Windows Live Essentials 2011 released

Microsoft has released the final version of Windows Live Essentials 2011.

As Neowin exclusively revealed earlier today, the software giant has released the final edition to the web.

The complete package comes just over a month after a beta refresh was issued on August 17. Microsoft originally released a Windows Live Essentials beta on June 24. Essentials includes the popular programs Windows Live Movie Maker, Mail, Messenger, Writer, Sync, and Family Safety. The Windows Live team has aimed to ensure that the next version of Windows Live Essentials takes advantage of Windows 7 fully. All applications now use the new ribbon UI and integrate further into Windows 7 by using Jumplists. Windows Live Sync is also included which keeps your files synchronized on the web and across multiple PCs.

Microsoft also introduced several new features for Windows Live Photo Gallery, including photo fusing to blend photos together and improved facial recognition.

serious message list security flaw wasn't fixed - the message loads on right clicking it. there is no way to delete potentially dangerous email without opening it.

Did I miss something or does anyone know why MS decided that they should remove minimize to tray from WLM? This is just ridiculous. I remember the only way to get the option back was to install through a compatibility mode, is it still the same deal here?

Not that I use WLMessenger these days to really care, but reading the comments about all of the things that have been added makes me think back to the good old days of MSN Messenger 4/5/6 and the various things that mess.be used to provide. Yep, the good old days are definitely gone.

My problem is when usefull and important features are removed for no good reason. The idea is to increase utility and control not reduce it. Why has Microsoft removed features under 'Privacy'? Specifically I am referrign to the lpage where one could view the list of blocked contacts and also the one's who are allowed to contact you. Even more importantly where is the page where you could see the list of people who have you added to their contact list? I am presuming these have been removed for I certainly cannot find them.

Anyone know if the install switches from the previous version are also the same for this one, or are they any different?

I use a .cmd file on customers' machines that installs with "/AppSelect:ALL,!FamilySafety /noToolbarCEIP /noHomepage /noLaunch /noMU /noSearch" switches

Why did they F up Live Sync? Please just take what made Mesh great and add it into Sync (i.e. the ability to log in to a folder structure like Mesh did to access your files?. What if I'm at a Public Computer and need access to a Word document?????

The new Windows Live Mail client is awesome. It's nice that it finally fits in with Windows 7.

I agree, now it has so many awesome features that there's no need for Outlook anymore

I told the installer to custom install Messenger, Mesh and Mail but the first time it installed Mesh, Mail, Photo Gallery and Movie Maker and didn't bother installing messenger. I had to run the installer a second time to install messenger. weird!

Now I have to remove photo gallery and movie maker which I didn't even want!!

Since i installed the new messenger, i can't see other's webcams and my webcam doesn't work to the other only! But if i go to webcam and audio settings i can see my webcam but i can not activate it to see me the other side.

Driver problem? Incompatibility problem? (My webcam is in-build to asus vk246h lcd)

This was a change they did, no more One-Way Webcam! They did this to push better quality and resources towards just Video Chat which opens it up on both ends.

Nicknames get annoying, and you CAN Talk to FB people from LIVE, That's what the feature is!

Still the same things I didn't like from the Beta, you have to be online to send an offline message to anyone, and if you chose to appear online just to that person, once you want to appear online to everyone it will unblock all previously blocked people...So far its the only thing that bugs me, that means that 99% of the rest of the whole essential suite rocks for me

Is there a way of not automaticly updating Live Mail with when updating other parts as I dislike it enough to not update anything to avoid Mail.

I don't get why they still put adverts in the Messenger? isn't there like free IM clients which don't have adverts and microsoft surely has more money than the creators of those free clients...

It's free and if you don't like ads, yes, there are other apps.

That said ... they run servers for this, they develop the app ... they are a business, and their business model is to make money. Doesn't that make sense? The people who make those other apps are often just single or a couple of people doing it for a bit of fun. And believe me, they make money too

Some of the clients ask for donations. They use the ads to fund R&D most likely.

All things being consistent then how do you explain the Mac client not having ads and yet made by Microsoft.

The Mac client is designed to be part of the Office Communicator suite.

Photogallery kicks ass man. ONce you get used to it. I used it all day yesterday for a project it was awesome. No bugs I can find in this release yet. I was SO angry about Movie Maker not having a timeline that I dissed it for a long time. But It actually is really easy to use, aside from the really buggy choppy video scrubber.

I can't stand the new Messenger. Uninstall time. Back to wave 3. Hopefully they won't force us to update.

You can always use aMSN instead.

Yes they finally fixed the skydrive synced storage server problems where you couldnt view a folder if it had lots of files in it.
the change back to 5gb is also nice too.
not much else seems to have changed.

Way too much wasted white space in a WLM message window. There's no reason for messages to be spaced out so much.

Just installed it. Worked smoothly. However, what happened to the ">" in front of quoted text in plaintext e-mails? Hitting reply doesn't add anything, and I can't find an option for it. Has this been removed altogether? Or is it a bug?

For those complaining about the "Nick Names" It's not like MS Dictates a real name or not. All you do is change it to whatever you want on the live profile page and it will work.

Mine is currently set to: Dave Awesome (Dave being set as first name, then I just set the lastname as Awesome) who is MS to tell you if a name is legit or not.

What gets my goat is the 2 name mandate. Everyone knows me by one name. I never use my real name in real life or on-line. I need to be able to use my one used name. As it is I have to repeat myself - i.e. Tucker Tucker - it's annoying. I suppose I could use Fat Tucker!

No one seems to be talking about the new features in Photo Gallery. I plan on upgrading my in-laws simply for the photo wizards. no more 100+ family pics for me

The ActiveX component allows you to be automatically logged into the services when you load your web browser - so you don't need to log in multiple times. Login once and get access to everything.

What's nicer than the old one? The old one never showed a splash screen when you had it set to load on system startup.

The splash screen is nice, the 2009 version just shows the spinning MSN logo people. I prefer it showing what's happening.

I'm glad they are making advances in terms of look-and-feel, but the IMAP support still "feels" as bad as it was with Outlook Express...

jimmyfal, thanks for your input. Any impressions on Photo Gallery yet? I've played with the beta refresh version and found start time and overall responsiveness quite frustrating, even after face detection has finished its job.

Quite good, but can be slow loading photos/videos.

Glad to see it's released after several months of being in beta, but it is a shame about the changes that makes WLM less usable for the most.

It's NOT ready yet... What is the matter with you MS? I thought this business of releasing betas as final product was over! My first impression was of Movie Maker unable to smoothly scroll through a clip with the scrubber line, and choppy playback on the video. Pretty bush league man. Ok, I'm moving over to Photo Gallery now.... I'm on a quad core machine with 8 gigs, a fresh install and no other programs running.

You got a decent video card in there? Editing HD video can be tough.

haha weird. I actually just installed the final Essentials, and HD video works perfectly on my relatively underpowered HP Touchsmart TM2!

Movie Maker has to render the preview before it will smoothly let you view it, you should see a progress bar in the lower left after you drag a clip in. It rendered the transitions instantly which is really rare. I finally like the software haha, it's awesome.

Custom install won't let you NOT install the "bing bar".
It says it is going to "upgrade" these programs including "bing bar".
(I tried bing bar once previously and uninstalled it. So it does not "fully" get uninstalled after you use the "official" uninstall method using control panel.)
Now I had to uninstall "bing bar" after installation.... again... and delete the (very buggy firefox extension) "seach extension" folder in the search enhancement installation which comes with a "bing bar" install. (I don't use windows search / don't need search enhancing, I have SSD!!!)

Small correction. For this final release, they went with Live Mesh name instead of Live Sync. I'm primarily using this to keep my IE Favorites and a few working documents in sync.

Not as bad as 2009, if you had the main contact list open. You had two windows appear Now at least it leaves the contact list open as the window. And this is likely there, for the jumplists and the aero peek status buttons.

Trusting the people who said nicknames are NOT back, this is now officially the worst version ever. FB bloated crap and no nicknames...

I liked the 2009 (?) version, I would love to try the new WL Mail 2011. I'm quite sure, if they are aware that nicknames are gone, none of my friends are going to upgrade *voluntarily*.

It's been a good 10 years, but this will be the demise of MSN/WLM. Especially using "real names" without asking, I won't be surprised if there's major protest about that in a few days. Can you at least change your "real name" from within WLM now, or do you still need to find some obscure webpage?

Nicknames did get annoying, as if you did not have Messenger Plus for my contacts, most of them are just a random jumble of characters that colour it. And mostly you have to hover over the contact to see the email to know who it is, this is better. And the facebook is awesome, expeccialy FB chat.

You know, a lot of people don't care about the real name of their online friends. If I met someone in a forum and add them to my contacts, I expect to see their nickname, not their actual name I don't even know.

Same here, and you could always set the real name. While it is rather disturbing the other way around, in my humble opinion.

I also suggested a compromise: the option to have a contact list with either real names, nicknames or both. My biggest concern is that MS just assumes you want *everyone* to see your real, full name; while you might want to keep that hidden for a while for all sorts of people you just meet online.

All you people concerned about your nickname and what not, simply go to your msn profile page and change your name on settings. Obviously the name is coming from somewhere... duh.

Rodrigo said,

I know - hence the "why do we need to go to an obscure web page" comment. As you can see, I'm one of those folks really attached to nicknames and not too happy about the removal and about the fact MS does not properly warn people that their full name is displayed.

Rodrigo said,

Yes, but that changes your actual name as it appears for other people - you can't have both a nickname and an actual name. That's ridiculous.

We're not talking about nicknames with 40 stupid characters - simply nicknames.
Sometimes you either don't want to display your real name, or don't care about the other people's names. If you meet someone on a forum / online game / whatever, you know them by their nickname, not their actual name. And often you don't care about their actual name.

Well most people who want to use it will/should be using Vista/7 by now. Being out for 5 years/1 year. Pretty sure most of people I know who would use it are at least on Vista, with a few on 7. Heck, I'm sure Office 2014 and other software won't work on XP. 7 is the way to go, I mean 7 is not even that pricy anyway!

But Windows Vista still got it going and is updated to support stuff like directwrite and direct2d and the other directx features and releases still and will for a long time.

By this time next year "most computers" will be on 7.

XP's market share is on the decline, and should be about 40-30% by years end.

Let's say that Messenger is stuck in 2005, and only experiences 100 million unique logons per month. That's 30-40 million of their customers denied.

NT5.1 won't even install with less than 64 megs, really needs 128 megs to survive, and starts to shine at 256 megs. NT6.x doesn't even get out of bed for 512 megs, so you have a lot of older systems that either can't install it, or it would drag their perf to near zero.

I have a couple of older apps that crash&burn on 7, so my machine is a dual-boot. Best of both worlds, but my kind is in the minority.

When posting obvious absurdity, it's considered polite to use an emoticon. Everybody knows NT=Windows...after all, it's the only desktop OS that MS develops now, and we don't want to confuse the n00bs.

Oh come on!! WLE 2011 not available for WinXP! How lame..

What is it with people who want to run a 9-yo operating system but expect it to run the latest software?

Offline installer will be soon... The page is up! Just google Windows Live Essentials and you get the final build of

15.4.3502.922

The page says:
"Er komt een nieuwe versie van Essentials aan! Meer informatie over de bèta."
"New version of Essentials on its way! More information about the beta."
This is really the final version?

Think it's only the English version as of now - the German version is not available as final too...

EDIT: I tried the offline installer -> works in German...

The Dutch version is still the beta (and the pages are not updated yet).
