Tablet market grew 45.1% in Q3 2010

IDC has released its results for the 3rd quarter of 2010 showing that the tablet market grew 45.1% which was largely due thanks to the Apple iPad. This is because of it's high demand which managed to take out 87.4% or 4.2 Million units of the worldwide market. The popularity of the market also shows that not only tablets being shipped is on the rise but also ereaders which was up 40% or 2.7 Million units shipped in the 3Q.

"The media tablet market's rapid evolution will continue to accelerate in 4Q10 and beyond with new product and service introductions, channel expansion, price competition and experimentation with new use cases among consumers and enterprises," said Susan Kevorkian, research director, Mobile Connected Devices.

IDC expects that the tablet market will finish off the year shipping 17 Million and 10.8 Million ereader units, and that the market will be more then double in size at the end of 2011 to 44.6 Million tablets shipped whilst ereaders will grow to 14.7 Million. Further market predictions can be found on the IDC website.

damn and ms still has nothing to offer

not to get technical, but MS has offered Tablets since 2001... which it doesn't even seem like those are included in this number

Unless they are including Convertble Laptops as tablets, im not suprised.

The number of tablet % was almost nothing, alot of the tablets i knew about were just wireless displays to a desktop.

14.7 units is really not alot. Considering the amount of Notebook/Desktops sold. I think that number is about 320 million.

Don't worry, the tablet market will eventually kill the Desktop market, which was supose to be killed by the netbook market, and how the console market was killing the pc gaming market, but yet console gaming is dieing out infavor of phone gaming..... err yeah, I love tech new anymore... just a bunch of this is gona kill this soon! bs

In terms of CPU/GPU power it's highly unlikely the desktop market will just die one morning. I can't lie without my 4Ghz, 8GB RAM, DirectX 11 desktop - sorry - anything else seriously irritates me in terms of speed. The mobile gadgets market on the other hands is in utter fragmentation and it's getting worse.

The tablet market hasn't really even started to get off it's feet yet. You'll see a lot bigger jumps this year and next for tablets.

Specially when Apple release the iPad 2.

Tablet boom will die in a year just like the netbook boom.

I read neowin once a day, but no matter what the post is about you're in the comments somewhere talking about the iPad 2. Why are you so excited about it?

the same was said about netbook...

They are two separate products. Saying that Tablets will die because netbooks died off does not make any sense.
