Via strikes deal over quad band memory

Chip firm VIA said it has licensed QBM (quad band memory) technology from Kentron.

The firm claimed that using QBM technology with its chipsets will effectively double the speed of double data rate (DDR) memories.

Via will use the technology to interface with high speed DDR 533 and DDR 667 memory modules, and will create chipsets that will also allow backward compatibility with existing DDR chips.

Kentron is providing design guides under the terms of the royalty licensing agreement, while other firms including ST Microelectronics and Acuid will help make chipsets to take advantage of QBM.
