Sony to discontinue 80GB PS3, says retailer memo

"The 80GB version of the PS3 is going closeout and won't be replaced at this time," reads the unverified memo. "Only the 40GB version of PS3 will be sold in Best Buy stores at this time." As the memorandum notes, "this means that there currently isn't a version that is PS2 compatible." Of the three major game territories, North America is the only location currently supporting a multi-system lineup. Both Japan and the U.K. have already dropped former models to support a single, and cheaper 40GB model that lacks backward compatibility. Sony of America abandoned the 20GB and 60GB PS3 models last year, leaving two available models: 40GB ($399) and 80GB ($499) versions, the latter of which uses software to playback a limited number of PS2 titles.

I'm a little late but, I been busy :P

I'm thinking about getting an 80gb PS3, probably from eBay...

But one thing that influences my decision to do so is its ability to play PS2 games...

So can anyone tell me for sure, are the 80gb models able to play all the PS2 games?
TIA

i got the 60gb and just bought the 40gb for my kids. they rather play ps3 games their preety smart they see the diffence in quality. I would imagine that the dualshock 3 hopefully will be coming out. I miss the rumble along with that white 40 gb. im curious to see what happens to the bigger gb systems. well see

It could just be Best Buy changing its inventory, but my guess is that there hasn't been a big stink raised about PS2 compatibility, so they're axing it.

About PS2 emulation. Its dead. Sony in Japan retired the last sku's of PS3's that had PS2 compatibility a month or so ago. This is probably the US doing the same.

I agree. I bought a PS3 solely to play Blu-Ray movies, but much to my surprise, I have been gaming with it more than I have with any system for a long time. The loads of demos and cheap downloadable games (Stardust, Pain, and Loco Roco have kept me occupied for HOURS) are a ton of fun, and I love Ratchet & Clank and Burnout.

There are going to be loads of games coming they already are and they rock. That no games coming out saying is dead bro.

Interesting, perhaps they are planning on enabling software emulation of PS2 software on the 40Gb Model in a future update? of cause this is wild speculation and probably wrong :P

It's more like all those payoffs to studios sucked the money out of them and now they have to dump all other models and keep the one where the features and quality are sliced..

Hey, maybe next version won't have Blu-Ray drive at all

Shortly we'll have PSii with no hard drive.. to compete with Wii. LOL

I'm kidding...
