Sony tries to take some of next Xbox reveal's thunder with PS4 design teaser

When Sony officially announced its plans to launch the PlayStation 4 game console in February, the one big thing the company failed to show was the console itself. At the time Sony executives said they wanted to wait for another time to show the console's design. Shuhei Yoshida, the president of Worldwide Studios at Sony Computer Entertainment, seemed to downplay the idea that the company needed to show the design immediately, saying, "The console is just a box."

Today, Sony finally gave the world a look at the design for the PS4 console. Unfortunately, the video posted on YouTube was a teaser for the final reveal that Sony says will come on June 10 at its E3 2013 press conference. The clip had a blurry image of the console that was edited with extreme close up shots of the PS4 case, nearly all of which can't really be pinpointed as to their actual features.

The PS4 teaser video comes just one day before Microsoft hold its next Xbox reveal event in Redmond, Washington. Unlike Sony's first PS4 press conference, Microsoft is expected to show the final design for the next Xbox game console on Tuesday, along with announcing other details on the hardware and software behind it.

I want a thin sleak machine that you can snap the Surface into and use as a portable gaming device... what do you reckon my chances are?

Slim, I'd say.

Always been a PlayStation guy myself but willing to move to Xbox if you can game online for free, which I seriously doubt unfortunately.

Wow, didn't realise i managed to stumble upon the official Xbox site.

The comments on the front page articles are getting more and more ridiculously one-sided.

I would pee myself laughing if the new Xbox would be revealed completely without a bull**** show, such as if they just showed the console first thing.

How old are you? lol. I'm buying both so I don't care either way, but seriously ... are you still a kid? If so, you're forgiven a little for this childish attitude, and desperate hatred for a company... but only a little. Because who gives a crap?

Sony did their announcement early just to get in front of the Xbox, despite not having much to say about it. I think we'll get a lot more information from Microsoft's announcement.

Childish timing of this video's release aside... this video shows absolutely nothing apart from a giant black monolithic box. Though this is snot after all, so I suppose Monolith Station 4 is to be expected :-)

Edit: stupid autocorrect changed Sony to snot lol, I considered fixing it, but I thought it was funny so I've left it :-)

Oh my! After that video Microsoft is really shaking in their boots!

oh absolutely. What will they do now that it's been revealed that the PS4 has corners?? LOL

The appearance of a console was very important back in the days when they used cartridges, since they had to be out in the open and interacted with constantly. While the Xbox/PS/Wii still use some disc media, it is becoming less important over time. Controllers are wireless and a lot of games are available as downloads - probably much moreso with this next generation. A simple box is all most people want. The "that looks stylish" thing is not important, the specs and interface are.

And even when it WAS really important, it would be laughable to handle that as it's own separate reveal... You show what it looks like at the initial reveal... You don't tease it a month or more after the reveal... That's ludicrous...

It's... it's... BLACK! I totally did NOT see that coming. We also now know that it has a shape. Which is also good because things need to have a shape, it's important.

HAHAHA, indeed!

What is the point of the video? It doesn't make me any more interested to find out what the PS4 looks like. If anything, it just makes me annoyed that they won't show it and now I have lost interest and couldn't care less.

Yeah, I agree entirely. This is really a pathetic attempt at building *some* momentum...

I'm really looking forward to the PS4. Although the look of the console doesn't really matter a lot to me, I'm still kind of excited about it. Have loved my PS3 ever since ditching and selling my 360 for it, and am really looking forward to this holiday season, :-)

That didn't show off enough to be remotely interesting. Apart from the Number 4 that could have been a PS2, PS3, any DVD player.

The way it looks is much less important than mobile devices and laptops. Make it as small as possible and black or gun metal so it doesn't attract attention. Something like the roku or mac mini is fine, but it will have a optical drive so it can only get so small.

i'm just looking forward to the next xbox at this point.

Oh ... so you do care what it looks like?

You beat me to it lol. Some people continue to use "I could care less" to mean the exact opposite. Lol.

what? no, I really don't. it's just icing on the cake, imo.
i'm looking forward to the next xbox because ms publishers the games that I care for and I'm really looking forward to how the whole gamerscore system will be transitioning over to the new xbox.

and the next step for xbox live and xbla is pretty exciting as well.

You missed his point Avi :-)

Indeed. Although I don't take his view ... I do care what it looks like because my living room is badass looking and I have to have beautiful items sitting in view And I will be buying both PS4 and Xbox3 so I'd like them to look nice

So it will be black and have pointy angles ... yay ... oh and the number 4 on it somewhere. *yawn* as others have said, it really does not matter outside of an initial launch. The damage was already done when they revealed without it ...

I agree. And then to *still* try to stretch it out, now I'm annoyed. LOL

I don't expose my console out in the open anyways. The design although has to be aesthetically appealing it isn't the final decision to get it. What is on the inside and the titles will be the final reason.

Obviously they will bundle with the Kinect 2.0 wide angle camera and make it really shine. Xbox still kicking but in sales.

Wow... I hope it's that blurry in real life... /sarcasm

I don't know who Sony's kidding, but I don't think many people really care at this point. They should have shown the console at the reveal, but didn't. Who cares what the console looks like at this point? What I mean to say is, it in no way warrants a separate (And delayed) reveal...

Hate to break it to you, the thing uses so much eclectic that it literally has an electron cloud surrounding it and causing a blur because of how fast they travel around the device...
