Twitter celebrates six years with 340 million tweets a day

It's hard to imagine a world without Twitter. However, six years ago today the social networking service had just launched. On the occasion of the company's sixth anniversary, the company updated its blog with some more statistics showing just how many people use Twitter every day.

Many people didn't know what to make of Twitter at first. After all, how much could one express of oneself with messages of just 140 characters or less each? As it turned out, there was a much bigger audience for such a service than anyone could have imagined. Twitter's blog post today said:

And at last check, there are more than 140 million active users (there’s that number again) — and today we see 340 million Tweets a day. That’s more than 1 billion every 3 days.

Twitter CEO Dick Costolo said in September that the service had 100 million active daily users, which means that Twitter has expanded by at least another 40 million users in just six months. Costolo also said in October that the service generated 250 million "tweet" messages a day, again showing that the growth of Twitter continues to accelerate.

The company launched a new interface for both its web and mobile customers in December, which got mixed reviews at first but hasn't kept people from continuing to use the service.

Wow, can't believe it's been around six years. I remember thinking it was silly when it first came out. I still do, but it feels like it was only about two years ago. O_o I have no perception of time...
Oh well. Happy birthday, Twitter.

it was live for years before it 'went big' i would say it started to enter the mainstream about 2-3 years ago only i.e. when celebs started utilising it etc.

Mostly spam...

This.

It's such a trash bin of fart updates...

Facebook is much MUCH better and way more evolved.

Twitter's a joke...
It has its uses, but I wouldn't shed a tear over Facebook acquiring Twitter and getting rid of those double posts to both networks along the way...

In your opinion!

Like every service it has it's spam, but to say it's mostly spam is massively incorrect.

Facebook is not much better, and by more evolved you are directly comparing their features? they are 2 different services and should not be directly compared.. Twitter is a great product of what it is, as is Facebook.

For me personally, Twitter has more directed content, it feeds me what i want, whereas Facebook your almost forced to take notice of what everyone else is interested in, being invited to events i don't care about, invited to play games i don't like, shared images, videos etc that i really do not want to see... you can block apps, notifications and unfriend as many offenders as possible but it still seems to come through. I'm sick and tired of the complete idiocy that plagues the website.

At the moment there is a viral photo going around which is a photo of a notice from McDonalds stating they are no longer selling food to under 18s to tackle obesity.. but of course the facebook masses lap it up, believe it, share it and it's forced onto my timeline.

This content may be on twitter but it's not on my timeline AT ALL.. if i want to find it i need to search for it.

Try following different people. Friends tend to work well. Or people relevant to your interests.
