Windows 8 Netflix app now available for download

A Windows 8 app for Netflix was promised several weeks ago and today, the company has now launched its newest client for its streaming movie and TV show service. The free app can now be downloaded via the Windows Store feature of Windows 8.

In a press release, Netflix says that the Windows 8 app was built especially to take advantage of the graphics acceleration features that can be found in Windows 8-based hardware. As you can see in the above screenshot, it also has a "Modern" user interface to merge seemlessly with Windows 8.

The launch of the Netflix app is just one sign that we are in for a flood of Windows 8-specific app releases in the next 14 days leading up to the launch of Windows 8 itself on October 26th. A few days ago, a third party web site said there were now over 4,000 Windows 8 apps available for download worldwide in the Windows Store.

The big question: What will the number be when Windows 8 goes into its general availability mode? Will we see the number hit as high as 10,000 apps? Stay tuned.

And yet there still isn't an app for the Mac App Store!

there's an iOS app....why would you need a seperate app for a Mac? Is it that hard to click a bookmark? That's what I do.

It's a great start, and I already like it better than the iOS app, which got dumbed down and had a lot of subcategories and features removed. It is nice to see some Win 8 apps coming out that are actually something I want to use. Most so far have been way too stripped down and lacking in features. This one will get better I'm sure.

Pretty simplistic, I see a lot of opportunity for a much better app, but It gets the job done. Get ready for a lot of 1.0's. hopefully with monthly updates and changelogs.

It lacks many features, but at least they've informed us that an update is coming this fall. The lack of Facebook integration might lead to me continuing to use the website until they include it in the app, if they ever do.

The design of the app is great, though! It reinforces how great "Metro" apps can look.

Netflix has Facebook integration...?

Yeah, it tells all your friends every time you watch something. Unless you tell it not to. It also gives you recommendations based on what your friends have been watching.

I agree with Calum though, this app is very well designed. I love how the side menu just slides up out of the way as you start to scroll through the content. A nice touch.

It might be allowed in countries other than the USA. I'm pretty sure it's against some privacy law here.

As far as I know, it's only included in the website. I haven't experienced the Facebook integration on Xbox or any other platform, unfortunately Also, I believe it's still not yet available in the US, but I could be wrong. I've been enjoying it in the UK, from the Netflix website, since the start of this year.
