Spotify working on Windows Phone 8 app

A Windows Phone 7 version of Spotify is unavailable for Windows Phone 8 users.

At its launch event for Windows Phone 8 last month, Microsoft said 46 of the 50 most popular apps would be coming to its new mobile operating system. One popular app that hadn't been officially confirmed for Windows Phone 8 was Spotify. According to a comment from a Spotify representative, however, a version of the app for Windows Phone 8 is in the works.

In a statement to Robert Brand at WPCentral, a Spotify representative said the company is "working on a Windows Phone 8 Spotify app and to watch this space." Spotify emailed Brand a response within minutes of his request for comment.

That statement follows previous responses from Spotify representatives on the company's support forums that said it was unclear if or when a Windows Phone 8 app would be released. Two weeks ago, a representative from the company said Spotify would "love to be available for all sorts of devices but we can't say if or when a Windows Phone 8 application will be available at the moment" in response to a question regarding the availability of a Windows Phone 8 Spotify app.

Spotify currently has an app for Windows Phone 7 that isn't usable on Windows Phone 8. This is the first time the company has confirmed plans to bring the music streaming and online radio service to Windows Phone 8 as a new app. The Windows Phone store website currently isn't showing the Windows Phone 7 version of the app, although Windows Phone 7 users can find it by searching the store on their devices.

Why the flying-flip would I care about what other people on Facebook are listening to, or vice-versa? As if their heinous 'opinions' and nauseating 'Click Like if you fink solider's orphaned sons are bwave' faux-compassion aren't bad enough - goodness knows I don't want to know what their simpleton taste in music is.

It's important that this new Windows Phone 8 Spotify app shares music listens to Facebook, just like the iPhone app does. The Windows Phone 7 app doesn't, and that is irritating because only being able to share when using certain devices renders the listen sharing feature pointless.

Good, but I also want a Windows 8 'metro' app to compliment it.
At the moment Spotify does a much better job of helping me enjoy my current music alongside streaming external music. Xbox music doesn't seem to help me find things in my own collection first, and seems to play ads even when listening to my own stuff.

I agree. The focus with Xbox Music is "We have a big collection of music" rather then you've selected the music you like. It's strange since everything Microsoft does with Windows 8 and phone is all personal and made for ME, but Xbox Music is everything but me.

Spotify is made for ME. They just add their collection as an extra to mine. And I think that part makes Spotify that big

I sure hope they release one.

Anyone know why the WP7 spotify app isn't avilable for WP8 devices? I thought all WP7 apps was compatible with WP8 devices.

spotify was one of the exceptions to the standard app builds in wp7, their app probably broke in wp8.

Ah, ok. Well, the one they have is full of bugs, so they're better of making a new anyway.

For the sake of WP8 users, I hope this version is better than their Android app.

What's wrong with the Android version? The newest redesign is awesome, IMO.

I hate the fact that when you download a playlist for offline use, it clones itself under a new "downloaded" category. I much prefer how it does on the iPhone where it just puts a green symbol by the playlist.

I don't know what your talking about. After the update a while ago the app works flawlessly.

what is the infatuation with spotify?

Being able to use Spotify for £10 a month means I don't have to spend £10,000+ in one go (money I don't have), in order to be able to listen to pretty much every artist I enjoy. I believe Spotify is awesome value for money because without it, I simply would never be able to listen to all of the 800+ artists I like, as I wouldn't be able to afford to buy all of their albums.

In terms of why I have an infatuation with it over its competitors, the reason for that is because I currently believe it's still the best. Xbox Music, as was the case with Zune, is brilliant, especially as it provides a much better user experience than Spotify does; however, unfortunately, Spotify has it beat in the social aspect of music (i.e. Spotify shares my music listens to Facebook), which is one of the most important features to me right now.

That's the Windows Phone 7 app in the screenshot, although I imagine the Windows Phone 8 version will look similar.

Ah well that looks good anyway, I like the design
