Source 2 engine in development

An investigator known as Barnz, over at ValveTime.net has been rooting through the Source Filmmaker script files and has uncovered more than 60 references to the next generation engine that Valve is developing. Line 1387 of file vproj.py is the most noteworthy.

'''Return an str with the current engine version. If key doesn't doesn't exist, assume 'Source', otherwise invalid -- assume next-gen 'Source 2'.'''

There are references to Source, Hybrid and Source 2 scattered throughout the same file, with Hybrid being the base that Source 2 sits on. Barnz alse stated that Source 2 uses the same pipeline as Source, so the BSP file format for levels will more than likely remain. As of yet, there are no references to DirectX or OpenGL, but the investigation is still ongoing.

Initially designed to power first-person shooters, Source has been used to create RPGs, side-scrolling platformers, puzzle games, MMOPRGs and RTS games. And as it was designed to be constantly updated, it remains in development to this day.

Valve has stated that the Source engine is “about to get even better.”

I just hope they don't launch EP3 in Source 2. It would just feel too removed from the rest of the series. They should finish off HL2 in Source, and launch with HL3 in Source 2.

I feel like it's too late for Episode 3. This October it will be five years since it's release and almost seven years since Half-Life 2's release.

I wonder if "source 2" will actually be able to provide visuals that can impress, or if it'll just be source all over again. Ok looking, but never anything special.

I don't think you were around when Source was first on the scene.... it was definitely something to rave about!!

this could also just be speculation, and that line of code was just a comment made by one of the original developers under the impression there was gonna be a version 2 , not there is going to be.

this game on linux will rock. talk about challenging windows. I wouldn't mind using a free open source OS and pay for games like this. devs could probably save many headaches to get away from MS's ever changing gaming framework. video card manufacturers would have to write code for drivers on linux and this would legitimize the OS
