Start8 0.87

Start8 is an application that brings back the start menu in Windows 8 and adds more functionality than the previous start menu had. This update brings a new feature which when enabled will automatically load the desktop on login instead of the normal start screen. This means you can skip the start screen entirely and login right to your desktop.

The other features of Start8 include:

  • Adds a start button back to your taskbar
  • Adds control over the "Start" menu size on the Explorer desktop
  • Adds option for the "WinKey" to show fullscreen "Metro" desktop - Adds Run... option via right-click menu
  • Adds Shutdown... option via right-click menu
  • Choose a custom Start button image

Start8 is a free download and you must be running the Windows 8 consumer or release preview.

Fails to show the desktop if you use auto logon to log on to Windows 8.

Auto Log in enabled here and it has not failed once.

There is much to like in Win8 but the decision to dump the start button, for desktop users without touchscreens, is baffling. Start8 has made it usable for me, though I would prefer a menu and folder structure more like Win7 start.

Example: If you choose to show Administrative Tools in Win7, one extra folder appears in the Start Menu and you can access all tools through it. But if you show Administrative Tools in Win8, it dumps ALL the components higgeldy-piggeldy on the Start Screen. This is a great big stupid leap backwards for usability.

Downloaded, then installed and with ten minutes uninstalled the application. It is just as easy if not easier using the present win 8 start menu. Not saying it isn't good, albeit since using win 8 since the developer release it just seems easier using the installed start system.

I may have to check this out when Windows 8 RTM is released!

I wonder if it will make a big difference in user ability and allow Windows 8 to operate more like Windows 7? I am still on the fence about upgrading to Windows 8 or not as I am not a huge fan of Metro. So I wonder if this Start8 software will greatly improve the user experience on windows 8.

Im serious. I don't know anyone that gives a crap about the start menu. My mom uses Windows 8 with ease and didn't once ask about a start button

From the response we have received, I'd say there is a ton of people who care.

I'd download it but i dont know who could use it. My mom doesn't know anything about pcs except email and facebook and even she doesn't use the start button lol

I really hope you are being sarcastic about who could use it...
