Update: Windows Live Essentials released

A few hours ago,we announced that Microsoft was preparing the Windows Live Essentials for release on Thursday.

From what I and many others understood, there was apparently a new build labeled as the "final version" released over at download.live.com. However this is not the case, hey it happens. We've just received confirmation that the "1202" builds are indeed the final build. The main reason that Steve announced this at CES is simply because the Windows Live Essentials suite is now available to every market, compared to being strictly US.

During the keynote, Steve Ballmer also announced that users will soon be able to add Facebook as one of many web activities on your Windows Live Profile. So when you post an image or update your status, your network on Windows Live will also know. And last but not least, Dell will be shipping most of their consumers PCs with the final version of Windows Live Essentials starting in February.

While we are on the topic of Windows Live, I have been invited to attend a private one on one meeting with Ryan Gavin, Senior Director, Windows Live Consumer Product Management OR Dharmesh Mehta, Director, Windows Live Consumer Product Management. I'm not exactly sure if the meeting is going to be strictly PR related or an interview style. With that said, if you have any questions for me to ask please post them and I'll try and get most if not all answered. I will be meeting with them on the 9th early in the morning so get your questions in!

wondering the same thing, i hate the net install and the whole live package its heavy and seriously dont need it.

Hello!

I've just installed the new version of Windows Live Mail Desktop using the web installer but it stays frozen in the "Windows Live Mail" welcome screen after the installation is done. Can somebody tell me how can I fix this problem? Thx n cheers!

Hm, I used the beta, and switched back to the previous version. For the main reason that sending files to others who set themselves offline didn't work, and sending pictures would enter some inconvenient photo-sharing mode. Anyone care to tell me if these have been "changed" or so? I'd be grateful, at least!

Has it really been released? I've been using RC and the web updates does not want to update the suite... like I've already have the latest version

Someone know what to do?
I use Windows 7 x64.

I don't understand...
Build "1202" is final release? and Windows Live Essentials final version when will be released? February?

Please reply! thanks.. Cheers

Windows Live Essentials is already final. This is the collection which comprises of different apps, all of which are on build 1202 and are therefore final.

Here are a few questions...
1. What is the status of Live Web Messenger? Is it still in development?
2. Windows Live Messenger's VOIP options are limited to a specific VOIP provider and does not support inbound voice calls. Are there any plans to expand WLM's VOIP capabilities? Many small businesses/individuals who are NOT using Office Communication Server or ResponsePoint could benefit from an integrated SIP client.
3. Will Live Mesh and Live Video Messages eventually become part of Live Essentials?
4. What new features are you planning in Wave 4 of Windows Live services?

I would love to know why Signature Sounds was removed, and why the sync feature of Windows Live Photo Gallery doesn't work (even after following their instructions step by step).

Because they were annoying. Some people in my contact list had inappropriate sounds and also with a louder audio. Good riddance. Personally I hope custom emotions also gets removed. First thing I disable on a fresh install.

Personally, I love custom emoticons. It opens up much more creativity and customisability and is one of the reasons why WLM is my favourite IM.

I thought signature sounds were the sounds YOU set to tag a certain user coming online etc, not some way for the contact to personalize their announcement on YOUR system. The latter would be lame and ripe for abuse, but the former would be VERY useful to, say for example, make sure you sorted active girlfriends of priority from past flames/friends.

Some of them may have been annoying, but you could mute each contact's signature sound if you found it annoying and it would sound the default.

Why remove an option many loved when it was an OPTION?

I've been told by an official private beta tester and Windows Live Butterfly that it was because the servers couldn't handle all the signature sounds. That, I understand. Not, "it was annoying" when you could easily turn it off!

You can still select certain sounds for any Messenger contact This was put in place once the original signature sounds was removed

Ask about changes coming to Windows Live Movie Maker, it is still in beta, and is no where near comparable to iMovie, or other video editing suits.

It's not even comparable to its former self. They've really butchered the crap out of it.

So they chose to ignore everything people complained about and released it anyway? Way to ignore your users, MS.

Those kind of remarks are why your feedback is ignored in the first place. If you were constructive about the matter you might get more attention.

MS can't take a little criticism and actually fix what people complain about? I wasn't the only one who complained about the default scenes looking horrible while maximized, the user icon being displayed on Windows 7, the Signature Sounds being removed, etc.

I do love what they have done with this release for the most part. I just feel they could have done better.

I'm sure things will be fixed in future releases. Well at least I hope they do.

The thing is that those things are personal preference as to how you want it. Microsoft have to deal with a huge consumer base. If 500000 people want those changes and 100 don't, they will go with a majority.

Indeed. I for one hated that signature sound. I don't want people to be able to choose any old sound they want and have it blurted out every time they log in. I know you could turn off the playback of sounds, but default was to play them. I'm glad they're gone.

Now, the images not being very scalable is something they should fix, I agree. As is the lack of a tray icon on Windows 7. Microsoft seem to have forgotten that many people like the "minimise to tray" function when you closed the app window and what they have essentially done is to remove that option.

Actually you can run WLM 2009 in vista capability mode - then you'll be able to minimize it to the tray (instead on having it occupy a taskbar button). But I have to say, I actually prefer the new way it's sitting on the taskbar.

The pixelation of the default scenes is not personal preference! It is a poor implementation of a feature me and many others were looking forward to. We now cannot use pictures for our scenes (even the default ones) as they are all pixelated.

Also the taosts bug hasn't been fixed. No matter what colour you or you contact have, the toast will show up as the default blue.

Co-sign with Ry. Signature Sounds were terribly confusing if you didn't know what they were.

I understand signature sounds, Zach, but why couldn't the Messenger team fix the toast bug and the pixelisation of scene images before rushing the release out?

Well, how could I get some contact to report bugs? It seems impossible to get in contact with a big developer like Microsoft..

Webcameras don't work in the new version (buttons for enabling webcameras just don't work). Video call works though, but it won't show your own camera (ie. you wouldn't even know if it is on).

I have described the bugs here: http://www.msghelp.net/showthread.php?tid=88191 but it seems pretty desperate to think it would be fixed..
