Sony reveals future PS3 3D firmware update details

Earlier this year, Sony revealed that it would be providing 3D firmware updates for the PlayStation 3. The updates were announced to occur in two phases. The first phase that they announced was the 3D game firmware update. This update occurred at the end of April. The second announced phase was the firmware update to enable 3D Blu-Ray playback. It is scheduled to occur in September.

However, according to The Sixth Axis, "In addition to the narrowed release window, Pocket-Lint are reporting that there will be a third 3D related firmware update for the PlayStation 3, which will bring 3D photos to the platform. " This is very interesting news, and offers us a glimpse as to just how serious Sony is about their commitment to 3D. They have also recently announced updates for their Digital Cameras that will allow them to take 3D photos.

Sony announced at E3 that they intend to push 3D Blu-Ray as hard as they pushed the original Blu-Ray format. If they have their say, 3D will become the next major popular video format. The biggest hurdle that Sony and other consumer electronics companies must overcome is the perception by a majority of the public that the 3D glasses that must be worn to enjoy the format are nothing but a pain. The 3D gaming firmware update is the first step in that process. So, will Sony's 3D push succeed? Only time will tell.

My issue isn't so much with the glasses(other than the fact they run $100+ dollars. I can't see 3D.

same here. I can't see in 3D. At least I won't have to spend money getting a 3D TV

Once glasses do pass as everyone is saying it is, the 3DTV will be here to stay for awhile but I don't want to make the change, like from black to colour, now 480i to 1080p now to 3D its all happening way too fast.

Honestly Its nice to see them push the feature out there for those that can use it however, Not only will i never be willing to spend the money on a Television I have to wear special glasses to look at however, My vision has an issue to which I CANNOT see anything on those 3D Televisions or even a 3D movie in the theaters. It simply looks normal and slightly fuzzy to me and nothing more. I also know many other people that are the same way. So if they go 3D only for something then they are going to make a lot of folks angry.

Should be good. Quite like 3D in movies and games, from the few I have experienced so far. You forget about the glasses after a while.

As I mentioned above, I certainly do forget about the glasses after viewing for a while. However, 3D without the glasses will be even better. It is all a matter of a preference.

Well this aint fair.. They need a new way of seeing 3D. I wear glasses and I need them to watch and I'm not wearing two pairs at once... 3D suckkss they need to make it without glasses

Heres an idea.......

Step 1: setup a company that makes 3d glasses
Step 2: Patent the action of clipping the 3d lenses onto any regular pair of glasses with a proprietary clip
Step 4: profit!

Seriously though how hard would it be for someone to make clip on's without the frames?

Except tvs do not use polarized glasses. The technology is very different. You can't just slap a lens over top your current glasses. Would be nice as the price for them is 100+

No, no one wants to wear glasses to watch TV. And for someone like me, it is very uncomfortable to wear an extra pair of glasses.

I do, and I don't mind, I recently sat down for an hour instore with the glasses on and no problems at all. Your comment 'no one' is a little presumptuous.

I worked at for a research institute between 2006-7. Whilst there I was taken on a showcase tour of 'future rooms' kitchens, living rooms, hospitals, banks etc. They had a Panasonic widescreen 3d TV on a wall mount. The screen was around 42" and did not require 3D glasses to experience the 3D effect. Just wait a few months, the glasses will pass

Once the lcd manufactures begin processing the technology that doesn't require glasses, I'm sure we will see another update, if their current implementation doesn't already support it, I'm not certain which end does the processing at this moment.

Right, in-store, not in your own home though. Non-glasses requiring 3D displays are out there, they're just too costly for the home at the moment. Give it a few years.
