday, the NPD Group is slated to offer information about console software and hardware sales in the U.S. in March. It will be interesting to see if the double impact of the launch of Titanfall combined with a $50 price cut from some major retailers will give a boost to Xbox One sales.

Lets be honest here I love my ps4 and xo but the only reason Sony is announcing this constantly is not just because its so much better but because its the one of the only positive things to announce to their shareholders so everyone doesnt abandon ship. MS is not hurting at all and doesnt NEED to announce numbers to make themselves look good right now. Not to say they wouldnt gloat about being number 1 if they were but they have no need.

QFT.

If you take Battlefield 4 as a basic example:

Platform / Players
PC / 2,485,155
PS3 / 1,216,666
PS4 / 1,237,598
360 / 1,007,130
One / 721,139

You can make some estimates about how far ahead or behind a platform is.

They'll (ms) publish sales figures in the quarterly sales figures, just like they said all along,I only mention this as some people are taking the lack of figures as a bad sign.
I personally expect ps4 to be doing better, but the lack of numbers is expected.

I'm an xbox one owner and even I think it sucks. Wish I'd bough a ps4 now to be honest.

Funny you should say that. I own both the PS4 and the XB1. I have yet to buy a game for my PS4. I should have waited to buy it as, I have done nothing with it but set it up, up to this point. How about I trade you my PS4 for your XB1.

I would be interested in a trade, can you send me a private message?

Great sales figures considering the ps4 still retails for £349 in the uk yet the xbox one has had to drop their price from £429 to £349 and include titanfall.

How cool would it be if Nintendo went third party and started releasing console games on the PS4 and XB1? They're much better systems than the Wii U and they wouldn't have to deal with making a usable interface or online system which they can't seem to figure out.

It is not gonna happens.

Maybe not soon, but I hope it does. Nintendo hasn't been making good consoles lately and their services suck. The Wii U has been out a year longer than the PS4 and XB1. PS4 has already outsold it and XB1 almost has.

I think Nintendo would do well as a third party console developer. Everyone loves Nintendo games, but many still won't buy a console for them. I don't plan on getting a Wii U anytime soon if ever but I'd gladly pick up the new Smash Bros, Zelda, and Mario Kart on my PS4 or XB1. And they'd look better. Mario Kart would also have a usable online capability and community.

I have a PS4 (and a One for that matter). It's funny how people always have to drag Microsoft into the matter. Just because Sony announces something, doesn't mean Microsoft has too. People love to be on the Microsoft hate wagon, but Microsoft ain't broke no time soon.

Is it any different than when Microsoft does something and people have to bring up how much "worse" Sony, Google, or Apple is?

I mean, if we're going to finally call out the nonsense for what it is, it'd be nice if we could just be equally consistent about it... :ermm:

I agree with you 100%, but can you link me to one or two of those instances that you speak of. I'd like to ready the articles.

Most of the time what I see is people bringing up how much worse Microsoft is even when they do something good, to which naturally the other party has to respond. Not that any of it is good but I see much more irrational hate directed at the company than by its fans towards others.

Wait, how many markets is the PS4 being sold in vs. the XB1? Or is it just more convenient to ignore that? :)

Only Microsoft can be blamed for that.

Do you think during one of their meetings some low-level person in marketing mentions: "Guys let's release the console in the fewer countries so people on forums can always claim we're losing because we're in fewer locations globally."

Marketing manager: "Brilliant idea!"

Msft also has Kinect+Voice
kind of a different ballgame for them having to localize everything imaginable, not just a language pack

That was their choice though. I mean, many people just want to play video games, not wait until September just to get the Kinect...

Ha-ha, funny you should say that. For 5 years the PS fans complained about the 1 year head start that the xbox 360 had over the PS3. Couldn't one argue the same thing in these markets that the PS4 has a head start in those markets? Lol...Just saying.

Playstation 3 wasn't beating Xbox 360 in its home market, US. This time they are. As well as other markets where the two consoles are both selling.

The internet is largely unrepresentative of the real world man. Nobody really gave a flying crap about the Xbox having a headstart...

I agree with you on that. As it applies right this instance.

Good point and I agree with you.

However, the home market's doesn't account for the entire 7 million sold. The question isn't on who's leading (at least not for me) but, the representation of the respective numbers.

Titanfall just won't be enough to spur the kind of numbers MS wants. Found it disappointing myself.

Microsoft is still suffering from the trollish reporting from blogs like the verge, etc.

What kind of numbers do you think MS wants? You're kidding yourself if you think they were dumb enough to think Titanfall would put them at par with the PS4. Only the internet brought that up, not MS.

Maybe not, but surely more than they have now I'm sure.

no single game failure or success will change my choice of console. but it is the DRM that scared people off xbone

But there is no DRM and the reason they planed on implementing the DRM they were planning is so they can scale lower prices for all customers.
