Will a 'Major game' come free with Xbox One?

As the Xbox One edges slowly towards launch, and into a fierce battle with the PlayStation 4, Microsoft may be looking to give away a free 'major game' to boost sales, at least in Europe. The deal, which may eventually cover the US and other parts of the world, would be worth around £50 in the UK if sold separately, and form the christmas lineup for a major studio.

CVG's sources have revealed that the title will be a "unique Xbox One exclusive" and the announcement is being reserved for Gamescom, where executive Phil Spencer may make the reveal. Whatever the game is, it will certainly help to move consoles, if the rumor pans out.

Microsoft has made deals with a variety of publishers for exclusive game releases and even DLC, in the form of Battlefield 4 add-ons, in the past. The console is expected to be launched in November, however there have been delays in some European markets, meaning that it will only be available in 13 countries, instead of the originally planned 21 at launch.

We are now left to speculate on what the free game could be. Fifa 14 is a possibility, but so is Halo 5, which is also expected to be announced at Gamescom.

it'll prolly come with a game designed for kinect so ppl can see the kinect v2 in action and may spread the word at how good it is if they think its good and the extra £80 may seem trivial then.

They already announced that Killer Instinct would be free, correct?

Not quite. Its a full price retail, and an odd free demo of the entire game but only with Jago but you can buy the bits you want if you want more.

Certainly, looking at the MOBA market, I think there's good potential for fighters to follow (DOA and Tekken have already), but I'm not sure how viable it'll be for new, original games like a SFV or whatever. For older games, or ones already developed/paid for.

With digital distribution, they could easily give you a code.

That'd actually be hilarious, if only because of all the complaints they received about needing an internet connection.

SO NOT FAIR THAT THIS IS CURRENTLY UK ONLY!!!!! (hey, if everyone else can do it with US-only things, I can do it now, right? )

ps4 - £349
xbone - £429

The price difference is £80, around $125, that's a lot of cash, they aren't going to sell many consoles in uk unless they incentivise the xbone.

Best would be to announce 3-4 games that touch a few genres and you pick one out when you buy at a retail outlet. That'd be pretty sweet.

This is very interesting. I predict they will include a free game for the Christmas season, then drop the price of the system to $399 in April/May 2014 and remove the free game. I still think they should give everyone who buys the system a free year of Xbox Live Gold. First it will help increase the number of available players on the Xbox One (which will be small for first year) and second it will get a lot of people who have never used Gold to get used to the perks and possibly hooked on it.

I'm curious; it has to be a good game to get people interested, but no so good nobody buys anything else at launch. That would ruin things for retailers and publishers. I think they'd be better off including a voucher for a free game of your choice, although then you'd run into issues with supply and demand.

Holy $hit, GameStop will fill up all their space available with zumba used game

Not if they force you to do 30 minutes of Zumba to play other games. Or just have Zumba appear in the middle of another game. Everyone should do Zumba.

It is a Microsoft Studios game and has a lot of SmartGlass functionality too. Given the visuals you could argue that it is a showpiece game of the systems capabilities. I still think they would try to do something like a freemium game with it. Maybe charge for multiplayer add-ons, characters, upgrades, modes, in-game items.

How so? Every time I've picked up a console, even at launch its come with free games. Between 1 and 3.

That may have been a store deal. The Xbox and the 360 definitely didn't come bundled with any games.

Microsoft are really scrambling aren't they?

I think they are getting absolutely slaughtered in Europe (except UK) and the higher price/DRM fiasco/late launch means they will try anything to win back some customers. Anyone who thinks otherwise...... well, this is Neowin.

What I don't get is why it matters to any of you. Who cares why they are doing it? People love to attack these companies for their reasons behind a move, not the move itself. In MS' case, nearly every time they have good news, its countered with an attack based on MS' being reactionary or desperation.

Good news is good news and bundling a free game is good news. If your a person trying to pick out one console to get at launch, stuff like this matters. What matters a lot less is all of this arguing of intent or motivation.

I don't think they did at launch, but the 360 has had numerous bundles that included games and of course the first Kinect came bundled with a game.

No they were Manufacturer Incentives, they were printed on the Box etc, my N64 came with a free game, my PS2 came with 2 free games, my Original Xbox came with 2 free games, my 360 came with 2 free games. My friends PS3 came with a free game.

I can't remember further back if my PS1, Sega Megadrive came with any etc.

And they weren't purchased at launch. They were most likely purchased mid-way through the cycle, and you got 9 month old games like Skyrim or Forza.

I bought mine at launch at it came with Call of Duty 2 and Kameo, the box even said "2 free games included" and had the boxart from the games underneath it.

megadrive came with Sonic and later on a few other titles.

As far as I remember, I always bought a console with a bundle.

I think the only one i bought without a bundle was Vita, and I returned it as soon as I finished Uncharted, in a few days.

Games sell consoles, not specs. that is why vita is selling so bad.

Really? This is going to **** off a lot of my mates (myself included)
PS3 is strong in EU and these deals won't make people pick a XBO, they will just get annoyed with MS/DICE/EA....

Annoyed why? Because MS wants to be good to people who buy a XB1 and give them a free game? I think you picked the wrong word, annoyed isn't what you wanted, maybe bitter or jealous was what you really wanted to say?

As said, if its timed, I have said nothing
I am aware PS3 gotten timed exclusives (not just BF3) and so did 360. Besides I have a 920 and constantly have timed exclusives over other non-Lumia WP8 devices.
It would be something different if one game gets things the other doesn't. As in my opinion if you bring out games/software multi-platform, they should be the same (or very similar)

They'd only be annoyed if they live in one of the countries that will actually be getting the Xbox One.

I always thought they should reward Day One buyers with a free AAA launch title. Ryse would be nice, but Titanfall would be awesome!

I know it's not due until the spring, but they could give us a free voucher for it that would be redeemable at the title's release.

A voucher, for a game, after the holidays? Doubtful... "Here you go Johnny... enjoy the X1 that I gave you for Christmas... Game? Oh... You can play it in June."

Would be much smarter to announce FIFA for free included with the system in Europe.

I'd love for Ryse to be free with the system in USA though.

Wouldn't even put the disc in my console, or download Fifa if i got it free. You are right though a lot of people are nuts about Fifa in the UK anyway.

Yeah it would be pretty valuable if they put FIFA in for the UK. Not here in the US though. I'd rather have Ryse.

If we get Fifa the US gets Madden

Ryse would do mine fine, heck even Call of Duty. Just not Fifa lol.
