Talk to your friends on Facebook from Windows Live Messenger

Earlier today you may have heard about Windows Live Essentials beta 2 being released. With this update, Windows Live Messenger received a new feature which people have been craving for a while: the ability to chat with Facebook friends. This has been expected as in the previous beta there was some Facebook integration mostly having to do with status updates, but it did show contacts as well. The messenger also has connectivity with many other social networks truly making this your social hub.

AOL has had the ability to chat with Facebook friends via their AIM client since the beta days of AIM 7, as well as support status updates via AOL Lifestream. Since Windows 7 isn't going to see any major upgrades for a while, Microsoft has been hard at work on their Windows Live set of applications, so it only makes sense that they would try to match and beat the functionality of AOL's client. Microsoft's focus has been on creating the most seamless social experience for their users by integrating many services into their Windows Live products.

Directly from Windows Live Photo Gallery you can upload to Facebook, YouTube, and Flickr, as well as the company's own SkyDrive. Then from Windows Live Messenger you can chat with all your friends on Facebook without needing to visit the site. The interface works the same as a regular instant message, so this will feel right at home. Do note however that Microsoft has not enabled Facebook chat for everyone just yet, it currently stands at only the United States, United Kingdom, France, Germany, Russia, and Brazil.

Windows Live Messenger also allows you to view status updates on Facebook and MySpace all from the main window, although for some that has still been buggy.

A note on how to set up Facebook chat: If you have already connected Facebook to WLM, you will have to click on the Facebook icon on your contact list to edit the connection, and then make sure you place a check by the chat option. Click Connect with Facebook and it should update your contact list momentarily. See picture above for more assistance.

I read the comments... wow. No one calls my by my first name. Always Nashy.

So now my Live thinks my name is Nashy .

FU MS.

This thing sucks the hard one. How do I change my display name without changing my Live name?

Can I make the chat windows look like... chat windows, instead of a massive box of white.

I don't get why some people are annoyed by the fact that the nickname feature was removed. I'm thankful that I will no longer see those silly long nicknames/quotes with emoticons. Yeah, it's about customization .. but isn't it what the share box is for?
Privacy? if you're worry b/c you don't want your contact to know your full name ... hmm.. then why do you have them as your contacts in the first place?

LESSON 101 - Facebook. This is sort of off the subject about Windows Live , but has to do with Facebook contacts in your contact list and messenger. I have read a lot of complaints about people claiming that there Fan Pages are listed in their contacts. There is a reason for this. The Fan Page that you added IS NOT AN OFFICIAL FAN PAGE. a official fan page is when you go to a page on Facebook and the option to select "LIKE" is there. When you select "LIKE", Facebook adds the page as a FAN PAGE and NOT AS A CONTACT. If you visit a page that is unofficial fan page and the option to ADD A FRIEND is there, Facebook is going to add that page as a CONTACT. That is why you are seeing so called FAN PAGES in your Windows Live Contacts and Messenger because THEY ARE NOT OFFICAIL FACEBOOK FAN PAGES,and ARE FACEBOOK FRIEND PAGES. You cannot expect Windows Live Conctacts to sort out UNOFFICIAL FAN PAGES from your real facebook contatcts. OFFICIAL FAN PAGES allow the artist to have unlimited fans. Unofficial Fan Pages (Friends) only allows you up to 5,000. Major difference.

OK, just noticed this is available just for some countries. I guess I have to actually read the news before commenting it xD.

eww 2 (cant edit first post). It added all my facebook friends to my contact list in Windows Live.

Why do you have friends on Facebook that you don't want to talk to/see? Yet you confirmed their friend request?

It added all my facebook friends, groups, and any "Likes" to my Windows Live contact list (hotmail & desktop windows live mail) I just wanted them on messenger to chat not mix with everything else. You cant even delete them from the desktop windows live mail program, hotmail yes.

eww, it shows the groups i joined and stuff I "like" in the friends list. Ill see if there is an option to fix this or ill stick with pidign for facebook chat.

ICQ 7 have those FB chat integration and social network integration for long time ago....

i wont update to the new WLM unless they bring back the nicknames and have only one messenger process instead of 2 that the current wlm got.

Well it looks like you are going to stay on Windows Live Messenger for Wave 3 until it's end of time.

Just installed it now! I must say its running very smoothly indeed. Works really well with facebook chat!

Only thing I find annoying is they have removed the ability to hide off-line contacts, instead I just have them all in a group!

My offline Facebook folks don't show up (those that are *away* are shown as away, which is also the case with WLM) at all.

So when will we be able to interact with all IM"s like trillion? Didnt' aol put a dart in that whole concept years ago?

They're unlikely to make WLM to connect to ALL the IM networks. There are plenty of wares out there that can do that already anyway, and with fewer adverts.

Trillian has too many *other* compromises to suit me (that is, however, true of most multi-service IM clients, even those for Linux). One-service (or, at most two-service) IM clients don't get overly busy or force you to be the long-tailed cat in a sunroom full of rocking-chairs in southern Florida at high noon.

They are only connecting it to the most used ones (A.K.A Facebook). If it had them all, then WLM would be bloated.

I wonder if it will function properly if your Facebook login and your Microsoft Passport are different. Does it allow you to sign into an alternate account?

Yeah, my facebook and live use different emails. But works fine.

Yes, the two can be wildly different (also, you can use an existing FB account for chat).

I much rather keep using the Trillian 5 beta, it has Twitter support and all around better features. I really wish WLM supported half the stuff Trillian does. The only thing i like more about WLM is the large Display Pictures that Trillian doesn't seem to have, or that I can't find?

Trillian reminds me of the *jill-of-all-trades/mistress-of-none* sort of IM client, which I loathe. When you start going beyond three services on an IM client, you wind up with a hodgepodge (such as Trillian, or even pidgin) which will invariably make compromises. (AIM has that same sort of issue, which is why I don't use the service in Windows at all, because the native client is even worse, and busier, than pidgin.) Twitter? Don't use the service except in extremis (more of my friends that I keep in touch with on a daily basis have either both Facebook and Twitter accounts or only Facebook, especially those that have mobile phones or other mobile devices).

So I'm wondering, since it's considerably easier to hack your FB account, how much control would somebody have over your hotmail account, which in most cases its the deffault for FB and your main account (I have an email just for FB but I had skip the integration between WLM and FB beacuse of that concern)...I know it may sound pretty paranoiac but hey like I said just wondering.

Actually, it's only the default for WLM if you don't have another account you want to use (such as Passport, Live, or Hotmail) and it's never been the default for Facebook. My WLM and Hotmail accounts are separate, and my FB account is completely different from both. If you have an *existing* Facebook account, simply use that (which I do). All Facebook requires is an e-mail address (which can be any of several, including Hotmail); however, they do use e-mail address verification (which is why passport.com and live.com are nonstarters, as neither actually attaches to an e-mail server), which makes them no different from *Neowin*.

Nope, still not there. (can't be the cache if the option's not there in both the embedded IE popup and Chrome)

Don't see that option yet for me.

nice... I thought I was the only one with the glitch

Tried everything from reconnecting messenger to facebook, messing with options, clearing cache, multiple browsers etc...

I dunno if it has to do to the fact that I live in Canada and we receive everything so late.

Nope it's not, you have to enable it.

Do you also use Windows XP still?

Lol Facebook was available on AIM ages ago. I don't even use the official AIM app, but it amuses me to see WLM playing catchup like this, again.

But AIM just does not offer and have near as many users as WLM.

It was available on WLM also via Messenger Discovery.

Yes but AIM implementation of it sucks. If you link it with your AIM it throws in all these categories and they contacts don't combine with those who are already in your Buddy List. Also, if you're on Facebook while chatting with someone in AIM you still get the chat windows on the site which is highly annoying, especially when you aren't even using them.

WLM implement was completely smooth and if you go to your Live Contacts there is an option to find and combine possible duplicates and it's immediately reflected in messenger. It successfully connect most of my Facebook with my existing contacts, just missed a few that misspelled names, or missing last names.

Also, unlike AIM's implementation (which I've seen, but didn't use), it takes up no more space in WLM (multiple Facebook chats show up as tabs in a common screen; the AIM implementation uses multiple and separate windows). In fact, WLM's implementation of tabbed chats reminds me of the old (and dead) Yahoo Messenger for Vista (which had the same feature). And to treemonster, you don't have to use Facebook Chat (or the MySpace chat feature), as it's an option. Also, because it's completely separate, you can actually chat while gaming in *any* Facebook game (some games are notorious for nuking the native Facebook chat tab in a browser, such as most of Zynga's games). I may actually recommend this for those like me that game via FB and have large chat lists.

I'm using this now! It's great. It even shows notifications when friends sign into Facebook Chat just like Messenger friends. Lovin this.

How do you make your own nickname on WLM now? It's like your first + last name. I like the personalized display name

That feature is removed

JSYOUNG571 said,

Thank God!

It absolutely sucks they removed it, and it is a really, REALLY bad marketing decision. This might be what kills Messenger if they are forcing people to update.

Exactly! I downgraded back because it didnt include that. They did really mess up by doing that, I wish they put it back, or maybe MSGPlus could release some sort of patch which fixes it

Not at all, you have your personal message for all the rubbish you could want to put in your name.

Loads of people use Facebook chat and you have to use your real name on that.

They could of made an option to choose which one

It's fine because people get the choice. On Facebook everyone knows your real name is everywhere. Many people won't like that with a new version of Messenger they install suddenly their real name is everywhere without any notification in advance. It's just not messenger anymore.

If you lose your connection to Messenger, something weird happens. The old style nicknames appear for your friends. The client is still more than capable of displaying the old nicknames but it intentionally hides the ability to see nicknames while you're connected.

This could be something added into Messenger Plus (hopefully).

Then don't add people you DON'T know. Common sense.

That's only for people using Wave 4. There is no option to change a custom name for Wave 4. So once lots get it, you can't see the custom na,es.

Alright, How about EVERYONE on NEOWIN reveal your REAL Names NOW!!!!!

All this big talk, and still everyone on neowin uses a pseudonyms/nicknames.
Neowin should force everyone to link to their fb account.
take all of our anonymity away without asking us.

it appears that anyone who likes facebook, understands they have no privacy.
I wish the rest of still had the option to pretend.
Good thing I have a fake name on facebook too.

Mike Bishop....

There ya go

but no seriously i like the fact nicknames have gone but i can understand it is not for everyone the old 'internet handle' thing is older than the internet itself... can you imagine the matrix with them all using their real names hahaha

If you subscribe to Facebook *prior* to Neowin (as in logging on with Facebook), it shows your real name (this is standard when you use Facebook logins). If I log into a site that allows the use of FB logins (and yes, that includes Neowin) with the same information, thhen my real name shows up. The reason that is *not* the case on Neowin (for me) today is due to my Neowin login predating my FB account (by several years).
