Wikipedia to join SOPA protest Wednesday

The SOPA Internet protest scheduled for Wednesday, January 18 just got a huge supporter. On his Twitter page, Wikipedia co-founder Jimmy Wales has announced that the hugely popular online encyclopedia will go dark for 24 hours on that date to protest the possible approval of the Stop Online Piracy Act. The shutdown will begin at midnight Eastern time and will only affect the English-based Wikipedia pages.

The news comes after the US House of Representatives have apparently decided not to vote on SOPA until there is a general consensus on the bill. However, even those actions will not stop Wikipedia from joining the SOPA protest. Wales said via Twitter, "We have no indication that SOPA is fully off the table. PIPA is still alive and kicking. We need to send Washington a BIG message."

Wikipedia is one of the world's biggest web sites in terms of visitors. According to the Twitter page of Comscore chairman Gian Fulgoni, the English version of the site gets 25 million daily visitors.

Wikipedia will join a large number of other web sites, including Reddit, Bungie.net, Minecraft.net and others, that will shut down for all or part of the day on Wednesday.

Could power conservation be added to the lists of benefits for them doing this?

I'm interested in who else may join in on this protest. Wikipedia is a big name at that.

I love and use Google and their products, but I have to say you're being a tad ridiculous. There are multiple alternatives to nearly all of the services you listed. The Internet would not crumble unto itself should Google cease for a day, or even a week. Google offers great services, some much better than others. But they are not the only ones who provide those services. The important ones mentioned above existed LONG before Google was around and wil continue to exist long after Google dies (if it ever does of course).

Internet Search...ohh wait...Yahoo, Microsoft etc etc.
Email...ohh wait...Yahoo, Microsoft etc etc.
Instant Messaging...ohh wait...Yahoo, Microsoft etc etc.
Social Networking...ohh wait...Facebook, LiveProfile, LinkedIn etc etc.
YouTube...ohh wait...Yay?

You get the point.

I have nothing but respect for the folks over there at Wikipedia. This is a huge deal to shut down the site for a full day.

Again SOPA is nothing compared to the NDAA which allows the corpo/gov to send military in to civilian homes to arrest without cause/warrant/trial and imprison for life or assassinate civilians in America (and of course all around the world) who go against the profits of the uber wealth/coporations and the (not our) government...

You troll again and with a different account. If you were a decent human being you wouldn't troll something so serious.

Except that he's right. The issue you talk about may be serious and worrying, but it's completely off topic and has nothing to do with technology.

What the hell are you talking about? Please be quiet. You OBVIOUSLY have me confused with somebody else.

Don't EVER make dumb assumptions about me.

Please learn what a troll is before starting to type next time. Are you truly so bothered by someone reminding you that this is no political/military/humanism news site covering such subjects? So bothered that you feel the need to insult them?

Good. May not matter but it will show these goverment nut cases that the people are not that powerless as they seem to think.
