Steve Jobs wanted to "destroy Android"

Steve Jobs, the late founder of Apple, didn't care very much for the tactics of one of its biggest rivals, Google. CBSNews.com reports that in the upcoming biography titled simply Steve Jobs, Apple's CEO was furious that Google was developing the Android operating system for smartphones. Jobs felt that the OS ripped off a number of features from Apple's iPhone and iOS operating system.

In an interview for the biography conducted in January 2010, Jobs told its author Walter Isaacson, "I will spend my last dying breath if I need to, and I will spend every penny of Apple's $40 billion in the bank, to right this wrong. I'm going to destroy Android, because it's a stolen product. I'm willing to go thermonuclear war on this."

Jobs said that in a meeting with now former Google CEO Eric Schmidt, Jobs told Schmidt, "I don't want your money. If you offer me $5 billion, I won't want it. I've got plenty of money. I want you to stop using our ideas in Android, that's all I want." Apple has filed lawsuits against Android smartphone makers HTC and Samsung, claiming that they have violated Apple's patents in relation to the iPhone and iOS platform. Those lawsuit battles are still continuing today.

Isaacson's biography of Jobs is officially due to be released on Monday but might already be available in some book stores. It has become one of the more highly anticipated book releases of the year, thanks in part to the passing of Jobs early this month at the age of 56.

Someone needs to take Steve Jobs and his coffin and shoot it off into space towards a "Black Hole. This way the evil will be confined and would never escape.

Android is a capable OS, features are present but you need the know how to use them effectively, the average 24/7 texting teenager cannot use android effectively.

iOS on the other hand is meant for the average 24/7 texting teenager as you are living in a walled garden with nothing much to do but download fart apps and tell Siri weird things.

I am not anti-iOS; infact I do quite like its speed and smoothness. I am just stating an opinion.

Android is the future while apple's junk is not. Steve's legacy of trying to destroy Android failed miserably, because he caused it not android, if anything, it made android far better. Being cheap does not mean the product isin't very good. In fact, sometimes a cheaper product can outdoo a pricy product. Apple claims this and this and this but in all rights, apple itself has been doing this crap for too long.

apple thinks everyone steals from them,oh yea did you know they own having an idea? so everything you think technically belongs to them.LOL its called ithink LOL

I honestly think Google/Android fanboys are far more irritating than Apple/iOS fanboys now, it really has reached that point LOL.

I'm not a fan of either party in this, but I would say that Google certainly did some shady things by working on a competing product (Android) while being on Apple's board. I'm not a Steve Jobs fan by any means, but I'd be upset if someone did that to me too. And then Google buddied up with Mozilla and got all of their ideas and everything and then released Chrome.

Honestly, I don't think there's a company in tech that you can trust less than Google. If they wanted to be my "friend", I'd be very concerned. They're like spies...

RIM is not doing so well right now but look at the things apple copied from RIM? Not to mention the new iMessage was blatantly stolen from him. Having said that. EVERYONE copies from EVERYONE its just how it is. But for Apple to say they "reinvent things" its just plain stupid. They steal their ideas. The only idea which i thought was most original from them was the iPod. Either then that they did not reinvent **** all!

WOW, alot of Android hate in this news.

I like it. Seems some iOS users are getting nervous that their product is starting to be inferior.

Who in their right mind can say that Apple copied ANYTHING from android? iOS was already at work with v3 when Android debuted with it's completely useless 1.1 version on the G1. Before Donut in 2009 sept. there were no big record sales either.

Everyone plays catching up and everyone takes features and ideas from the competitors, that's not the problem. The problem is that Android itself was and is a compilation of features and design elements of other mobile OS's and they just began to develop some style and character for themselves with ICS - this too could be overlooked cause i don't think anyone should care that Google can't develop a nice and unique UI or cannot present original ideas anymore (G+, anyone?), but they have the bravery to give an interview like that idiot Duarte gave the other day - i'd rather shut my piehole if all i can do as a lead software designer is copying things BADLY from competitors'.

What else could he say? - "God, I love my competitors" ...

However, when Jobs says Google has stolen ideas from them, he doesn't mean that Google's specialists reverse-engineered and improved upon Apple's success...no.

What he refers to is the time when Eric Schmidt served on the board of Apple's directors before Google started Android's development with a promise that Google won't collide with Apple's products.

It's this insider info, Apple's strategy that Schmidt was transferring to Google that Jobs wrote so vehemently about.

Too many people are going to ignore this comment because of the truth.

Competition competition competition. From a consumer viewpoint I hope the smartphone marketshare battle never ends. I may prefer Android but if iOS and WP7 keep innovating then that'll only force Android to as well.

Yeah that was kind of obvious from the kind of things he said about Google and Android. He had "special" hatred for Google because they entered the phone market. As if the phone market exclusively belonged to Apple and MS. And it was visible in what he used to say.

the phone market was exclusively to Nokia and in lesser form Motorola and MS.
Apple jumped the cell phone market, then Google did too. even now Nokia still is the biggest competitor on absolute phone sales, beating both Google and Apple together.

Everyone with half a brain should think different about Google's "Do no evil", screw that. They sell all the info they have on someone to a company that pays for it. This big brother/hitler controlled world should noone want.
Both MS and Apple do not do any of this. They both dont give a sh*t what you do.
Hip hip hooray for Steve for wanting to take down Google =D

I'm glad he didn't destroy Android though, only because I believe competition is good in business as it keeps costs down and new technologies moving fast.

Except when patent lawsuits start flying fast and furiously, which causes costs to go up, to pay for the cost of the litigation and settlements, and innovation slows to a crawl, due to the chilling effect of software patents.

You can like or dislike Apple products, I personally dislike them, but it is unquestionable that the iPhone changed the way people interact with their phones.
Please note that this does not mean they invented the technology but simply that Apple made it successfully.

Xerox PARC revolutionized the way we interact with computers creating the first GUI but were Apple Lisa and Macintosh, Atari and Commodore that made the concept a commercially success.

This is a common untrue statement being made by a lot of Apple fans. Smartphones did exist before the iPhone, Apple didn't invent anything. Of course the first smartphones didn't offer as much functionality or great UI experience as the current ones but it's plain wrong to say: Without Apple, we wouldn't have Android or WP7 devices now.

In fact, Google stated already a few times that during the development of Android, they actually avoided looking at what competitors did and instead concentrated their work on what they though, would make a great smartphone OS.

If you compare now the new features of iOS5 to Android 1.x, 2.x or 3.x, then you begin to understand, who is actually stealing from who:

Notification Bar
Lockscreen information
Twitter integration
Tabbed web browsing
Photoediting
Split keyboard
HDMI Connector
Wireless syncing

to name just a few...

Exactly... I have smartphone devices that pre date the iPhone that do most of what the iPhone does now... but it's slow, clunky and no-one made apps for it.

You missed the point. He didn't say they invented them, he said they made a product that changed the smartphone market. If it wasn't for the iPhone smartphones would probably still be created for business use and hobbyists.

Same thing happened when Apple changed the PC market from a business machine to something people might actually want to use.

i guess you dont get what Android copied from Apple do you? Just search for screenshots of android before Apple released the iPhone in 2007 and you will get my point! Many people even think that android was born in 2008! they don't even know that Google purchased android to use on phones which looked a lot like nokia's OS and after the iPhones debut in 2007 they changed direction completely copying iOS without mercy! DID you even get phones with a multi touch screen before the iPhone? NO. All you got was Palm and Widnwos Mobiles devices that you could only use with a Pen/Stylus. NOT even with your finger but with your nails!

Notification Bar was there on iOS long ago on jailbroken devices, actually Apple hired the guy responsible for that app and brought it officially to iOS

Lockscreen information was there is Windows Phone, and palm devices. so we could easily argue Android stealing from them and not apple from android. apple kept this out for the sake of simplicity. and the way it is done now you only see info/notifications you want to see. not widgets like android or windows mobile used to allow you to see in the lock screen!

Twitter integration? twitter integration or facebook integration is not stealing an idea its simply integrating a popular social network into the OS. if they come to an agreement that it is. BTW this existed in Jailbroken iOS devices since day one! search for qTweeter Cydia, so you might argue android stealing the idea from them!!!

tabbed browsing is only in iPad not the iPhone small screen. dont think its smart arguing who copied who in the tablet arena is it? same fro Split keyboard, its on the iPad only

so you are arguing that android invented photo editing? pathetic!

HDMI connector? really what are you going to say that anyone who used usb on phones stole the idea from android? its a standard connector FFS that what anyone would use to give you video out.

wifeless syncing? was there since the good old RIP Widnows Mobile days! but none used it coz USB is always faster than a wireless connection!

Most of the features was not part of iOS but was available as an APP before Android had them. To be honest, Android and iOS copied most of the features that you listed from small developers.

HDMI connector, split keyboard, wireless syncing, photo editing, tabbed web browsing, twitter integration, lock screen information. NONE of those can be attributed to "stealing from Android" as Android wasn't the first to have ANY of them... but I'll give you the notification bar.

Lots of people have taken ideas from Apple... elastic scrolling, kinetic scrolling, multi-touch gestures such as pinch and zoom.

Google Android didnt change the mobile market as much as Apple did.
Google didnt change the laptop/desktop market as much as Apple did.
Dont forgot Apple is an ancient software/hardware company. Its been around from the early days and even tho Apple and MS been competitors since day one, they also been friends since day one.
How come both Apple and MS are no friends with Google?
MS and Apple compete eachother ALLOT more then each compete against Google(in any market)

FloatingFatMan said,

I see a difference between legally approved patent rights and Google's bare-faced licence offenses. I don't say that software patents are good things but currently are in use... so Apple stayed inside the boundaries of actual law while Google didn't, and I think this makes a big f_cking difference.

And of course no sane man with working eyes can deny that Android IS a Frankenstein of UI elements taken from other mobile OSes - the resemblence to iOS and recently WP is simply unambiguous.

The jobs you love is a little hypocrite if you watch the video.

Btw, what are they license offenses that google has done to apple? Can you tell us what they are? 'coz I have never heard of apple suing google over those offenses.

He could spend that 40 billion developing Apple Maps instead of Using Google Maps for iPhone. at least Microsoft uses Bing which is belong to them. how about that?

Waiting for the moment Apple announces it's goal to trademark the concept of ideas.
Original ideas at least, you know, so no one else can beat 'em to it.

all i said that android's only selling point is the cheap device thingie... Droid and SGS2 successes are a fact but easily overshadowed by any iphone sales

there's no contradiction: if wp devices start to compete in the same price range as low price androids then Googles advantage will melt down pretty fast - especially if you think about online services; the future is in online content linked to your platform and Google is waaay behind Apple and Microsoft in this aspect

my prediction of androids downfall is based on the mechanism of current oem business strategies - there's no future in a platform so fragmented; we know this by looking at the example of symbian; android is not the de facto BEST choice but the ONLY choice to anyone who wants a piece of the smartphone feeling for low price; as soon as wp minimum spec hardware drops to the mid range price range this exclusivity gonna fade away

as for the expensive android devices: i'm pretty sure almost every customer who bought an SGS2 or Droid and so on are well informed ones and made a conscious choice - these guys bought android cause they WANTED it; for the rest of the android market share this just ain't de facto true

Drivers? Never been a problem on Android, it's MSC, just plug and play. Not like you need iTunes (absolute ****) or Zune. The beauty of Android is choice - hardware, and manufacturer.

And for ****'s sake, there is a free iPhone. Apple can't say they don't compete in the low-end market, it's a free phone!

I'm not talking about drivers for PC sync but drivers for the phone hardware. That's why you get different performance results from phones wich basically got the same hardware and OS but made by a different OEM. That's why a Blade can run Angry Birds almost smooth but few more powerful devices are laggy.

And really mate, you compare iOS software fragmentation to Android? Yeah, it's like comparing a pacific rim crapwagon to a Bentley cause both can be described by having 4 wheels and some pedals.

Morons can't seem to understand this idea. They like to say oh Android has the cheap priced phones that's why they are successful. Why is it I only saw the Evo 4G in peoples hands if they were a Sprint customer in 2010? I rarely saw anything else for Sprint. On VZW, I saw people having the Droid, Droid X, Droid Incredible, Samsung Galaxy (I forget the Verizon name for that one)?

I am not saying people don't buy low-end phones too but high-end phones sell. Otherwise why is Verizon selling them? Further more why is VZW pricing the 4G LTE ones at $299 lately? Do they want them to sell? Of course, they know people will pay for the 4G service, especially since most Verizon Wireless customers are grandfathered in for unlimited data.

It all depends on the consumer, and honestly as much as I like my android, I would not ridicule Apple... but only hope they make their devices even better. If we have competition, it creates innovation. I have used both an iphone and am currently using an android phone. I much prefer my android phone. The only thing I preferred about my iphone was how brilliant they were to optimize the OS to satisfy the battery.

Do keep in mind though that the 3GS became free only after the announcement of the 4S so it's still too early to take that in regard when talking about market shares. Anyways when considering global market shares the 3GS is only free in US and for people who don't mind getting it on a contract basis.
