Verizon takes on iPhone with LG Voyager

Verizon today launched its most concerted effort yet to respond to the iPhone and to improve its music phone lineup with four new devices. The carrier began with its most ambitious device ever, the LG Voyager. Also known as the VX10000, the handset is one of LG's first touchscreen phones to target the US and includes a more iPhone-like interface based on that of the Prada phone; users can place calls, play AAC/MP3/WMA music, and take 2-megapixel photos almost exclusively from the screen.

However, the device is also one of the first LG touch models to offer a keyboard alternative: flipping open the device reveals a lengthwise QWERTY keyboard and a secondary screen for e-mail, text messaging, and games. It also supports V CAST TV for live digital TV viewing and stores as much as 8GB of media on a microSDHC card.

Great googly moogly! Have they no shame! That's such a blatant rip off of the iphone. I really don't understand why LG would do that, it's not like the iphone is a "sacred design", far from it .. but it's been done already.. it's now old hat.

It's an old hat taken from the LG Prada. ;)

LG claims that the iPhone design was taken from the Prada. Now everyone claims that LG is stealing iPhone's design?!

bold'ed, to attract attention of the people that might say that LG is ripping off the iPhone.

Yeah, never.

How come no one was able to make a better

Apple Pippin? (Of course, not the first game console but I'm sure it was "revolutionary")
AppleTV? (Of course, not the first of it's kind and not "revolutionary")
Mouse? (Say with more than one button? What a concept!)
Newton?
...

I'm sure some will like it, although I personally think the whole design is pretty damn awful.

Looks like a Remote Control/Digital Camera/PSP. I just want a small item that will let me listen to lots of music, be easy to use,and fit in my pocket nicely. IS THAT TOO MUCH TO ASK?!

I just wish one phone would allow me to upload MP3s and playlists (WinAMP, WMP, I dont care) I dont want to create playlists on the phone. Takes WAY too long. Is that too much to ask?

WinAMP, WMP, I don't care...you realize the iphone does just that, right? I'm sure there are a dozen of other phones too. iphone obviously requires itunes, but the only way to upload songs is through a playlist, which you sync to the phone. It's quite easy to make playlists and then upload them.

Yea, but I'm stuck on Verizon. The price for the iPhone, considering the abilities (iPod +Phone +Browser) really isnt that bad. Just more than I need AND I'm VERY unhappy about the battery issue. But thanks for the info

Right, but there are multiple phones that allow syncing of playlists from the PC as well, not just the iphone. I have no stock in apple, and couldn't care less if you get one or not. But I'm saying that there are multiple phones that do that, the iphone I happen to know uses itunes to do it. I don't know what some of the windows-based phones use, but I'm sure WMP would do it on a PDA phone.

What is it with LG - why are most of their phones so damn ugly? and if not ugly, then completely lacking in features?!

LTD is right - its like "Apple - Attack Of The Clones"

There are some damn ugly iPod rip-offs about too!!

this phone is to replace the enV, its form factor is very popular in the teen agers and will sell well...dont knock it until you have used it

I wish this was more of a rip off of the iPhone but unfortunately, it's not.

What makes the iPhone so cool is the Phone OS. The one Verizon uses is crap and based on the screenshots has not changed. It's just terrible.

I have the LG9900 right now and I am very happy with its functionality (which is superior to the iPhone IMO) but the phone OS is awful (terrible web browsing, terrible UI, terrible presentation).

If I was able to get plan phones this to me would be a great phone I would think on choosing. I don't really like AT&T and having a similar phone like the iPhone on Verizon network seems like a great idea to me.

Cut the crap of and go with other iPhone fanboys please. This is for people that need to use it in real life and don't like the AT&T network.

I don't know why anyone would want such a bulky phone like this, the iPhone, or one of those smart phones to be honest. About the only feature I see really worth while that I don't currently have is the "full web" browsing capabilities as oppose to the "mobile web."

I am currently using a Samsung SCH-u740 with my Verizon wireless and love it. Highly recommend this "razor" thin phone that is packed full of features.

you guys are dumb or what?
this is based off LG PRADA... and phone announced WAY before than the iphone
if there was a rip off it was apple.

its probably true apple as a company is pretty shady

how about you release an actual (non-outdated) smartphone now verizon? (ie the xv6800 that every other carrier has had for months)

Im sorry, but Verizon tried to hard. first of, its WAY to ugly, not even as good looking.. the weird color schemes? please. and im usually one going for the non apple crap, but Verizon needs to learn not to mess with the stock Themes/os that are MADe to come with the unlocked/stock version, verizon's UI is just UGLY.

Maybe both companies were working on touch screen but apple beat them by having the iphone out to the public first?
I just dont see how people can cry ripoff unless right after the iPhone Verizon's phone was planned, user interface design planned, hardware testing, software testing, bug fixing, ...bla bla bla ..., and final version in only a couple of months.

There's a lot of complaining about this phone, features, iPhone copying, etcetera. I've got a Voyager and like it, a lot!

  • First, I've seen the iPhone, we have an iPod Touch in the family, and this phone is not a copy, not similar. It's got a touch screen -- big deal, I've gotten used to touch interfaces with my laptops and using my Voyager's is similar. (it did take me a while to get used to laptop touchpads)
  • As was pointed out, LG came out with the Prada before Apple came out with the iPhone -- who is copying whom here? You can see the natural evolution from Prada to Voyager, the Prada has won design awards and I think my Voyager is pretty cool looking with it's dark metallic trim and black bezel.
  • I want a full keyboard! People who don't want one shouldn't buy this phone. Just because you don't want something doesn't mean it shouldn't be available for those who do.
