Windows Live Essentials 2011 gets new update

Users of the software programs included in the Windows Live Essentials 2011 collection can now download and install a new edition of the bundle. The official Windows Experience blog reports that Microsoft has released a new update to the bundle, which includes minor updates to a number of programs, including Windows Live Messenger, Mail, Photo Gallery, Movie Maker, Family Safety, Writer, and Mesh.

While this is considered to be a minor update, Microsoft does say that that this download also contains "critical fixes for the Essentials package." As a result, previous owners of Windows Live Essentials 2011 will be required to download the update sometime in the next few months. If you don't want to download the package right away, Microsoft Update on both Windows Vista and Windows 7 will prompt you to download the package in a few weeks.

Microsoft does not give any specifics about what's new or changed in the new version of Windows Live Essentials 2011. However, it adds that people who have been running the older Windows Live Essentials 2009 package will see a number of new features in the 2011 edition, including "new social features in Windows Live Messenger, the ability to chat with Facebook friends, photo fuse in Photo Gallery, new themes in Movie Maker, and much more."

I should have waited for an updated a-patch before I ran the update... Now the ads are back which make wlm look like ****... I tried a-patch but it refuses to install on this version. Maybe it's possible to modify the version number in the registry to fool a-patch so it works???

Add rad.msn.com to your hosts file. I haven't seen an ad in Live Messenger in years.

"You can follow us on Twitter, add us to your circle on Google+ or like our Facebook page to keep yourself updated on all the latest from Microsoft, Google, Apple and the web."

Why the Google+ aint updated? last one is from Jan... Shame!

Have they dropped the update? Nothing available here, the installer just lat me install new apps that I have not and says I already have the others...

It should have updated any installed apps and given you the option to install apps that you don't have (custom install). For me, it said that any installed apps will be updated.

I know, but here it just give me the selection for not intalled apps, and if I untick them, it deactivates the install button. Hence, there is not update available here for now...

That's odd. I downloaded "wlsetup-web.exe" from here: http://explore.live.com/windows-live-essentials

Maybe the update isn't available yet in your region. I live in Canada and we usually get updates from the US at about the same time. I don't think the same applies to Europe.

Wish MS would make this install faster.

It's slow because you have to download the downloader and then download the install files which intern installs the downloaded files....

I was talking about the offline installer.

Has anyone else had this problem? When I installed the update and tried to run WL Photo Gallery I got an error message saying it couldn't start.

I wish they keep on improving Windows Live Writer.. it's the only best blogging application I can find. It's great, but new features or updates don't hurt

Does WLE 2011 work in Windows8 desktop?

Yup, I just get annoyed getting 2 alerts for each message, and everytime I sign out of Win8 Messenger, it signs me back in...

The only way I found was to uninstall messenger metro. It will prompt that this also uninstall 3 others program.

But you cant change or even have a nickname - you're forced to give MS your name and second name. Renaming contacts to give nickname without option for choose own one? Sorry, it's not a real function - just "phantom limb".

they used to release new version a bit ahead of the year it's titled. where the hell is WLE 2012? could they be working on Messenger + Skype merge? if so, I hope they don't combine the worst parts of both sides.. for example, in my experience audio/video call quality in Messenger is much better than in Skype.

IDK, but I hope there is one in development. The metro apps in Win8 don't even come close to touching the functionality of this software. Live Gallery is one piece I'll never let go of.

They're only preview apps that aren't yet feature complete.

Yes, but I don't see the photo app in Win8 coming close to Live Gallery. Just the way the folders are displayed irks me. I like to have the layout Gallery gives us.

True, but hopefully Microsoft will have desktop versions as well.
