Video of the ATIV S lands early, splays Windows Phone 8

We finally get a closer look at Samsung's ATIV S Windows Phone 8 device in this hands-on video posted to YouTube today.

The video originally uploaded by GSMArena and made private soon after, was re-uploaded by NewsTechChannel. The hands-on video gives another look at the device and some of the new features in Windows Phone 8, including the new home screen, wallet application and child safety features.

The ATIV S, announced back at Samsung's Unpacked event at IFA 2012, was the first announced smartphone to run Microsoft's Windows Phone 8 operating system. The device features a 4.8-inch HD Super AMOLED display, a 1.5GHz processor, 1GB of RAM, an 8-megapixel camera on the rear of the device, and a 1.9-megapixel camera on the front.

The device is 'coming soon' to the UK retailer Phones 4U, however, no specific dates have been announced; pre-orders for the device have also appeared on Expansys.

I literly hate the lock screen. What is the point of putting a Galaxy S III look alive lock screen image which is not a live wallpaper and the gesture of swiping the entire still image upwards to unlock the phone to reveal an operating system whose theme remotely matches with that of the lock screen or even the physical appearance of the phone.

'we expected a navigation app'..

You have Nokia Maps, but drive remains exclusive to Lumia although it can now use the same mapdata both off and online..

#switchtolumia is what I'd suggest..

I really think Samsung should have stuck with the Omnia line, both name and design-wise. They had some real good designs with the Omnia 7 and Omnia W/Focus Flash, and then this thing comes along- a phone that's a carbon copy of its android counterpart. This kind of design just doesn't look good with WP8, IMO. The edges need to be sharper, and while I like physical home buttons, I don't like the design of that one. Also, why not use aluminum in the design, rather than plastic?

I personally think this looks fugly just fugly. Design wise its crap and this is coming from a designer. If you want a WP8 phone that looks good go with Nokia or HTC.

I like it alot. This thing is really fast! Lumia 920 is too heavy and thick for me. I am going for this one.

Love the kids corner thing. Almost like having a secondary profile on the phone. Excellent for me to be able to hand my wee fella the phone to play Angry Birds and Sonic!

The photo at the top does resemble an iPhone, these were my thoughts exactly when I first opened the article but after watching the video, it really doesn't look like it much in real (3D) world....

When I first saw the wallpaper I thought I was looking at a Galaxy S III. A 4.8'' screen seems nice, although a bit big. The phone looks pretty good in general but I just think that home button is ugly.

If you think that home button is ugly , then you are gonna have a bad time . Seriously every new Windows laptop , tablet ,phone , software etc will have that symbol now

I don't like how the home button itself looks, as in that chrome bezel and whatnot. The logo I'm ok with.

Of course, almost all MFRs have done a good job of creating the simple and informative lock screen that WP7 introduced. (Actually ZuneHD introduced, but you get the point.)

I'd swear I was looking at a Galaxy. Maybe Samsung will be suing itself for copying itself.
