Teen racks up 14,528 texts in one month

In California a 13 year old girl was able to rack up an astounding 14,528 text messages in one month. For those keeping track that's 484 a day which breaks down to 20 an hour or 1 every three minutes, for the entire month!

When asked, Reina Hardesty's replied that "I just like to talk", which is ironic because she was texting and not actually talking. Her parents were at least wise enough that they did sign her up for unlimited texting but if they had not her bill would have amounted to $2,811. For more information about the cost of text messaging to the carrier you can read this article as previously reported on Neowin.

Her parents have responded to the outrageous amount of texting by limiting her use of the cell phone in which she responded, "lke omg ur so mean."

I don't understand why this is news.... 14k txt aren't that many for a teen girl... especially if you consider how the cell phone providers count txt messages... That 14k messages probably included both incoming and outgoing... so let's say she really only sent at most 7K, one every 6 minutes. If she is like my daughter.... she probably has numerous friends texting her, some of which she responds to, some of which she doesnt.... overall, my daughters txts probably are 5:1 outgoing vs. incoming.... So if my daughter sent 14k txts msgs, she really "sent" ~2300 and received the rest.... Having said that... thank goodness for unlimited texting.... Also, for a while my daughter was averaging a phone replacement every 3 or 4 months... thank goodness for warranty replacement....

doesn't she have school, or a job? obviously if shes texting that much she doesnt have time for either... good job parents!

I don't even remember when I had sent my last SMS... it's so outdated technology...

Yeah that is so 1999.

I´m all for holographic messages now, I use them everyday.

Lol, I use about 3-400 a month..Couldn't really use much more...I hate it when people send useless texts like, what are you doing? Im shopping etc etc.

The best one I saw was the one her dad said when she was attending a birthday party, she was texting her friend
sitting RIGHT NEXT TO HER!

No one has mentioned this here... but a sms is 160 char long.... when you are writing nowdays, you can write one long sms and it gets charged based on dividing the text by 160 char.

Thus she might write long messages that seem to BLOW out the real amount of messages she sends....

cell phone text messages for me a month? psh 1 maybe... AIM/MSN/ Other client on a computer text messages tons a day... I hate cell phones... I sware I have to be the only one that does anymore

Yeah I second this. The only time I text is if im bored in a meeting. Or if I know the person im trying to get a hold of is in a meeting.

I really wish there was a way to deliberately go to voice mail and not make the person's phone ring.

This is news? I know a girl that's sent over 14,000 before and sends over 10,000 on a regular basis. I figured it's pretty common-place with teens these days... *shrug*

Parents like to be able to interrupt their children when on social occasions outside the family home.

As for the texts, what are they doing in class @_@

There are children who get into 1st grade these days with a phone and in a few grades they're talking and texting all the time. How do I know? My 9 year old sister tells me sometimes.

Is it a Guinness World record?

She'd make a killer short-hand typist. Look out secretaries of today, TXT'ing is coming your way!

Sheesh! I prefer calling any day! To be fair, all my friends are on skype, so it is completely free. And for my mobile I get 1200 anytime minutes plus weekend unlimited. I get 1000 texts every month out of which I use around 100.

hahahahahahahahahahahahahhaa - extended laugh too..how man of ................. and hahahahaha would I need to rack up 14528 texts? Hmmmmmmm...........................................................lol

How is this worth a news article? My girlfriend did 21k last month, I did 19k and I've used 16,688 so far this month and the bill cycle isn't over yet. I mean sure I'm not 14 I'm 19 but none the less the younger ones should text more than older people. So why is this even an article worth anyones time?

how the hell do you even manage 21k of texts.. or for that matter 16k..

What do you achually say? Do you sent "A/S/L" to random numbers...

You should really post your case as a news to cover this, let's see whether your post gets more replies than this one does.

that somebody could well be charged as second-degree murder once that spoiled brat died being in an "inhabitable environment"... haha

me personally if you got a fricking PHONE , USE IT what it's MADE for! (nowadays it seems like kids use the phone for everything but it's original purpose LOL)

cause texting can be good at times if you just want to say something quick (or even a couple replies or something along those lines) to a person and dont really need to call them, but if your going to talk THAT MUCH you would be better off just calling them and actually TALKING. lol

and me personally i think 'texting' is best on IM programs like MSN/Yahoo/AIM on a real PC and not a fricking phone. lol

I wont be surprised that someone would end up trying to send 14k MMS just to break this record... or to a lesser extent, to take 14k different photos in a month with the cellphone.

Yeah, I text about 5k and thought that was ridiculous. This is absurd, and the dude who is saying 36k is completely crazy. Lol. Phone calls work, but you can't call your friends for every little funny thing or thought. Text on the other hand is a very nice way to keep everyone chattering I tihnk.

Is this really getting that much attention? Thats not much by any means where I live..
Myself (18 ) Do around 12k a month while still in highschool.. My sister who's 15 easily beats that by doing around 15-20k a month.
My friend Kylie supposedly has reachde 36k. And it's Highly believeable if youve ever seen her text.

she doesnt need to be the one with the most texts in a month to be extreme. 3-4k per month means she could go crazy if you take away her phone for a week.

I'm confused.

Her parents were at least wise enough that they did sign her up for unlimited texting.

So if she sent 2 texts a month of 20,000 it didnt cost them anything...
Her parents have responded to the outrageous amount of texting by limiting her use of the cell phone.

So they just limited her use of the cell phone because she sends too many texts?
Would they rather she go out taking drugs, drinking alcohol and/or getting pregnant? Seriously. Priorities?

How do you limit someones use of a cell phone anyway? "You can only have it from 3pm to 8pm, the rest of the time we lock it in a safe!". Kinda defeats the purpose.

How is she going to find out where to drink, get high, and get rogered by the football team if she can't text?

Also: do you really that's the alternative? "Well, I can't send a text message so I guess I'll just pound a shot and **** a hobo instead."

Yes, that's pretty reasonable. "no cell-phone during school hours" or maybe "If your next bill says your spending every waking minute messing with your phone then we'll stop paying for it.". You can also call your carrier and have them limit who you can receive or send calls to/from.

Hilarious, thanks. What on earth RobertH was thinking I don't know.

Text or shoot up. Yes, that is the main choice afflicting all young people these days.

I know a guy that has a friend, that had a mail man that had a cousin whose mum used to send 20,000 a day!

No really, why do storys like these suddenly attract posts with "WELL I LIKE DO XX MORE!!"

I know because I repair his computers, I fix his active sync when it acts up, I set up his phone to do the messaging.

eh, my best friend used to text about 20,000 text messages every month. lol. so, while this is insanely way too much already, I've seen worse.

Although it does sound extreme. It's not really all that crazy. Sure it is a lot but considering her age. How many friends do the average teen/preteen have? How many have phones now and send text's? I myself only really text a few people (usually around 3-4) in a month but not all the time and still end up with around 3000-5000. I'm not a teen and I'm not usuing it for work either. The bulk of my messages are done in the evening/night and just a lot easier to send a text than to have to sit on a phone talking. It eliminates the wasted time sitting with a phone to the ear and nothing being said sometimes and makes it so you can actually still do things while talking and not lose total focus on what you're doing. I have a lot of friends too online that I just prefer to talk to online. I could easily average 10,000+ messages a month of I wanted to bug these people while on the road or away from the computer. I don't exactly have unlimited texts too. I get 2500 with my plan plus I have My10 with unlimited to any 10 numbers in Canada. Since all the people I text are in My10, I usually only use a couple hundred from the 2500.

I think I'd rather have my child texting than using the phone. I would still like the option of regulating and as far as I know. There are options for parents to do that. Correct me if I'm wrong. If there aren't, we need to set something up.

And the bigger issue here is grammer too. I have a lot bigger issue with grammer than the actually amount of talking that's going on.

"grammar" (in both American and British English).

Humans communicate faster by voice than hand motions (typed, texted, or sign language). Whether people know when to end conversations is an entirely different story.

I thought neowin was meant to be unprofessional journalism... which means grammar/"grammer" isn't really that important, as long as it makes much sense.

Didn't anyone find that "cartoon" offensive?

My mother just got a LG Rumour with a slideout keyboard for texting.

So, you guys see nothing wrong with beating children? How mature hitting someone who can't defend themselves. No wonder America is so screwed up. You do know that in the long run that sort of abuse never actually works. Only lazy parents beat their kids instead of using proper discipline. And only a disturbed mind would also see any humor at all in showing it. Places that have corporal punishment also have a higher incidence of abuse of the elderly as well. Payback.

P.S.

I'm not being "politically correct" either. Its far too easy to dismiss someone just by labeling them that. Child abuse is a real issue whether it be physical, verbal, or sexual. It is nothing to laugh at.....

It's a CARTOON. It is not intended to be real. Just like Tom and Jerry. They hit each other with hammers.

It's a stretch to suggest that's condoning such actions.

PS. I'm not American or in America, thanks.

Actually, back in the days when spanking was allowed and kids knew if they messed up that they were gonna get beat they tended to show a little bit more respect. Now the appropriate punishment is...almost...nothing. "Go to your room!" Yeah great, where they have a PC, TV, and video game systems to play with. Real punishment there. What exactly IS accepted discipline anymore? I've seen the papers from my local child enforcement office about what you CAN'T do to a kid....and reading it leaves you scratching your head and wondering exactly what you CAN do.

Funny how that article informing us of the little to no cost of sending text messages can magically run a bill this high. :P

In the UK it costs to send texts - about 10p ish I think depending what network.

That is unless you have "free" text

In the US is it free to send texts??

The most I text is roughly 6500 to 7000 messages a month. I thought that was a great deal of texting.
I have a HTC Fuze and I hope it can handle the abuse I give it.

For my standards (and most people´s for sure), that´s bordeline sick already, let alone the girl!

What do you use it for?

I think a great many of us just cannot understand what you could type in so many messages, so any clarification would be quite enlightening

I use it to mainly talk to my girlfriend and she text more than I do. Thats only 250 text a day. Not much.

"Not much"? That's more than one every four minutes of time awake. Don't you speak to her?

she'll be using her experiance later in life when she's texting that order for 'burger and fries' to the cook....bnfhtl (burger and fries hold the lettuce)

"lke omg ur so mean."

Maybe if she spent more time paying attention in class and less time obsessed with her phone she would have at least Kindergarten level English.

Give her land-line only for a month. She will be horrified to learn that she can survive. Her life might even improve!

Lol This is like a direct copy from the forum topic.

And that calculation on top looks quite a lot like the one I made in that topic...

Assuming she sleeps, that actually increases the amount of texts per hour, pushing it close to one text every two minutes.
I don't see how that's even possible, unless every message was about two or three characters. And what of the people she messaged - if her messages were replies, they should also have huuuge numbers of sent texts :)
How did no-one notice or do anything?

You bring up a good point. What model phone was she using and what state is it in now?

How about just pick up the phone and talk to someone? A 5 minute phone conversation could cover 100 txts no problem.

You can't do that and other things at the same time. Get with the 21st century.

PS If you want to hook up with young women (over 18 for me please), get yourself some SMS skillz.

+1 here, don't her fingers (especially her thumb) hurts?

I could hardly send 14k messages through msn in a month... how could she do it with SMS on her phone? (I bet her cellphone keypad is dirtier than my keyboard lol)
