White iPhone 4 delayed further

And you thought Antennagate was the last hurrah in the epic saga that is Apple’s iPhone 4 release.

Early into the production of the iPhone 4, Apple announced that the white version of the wildly popular device would be delayed due to manufacturing issues. Apparently, getting the white on the phones to be perfectly consistent using the manufacturing technologies employed at the factories wasn’t delivering the standard of results that iPhone’s are expected to have. Some people in the know have tried to explain why white is so much harder to reproduce consistently than black, but Apple never divulged the exact reason for the delay. The second half of July (which is now) was the expected release date, according to the announcement.

In a statement this morning, Apple announced that the white iPhone 4 would be delayed even further, citing similar manufacturing problems. The vague announcement is disheartening to those who are waiting for the white iPhone 4.  While it could be a redesign of the antenna that is slowing the production of the white iPhone 4, Apple could also be delaying the phone to only release it when WP7 launches.

"...the more popular black model..."

Gee, I wonder why it's more popular. Maybe because it's the only one available.

if they redesign the antenna of the white iphone, then probably will do the same with the black one
but that doesn't seem to affect it...so could be other reason.

I have a white first gen. Nano. It has glass on it too and it's still as white as the day I purchased it. Also, I don't remember them having a problem manufacturing those.

First gen nanos were polycarbonate plastic, not glass.

If I remember rightly colour is difficult to do on any product, why do you think model T fords were all black as black was easier than doing colour or color for you spelling it wrong yanks.

In terms of painting cars black is probably the hardest colour to paint as it shows the imperfections much more than other colours.

colour is difficult my arse! Can see iphone 4 white being released and no longer having an antenna issue. They just need to figure out how to change the design without openly admiting they did something stupid.

Model T's where only back between 1915-1925 previous and after you could get other colours.

Yep, the old body shop saying goes - "If it ain't right, paint it white"

Do you even understand how much work goes into removing the black from an iPhone--even with the revolutionary technology pioneered by Apple?

or maybe they just holding it wrong so white wasn't really a pure white phone after all

It's getting retarded now. Seriously, it's not funny anymore..

Actually Razorfold... it's because they can't get the right shade of white printed on the silkscreen process.

hahaha! Wait... you really believe that?

You mean after 2 years of making a white iPhone they still haven't figured it out?

Sure that could be a reason, but its definitely not the only one. If the white iPhone 4g has the same antenna issues as the current black 4g, how do you think the media / people will take it? Apple can't just turn around and say buy a case again.

I'm not saying they aren't having issues with that, but I doubt that's the only reason. I wouldn't be surprised if they're not working on fixing the antenna issue at the same time.

Isn't it a different material that they're using for this phone verses the previous iPhone models? I'm not saying that it is or isn't the issue, however, it is possible and you can't compare it to the previous generations considering the different materials being used.

When you inspect batches on a datacolor machine that references it against a standard like most companies do, then yes I believe it and you should too. Moisture, heat, material composition, and surface differences all play on color application. You can test a piece of fabric at one temperature and at 15 degrees higher and the color will be slightly different.

Even companies like walmart enforce their products to go through a clearinghouse company of their choosing that guarantees consistent results. And depending on the product, color can be a requirement. If you can't get it right, they won't sell it.

There is no antenna redesign in the works for the current generation. If you want a new iphone that actually works without a condom on it, you'll need to wait a year or so for it and pay dearly.

And you know this? You an Apple employee who makes these kinds of decisions? I love when make definitive claims like this out their ass.

I just dont see why Jobs didnt say that during last weeks conference. So I am not convinced there will be a redesign.

In the Q&A session they said clearly that there was no hardware change planed. But it's apple, take that with a grain of salt.

Exactly. Apple also stated that the white iPhone would be available by the end of this month, but then again, look at the article these comments are attached too.

Um, they're still making black ones with the antenna issue, and if you buy an iPhone now they will say "here, have a free case if your moaning about the antenna".

I am 99% sure the white iPhone will have the same antenna weakspot.

Previous white iPhones had a white plastic back. The back (and front) of the iPhone 4 is made of glass, and has to be silkscreened.

Fixing the antenna definitely

It would be pretty stupid to release another product with the same design, when Apple knows it has a flaw (regardless of how minor people say it is)

You mean, they're keeping the design but addressing the antenna issues?

Ooops. I meant fixing the antenna design (coating it etc). Not the whole phone's design, I doubt that will change.

Exactly. This is surely why they are delaying it.

I will believe it when I see it. If this is the case, then why didn't Jobs mention something about it on the 16th? And if it is a redesign, existing iPhone 4 customers should get a FREE replacement.

No, it would be pretty stupid not to!
If the fixed the Antenna in the white phones, then everyone with the black phones will be asking for replacements.

Because then he`d be admitting there was a problem initially
