Windows 8 login screen evolution from builds 797x-816x

It's no secret that Microsoft is betting big on Windows 8. With a new design language being introduced called Metro and a host of other implementations, Windows 8 is turning out to be a great product. One thing that has been slowly tweaked in the leaked builds is the login screen and the evolution has been captured below.

WinUnleaked.Tk has been tracking the changes on the login screen and has put together a handy list of images that shows all the changes over the last few builds. You can see how Microsoft has been slowly tweaking the login screen over time and you can be sure that they will continue to do so right up until the final product is stamped and is sent off for mass production.

The Windows 8 login screen evolution is coming along nicely. With some time to go before the product launches, you can be assured that updates will continue to flow. Do you like how the process is coming along, want to see something different from Microsoft? Let us know in the comments below.

...and yet NONE are close to the actual shipping version.

Microsoft has been fairly closed about anything outside of the basic UI looks this time around, as they have tried to do in the past.

Vista didn't get glass until a few months before it shipped, Windows 7 UI features weren't turned on until late in the beta process, etc...

So to 'like' or 'not like' the leaks, is a bit of a waste of time.

(I remember people complaining about the 'basic' in Vista, having little clue what the actual Glass UI would look like, and even the 'basic' UI option changed.)

Honestly I don't see any real evolution here. It is just some icon changes and moving of controls here and there.

Isnt there meant to be a clock and other useful information displayable on the Win8 login screen..or are the lock and login screens fundamentally different?

Man I hope they keep the bill gates profile, please... best part is when it's not in photo format it is somewhat androgenous... hehe

Beside the login is there any real improvement for the OS itself? I grabbed a copy of the devs preview and I didnt fing useful most of features. Hope they come up with a better, cleaner, nicer UI/features

They are all very nice. I hope we can customize the logon background at the control panel.

I don't see why you wouldn't be able too. It's already here in W7.

I hope the Windows 7 like behavior to specify any background of your choice remains. I just don't like plain solid colors. In the current Developer Preview, you can set a picture before the login screen but the ugly plain green (or another color) always shows. Hope this will change and I can completely hide all traces of fugly plain solid colors.

The best looking one is at the top. Metro looks unfinished compared to it. It's as if they can't find a color to make it look good.

Did anyone notice that the latest has betta fish and has exactly 8 of them??? I see a beta in our near future!!

If you mean the top image, that's the oldest one, the one at the bottom is the latest.

What happened to the awesome login screen that had little numbered notifications in the bottom left? I can't remember where I saw a pic of it but damn it was awesome

I'm pretty sure that was the lock screen so that should still be around. The login screen will probably see more work done with it too.

Thank you for clarifying

Are these in order newest being on top ?

I also would like to know what's the chronological order... because if the last one is the newest then I'm afraid I will continue to hate this metro UI.

I'm torn. I love the background picture from the top image combined with the UI and layout of the bottom image. Would love to be invovled in the design/UAT on this, I could spend a *lot* of time pouring over such UI presentation details.

Agreed.
Kind of like a Metro/Zune cross-over.

I do wish they'd considered that as an option. The simplicity of the Metro elements with the stylistic flecks of the Zune backgrounds.

I still miss the Windows 2000 Login screen days. So simple, so clean.

And yet people complained about it as well, with all the extra 'color' and how gaudy it was, and not as clean and simple as NT 4.0...

I wonder if some of the users here were even around back then and remember that every time things change, people hate it, until they like it.

My prediction: People are going to find that Metro starts to look very boring, very quickly (assuming you don't already find it boring, that is).

people never complained about any other version of windows looking boring?
You can change the background of the desktop and the login screen and the color of the start screen.. Think of it that you could not change the picture of the start screen today and people don't mind

It looks like they just changed the background colour a whole lot. Is there some difference I'm not seeing in the latest login screens, like an animation?

the buttons have all changed the layout of the screen colours have changed picture box has changed size....

Looks nice. Initially I was a bit concerned about the changes being made for Windows 8. I'm not quite sold on it yet as being productive in an office environment, but I'll give it a chance. I'm definitely warming up to it.

where or how can I update my Build to the 816? I have Build 8102

You can't, there is no leaked build after 8102.

I hope they include a nice tutorial about hot to use the OS, something like in Windows95 because the new interface is a lot different

I'm sure they'll release tons of adverts, instructional videos, leaflets and all sorts by the time it's close to release. I mean they did similar with Windows 7, showing off the new Aero Features.
