Surface firmware updates rolling out today to several devices

As part of Microsoft's Patch Tuesday for August 2014, the company released a number of firmware updates for its range of Surface devices. The devices that saw updates arrive were the Surface RT, Surface Pro and the newly released Surface Pro 3. There were no updates released for either the Surface 2 or the Surface Pro 2 this month.

The details for each update are below:

Surface RT:

  • Surface RT UEFI (v3.31.500) enhances overall system stability.

Surface Pro:

  • Wireless Network Controller and Bluetooth (v14.69.24054.176) improves network connection stability and enables functionality on WiFi networks using a hidden SSID.

Surface Pro 3:

  • Surface Pro Embedded Controller Firmware (v38.4.50.0) improved support for Surface Power Cover.
  • Surface Pro System Aggregator Firmware (v3.9.250.0) improved support for Surface Power Cover and enhances overall system stability.
  • Microsoft LifeCam Front (v5.20.1034.0) significantly improves power consumption during video chat such as Skype, supports Flash camera streaming in Internet Explorer, and improves overall functionality and stability.
  • Surface Ethernet Adapter (v8.14.0704.2014) improved support for the gigabit Surface Ethernet Adapter.

If you haven't done so already, you can manually have Windows Update check to see if the downloads are available on your device by searching 'Windows Update' and walking through the on-screen settings.

August 25th and I have still not seen the firmware update on my Surface RT. Weird. I hope it doesn't require 8.1 for some reason, but I have not seen any indication of such a requirement on the Microsoft site.

hmm never had an issue before but I've had several random crashes after todays updates on my surface pro 2, anyone else?

Updated my original Surface Pro and everything seems good here. Though I didn't really experience any slowdown or other problems before the update. But nonetheless, keep em comin! :)

Im waiting on a threshold beta update for the surface. Want to see them merge RT and windows phone OS together for a better experience.

The update for the Surface RT is much appreciated. The device certainly has a few issues (that Microsoft seems to be addressing), but it's a great experience for web browsing and watching TV. The browser is very capable, better than the ones on Android and iOS I'd say.

Agreed about the Surface RT. Not sure if it's a coincidence, but it does seem a bit faster with the August Update and new firmware.

Yep, it's not just you. The new firmware has sped up things by a bit - maybe it's an updated IE11 engine, but operations on the desktop do seem improved.
